Pleased with the progress of the Baseball team

Apr 4, 2016, 2:09 PM

We have a decent record and are winning at rate that we are currently ranked in the Top #15 of the college baseball polls. Monte Lee is a breath of fresh air, IMO and for the life of me I can't understand the few that are complaining about it unless they are hard core Jack Leggett fans who can't let go.
Congrats to Coach Lee and the whole squad for their hard work...It is paying off and the sane out here notice and appreciate it!

Who's complaining?

Apr 4, 2016, 2:22 PM

I haven't seen any complaints. I've heard one or two people say that this year's team was going to be good no matter who the coach was, but I haven't seen/heard a single complaint about this team.

Not complaining, but this team worries me. Unless he puts Krall in the weekend rotation and takes Charlie out, I can't see us winning any of the acc series vs Louisville, ncstate, g tech or fsu even though the last 3 are at home

We'll give up some runs to those teams

Apr 4, 2016, 5:01 PM

just have to outscore them and not help them out with errors.

That's just it. We can't play defense. Our worst defenders in the infield are SS and 2B, which are supposed to be strong. RF we struggle. LF sometimes. Okey can't throw ANYBODY out. Errors don't just stop. Either you can field and throw a ball or you can't. The only way we beat good teams in a series is if they make errors along with us and walk a lot of our batters. I don't think we're gonna get another weekend of great pitching like we did against scar.

Have you ever played any competitive baseball? One thing you learn in playing baseball and in being coached is that the sun don't shine on the same dog's behind every day. A baseball team is not going to win every game during a season, but if a player and a team is willing to work at the game fundamentals over the course of a game or a season, they have a chance until they don't.

I can't remember all of the baseball players that I thought weren't much at the beginning of a season, but ended up making team contributions later in the season.

* A base runner might not get faster, but he might gain more quickness by learning technique with his lead, jump and slide.

* An infielder might not be the slickest at the beginning of a season, but with coaching and repetition he may gain enough confidence to be more than adequate to hold his own.

* An outfielder may not be the best at covering ground, but with experience and learning from mistakes, may learn how to position himself for certain batters - particularly if he's smart enough to read the catcher's signals.

* A pitcher learns his strengths and weaknesses - and his catcher and fielders - over the course of a season - particularly in certain situations.

* A batter can learn to be more patient - or more aggressive - in certain situations.

All of it depends on the willingness to learn and be a team player - and coaching is at the heart of it. Give them a chance.

Wilson is up from .850 last year to .971 this year

Eli isn't fielding super well, down at .909 but he's been OK, and the revolving door at 3rd has made a good many errors but Jordan Greene looks promising.

Assuming the current roster stays the same, 11 of our 41 errors this season were made by players who are not starters (6 by Renwick .887 FLD%, 3 by Bryant .857 FLD%, 2 by Batson .750 FLD%). Based on that information I would expect our team FLD% to go up over the 2nd half of the season. We won't be an elite fielding team, but we should be respectable.
