I do. Maybe for different reasons. I don't believe there has been a team left out of the playoffs that realistically had a chance to win. I maybe wrong, but it seems to work with the top 4.

I do agree that 15 games is enough for college players.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

USC?

Real or not real

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

There is ONLY ONE USC...

Jan 14, 2022, 12:14 PM

and it sure as he!! ain't in Columbia, South Carolina.

Notre Dame? LMAO! They would never join the SEC.

They would never be associated with those rednecks.

I do

Jan 14, 2022, 12:15 PM

Can you name a year when more than 4 teams deserved a title?

And if you want to take ND and USC and have your own, go right ahead. We won’t miss you.

I am not opposed to expanding the CFP...

Jan 14, 2022, 12:17 PM

provided it is structured in such a way so as to insure that the field isn't dominated by a single conference. Let's face it, the only reason the $EC is in favor of expanding the CFP to 8 or 12 teams is because they think they will be able to get between 4 and 8 teams in each year which is total bull$#!7.

Re: Do you agree with your commissioner on playoff expansion?

Jan 14, 2022, 12:19 PM

Yes. They have a problem each season finding four teams to fill the spots. The NIL and Transfer Portal issues need to be addressed before they open the Pandora’s Box of expansion.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I have not heard anyone from Clemson pushing for

Jan 14, 2022, 12:19 PM

Notre Dame, and USC (Univ. of Southern California) to be part of CFP expansion.

Notre Dame plays five games with the ACC each year, but are not full time members. USC is not part of the ACC.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I tend to like the idea of expansion

Jan 14, 2022, 12:22 PM

For the basic reason that it is the only way to allow a path for all teams in the FBS to actually get to the playoff should they go undefeated.

With that said, I do think the current wild west of NIL and transfer portal are much bigger concerns that need to be reviewed and addressed first.

I agree with tiger thom on the NIL and portal issues.

Re: Do you agree with your commissioner on playoff expansion?

Jan 14, 2022, 12:24 PM

I do. Why have more blow out games leading up to the final. For the most part, the semi’s are always lopsided games. Just think if you add more less deserving teams.

I would be all for making consolidating the power 5 to 4 super conferences. Have the conference championship games the first round, the semi’s, then the finals. That is what makes most sense to me.

Yes. Honor the current contract and then make changes. It's amazing to me that nothing is honored anymore. I hate the direction that society is headed. No one wants any rules, contracts, obligations, or consequences.

I do. Who outside the top 4 had a realistic chance of winning it all? The Irish? They can't win a major bowl. Bucknuts? They got taken to the woodshed by meechigan. Baylor? Could make an argument there but I think they would of been a better opponent than Cincinnati. 4 is a good number. We don't need anymore SEC force feeding. Just look at the dismal tv ratings for that championship game. 2nd lowest ever.

Yep. The SEC can split off and have their NFL-lite league. The rest of us will have student athletes competing for the college national championship. Works for me.

Football season is less than a week in the books and these two are fully entrenched in the stirring of the pot that comes from off-season boredom.

Maybe they got a head start because of how boring the playoff was this season.

I don't understand the cries for expansion at this point.

There were only 3 playoff games this season and ratings show that people didn't even stay engaged until the end.

Now people are clamoring for a playoff with either 7, 11 or 15 total games?

Re: Do you agree with your commissioner on playoff expansion?

Jan 14, 2022, 1:44 PM

I disagree. I think the playoff should be shrunk to the top two teams only; one vs two for all the marbles. The only time four teams makes sense is if there are more than two undefeated teams, which is extremely rare. If you ain't undefeated, then you didn't do everything you should have to earn your way into the championship game and you're at the mercy of the rankings.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He's not my commissioner...I am a fan, not a player or coach

Jan 14, 2022, 1:44 PM

I wish it would stay at 4, but have accepted that expansion is all but inevitable

And good luck trying to get Notre Dame to join the SEC...LOL

Re: Do you agree with your commissioner on playoff expansion?

Jan 14, 2022, 2:01 PM

Hardly seems to matter. Between NIL, portal, and expansion, not to mention political/social issues, college football specifically and college athletics will be unrecognizable--and not in a good way--pretty soon anyway.

The proposal calls for the bracket each year to include the six highest-ranked conference champions, plus the six highest-ranked other teams as determined by the College Football Playoff selection committee. No conference would qualify automatically and there would be no limit on the number of participants from a conference.

