I am proudly a One Percenter

Mar 28, 2022, 9:56 AM

In Europe, 80% of cars sold have manual transmissions. In the U.S., it’s only 1%.

I've only owned 1 vehicle in my life (out of roughly a dozen in my life) that wasn't a manual transmission. It's what I grew up driving (farm trucks and "three on the tree" pickups), and it's stuck with me. Automatics are downright boring to me.

I guess this is the one "Euro" thing that Bougie America doesn't find trendy and cool.

Same here.

Mar 28, 2022, 10:00 AM

My Mazda CX-5 and Mrs. Tig's Honda are both manuals. The truck is auto, so I guess I'm more of 1.5%er, really.

I'll say this.

Mar 28, 2022, 10:09 AM

None of my car selections were based on transmissions. I drive an Infinity with a five speed now. A 70 yr/o man doesn't look for that but it's what I have and it is a good car which will outlast me.

Mar 28, 2022, 11:04 AM

I have a 1985 MB 300SD which will outlast that infinity and every automobile produced this year if treated well. There's no bailing wire or duct tape on anything I drive.

I was looking for one back in 2013 just as a cheap car and they said unless I wanted an v-tech or whatever their sports car model of it was called, it's next to impossible to find one, unless you order it. Which I guess would be normal in today's market.

Drove manuals for the first 12-13 of my driving years,

Mar 28, 2022, 10:31 AM

but honestly can't think of the last time I drove one. Naturally, I'd excel at it like I do with anything else involving hand-eye coordination, but I'm glad I don't own one now, because shifting would really interfere with reading/scrolling on my phone and managing my beverage of choice. It's like automatics took over around the same time smart phones were invented...almost like it was by design.

Eventually we'll be able to automate the steering, acceleration, and braking, too, and everyone will be a passenger. If that appeals to people, I won't get mad about it. It does not appeal to me, other than from a safety perspective.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I start in one place.

Mar 28, 2022, 11:48 AM

Then, after as little time as possible, I am in a place I want to be. That's really what it's all about.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

it's like a lot of other things really.....

Mar 28, 2022, 11:57 AM [ in reply to Why people would want to do this ]

why do people hunt and fish when meat is in the store already cleaned and packaged?
why do people play sports when they could just play a video game of it?
why do people shop, prepare, and cook their own meals when there are restaurants?
why do people do woodworking when they could just go buy the same thing already made?
why do people grill out when they could just get something delivered?
why do people go on vacation when they can just look at pictures and videos of the vacation area?

It's called enjoyment of an activity. The excitement of physical interaction.

Driving a manual isn't really that much harder than an automatic, it's just different. And a hundred times more pleasurable to some of us. If you don't get it, you don't get it, and that's just fine with us. Demeaning it accomplishes nothing. But that's how the world is nowadays - ridicule that which you don't understand.

declared she wanted a honda hrv when her car recently gave it up, and there are no more manual trans for that. She wanted it anyway, so I don't know where the line was for her, but the hrv was over it.

My Jeep is going to the grandkids (raising them right), so I have ordered a Bronco to replace it, and the rumor is that after the '22 model they will have no manuals either. As it is now, only the base models have manuals, so that's what I got. Allegedly. I'll believe it when I see it.

First car was a '73 Superbeetle, manual tranny obviously,

Mar 28, 2022, 11:13 AM

and it was fun to learn as a 16 year old. You know how much roadhead I got in that car? ZERO. You know how many handys I got in that car? Zero. I blame that on the stick shift in the middle.

Now that I drive a manual with a bench seat in the front, those statistics are still zero but I blame that on my wife and not the car.

days ago that I might start looking for an old truck, and I wanted a manual transmission. It's been a while since I had one. Caught the bug again a couple weeks ago when a friend picked up a 2008 Ford Ranger 5-speed. I drove it and realized... man, I miss the feeling of shifting gears...