The four highest-ranked conference champions would be seeded one through four and each would receive a first-round bye, while teams seeded five through 12 would play each other in the first round on the home field of the higher-ranked team. (The team ranked #5 would host #12; team #6 would meet team #11; team #7 would play team #10; and team #8 would meet #9.) Under the proposal, the quarterfinals and semifinals would be played in bowl games. The championship game would continue to be at a neutral site, as under the current format.

I guess they needed to make sure more SEC teams make the playoffs....without the conference chaps are seeded 1-4 rules, this would probably look like

1 seed: SEC champ
2 seed: SEC champ game loser
3 seed: SEC team in second place in SEC west
4 seed: SEC team in second place in SEC east
5 seed: Notre Dame (just because)
6 seed: best 3-loss SEC team
7 seed: B1G champ
8 seed: Big 12 champ
9 seed: ACC champ
10 seed: next best SEC team
11 seed: best Go5 team
12 seed: PAC-12 Champ

If they keep that rule, shuffle a bit:

1 seed: SEC champ
2 seed: B1G champ
3 seed: Big 12 champ
4 seed: ACC champ
5 seed: SEC champ game loser
6 seed: SEC team in second place in SEC west
7 seed: SEC team in second place in SEC east
8 seed: Notre Dame (just because)
9 seed: best 3-loss SEC team
10 seed: next best SEC team
11 seed: best Go5 team
12 seed: PAC-12 Champ

What this proposal ignores is that the conference championships already act as round 1, mostly. In 2020 we already saw Alabama-Florida and Clemson-Notre Dame and Oklahoma-Iowa State in those conference championship games. But this format would give them yet another bite at the apple. Plus it would let teams that could not even win their conference DIVISION (let alone the conference championship) into the playoff (A&M was 2nd in SEC West, UGA was 2nd in the East)?

For exciting every upset (say Cinci over UGA in 2020 example below) that peopel will point to every 5 years to say "See, they deserved to be there! That's why we need 16 teams in the playoffs!" there will be boring lopsided games that had no business being played in the first place, which will end up just setting up rematches (possibly 3rd games, e.g. if ND had been ranked 7th and both Clemson and ND won their games, that would have been a 3rd game).

Killing the golden goose is what they're doing.

2020 would have look like: (Actual 2020 rank in () )
1) Bama (SEC champ) (1) - Bye
2) Clemson (ACC champ) (2) - Bye
3) Ohio State (B1G champ) (3) - Bye
4) Oklahoma (Big 12 champ) (6) - Bye
5) Notre Dame (4) - R1 Host
6) Texas A&M (5) - R1 Host
7) Florida (7) - R1 Host
8) Cinci (AAC champ) (8) - R1 Host
9) Georgia (9)
10) Iowa State (10)
11) Indiana (11)
12) Coastal Carolina (Sunbelt champ) (12)

USC (the real one) is left out as Pac 12 champ (ranked 17) by virtue of AAC and Sunbelt champs being ranked higher). Four SEC teams, 3 B1G, plus ND...would/will ALWAYS be that.

Re: Do you agree with your commissioner on playoff expansion?

Jan 14, 2022, 2:09 PM

4 teams is plenty but since only money and what the SECheat wants seems to matter anymore, I’m sure it’ll eventually be a 24 team playoff that includes the entire SEC + the other conference Champions and whoever the SEC is courting for future membership

Re: Do you agree with your commissioner on playoff expansion?

I do agree because I believe that he is using the only leverage that he has to fix things like the portal and NIL. College football needs to be restructured or the current chaos will kill it. Let’s do that and then expand with a new TV contract.

It needs to be expanded and it will be. It's a lock. Might as well do it sooner than later. The TV ratings sucked for this playoff. It's becoming like NASCAR for people from Los Angeles. It's just a regional thing.

Jan 14, 2022, 4:53 PM

Congrats on your national title. It was well deserved. Theres nothing like that feeling. To answer your question, I want the playoff expanded to 8 or 12, probably more in favor of 12. So I guess I disagree with him. I think he knows it is inevitable that it will expand. What the ACC has to do is make sure that the conference is ok with who gets automatic bids and how the at large entries are determined. I think that's the game he's playing.
And Notre Dame should have to join a conference. I'm glad we beat the living hell out of them when they thought they were going to use the league for one year, get a title and get out. The 34-10 whipping in the ACCCG was a lot like the Cotton Bowl beatdown of 30-3.
