Will anything be done to prevent goal post injuries in the future?

Sep 6, 2015, 7:32 PM

Talked with a former player during the game and he remarked at how dangerous the location of the goal posts are. Would've been nice if a few million $, for example a fraction of the West End Zon budget, could've been used for field safety improvements. I certainly believe there are innovations that could protect players from collision injuries with goal posts better than just wrapping a pad around them.

Anyway, here's to wishing Mike Williams a quick and healthy recovery.

Our retractable goalposts actually could be a problem

Sep 6, 2015, 7:38 PM

because the base is so much bigger than the standard fixed posts.

Clemson got the retractable posts to prevent injury that comes along with crowds tearing down the posts.

Just kinda' ironic.

I've always been surprised they are allowed to be so close to the field. Would think something like 10-ft would be much better...might make a good engineering project for someone...just saying.

IDK, you could throw a flag and an ejection for shoving a guy into it.

I thought the defender made a clean play

Sep 6, 2015, 8:07 PM

Appeared to me he was just trying to break up the reception in the back of the endzone.

Re: I thought the defender made a clean play

Sep 6, 2015, 8:12 PM

he was trying to keep him from getting a foot in bounds, and pushed him into the upright in the process.

badge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I can't say on that particular play.

Sep 6, 2015, 8:09 PM [ in reply to Re: Will anything be done to prevent goal post injuries in the future? ]

It's a perfect angle for shoving someone into the post but since he's trailing Mike it's also the only way he could shove him out the back of the end zone. I'd hate to impeach the kid over something that looks like it might just be incidental. I don't blame him for the push or the angle or the force of his hands. He almost got Mike out of bounds, split second late.

I agree, but I see no other way to keep kids form hitting the upright, cause williams own momentum would not have caused the injury.

Totally agree... He was out of bounds when he got pushed

for gods sake it was a freak accident. name the last person that has been hurt running into the goal post. freak stuff happens in football. it is a big boy game.

Hans device seems to be in order. NCAA officials in cooperation with NASCAR officials will be conducting a 2 year study, testing a new safer barrier throughout all areas of the field boundaries. ??

Remove them - Use lasers lights and computers for analysis.

Sep 6, 2015, 8:20 PM

My guess is the technology is feasible.

Let's get Clemson's physics, engineering and computer science departments working on it.

Might have to add GPS chips to footballs used for FG/XP's

BTW I am serious.

Love the idea. Might be ahead of its time though. They just realized playoffs were in order. Gotta ease them into it they're brains might explode.

Holigraphic goalposts. Turn it on only when needed.

Clemson makes enough money for goalposts to be torn down

Sep 6, 2015, 8:24 PM

the few times that calls for it. Put old ones back up.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It was not about the money, the new retractable goal posts

Sep 6, 2015, 8:33 PM

were installed to prevent fans from being injured when they tore the goal posts down. Ironic that safety was the reason the goal posts were installed, but their large base may make them more likely to cause player injuries.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And just how often is an injury caused by a goalpost?.....

Sep 6, 2015, 8:29 PM

One in a million plays? I'm 60 years old and can't remember the last time someone was injured by a goalpost.

There used to be injuries when the goalposts were on the actual goal line way back when - that why they were moved to the back of the endzone. Also, they used to be two posts in the ground then they went to the single post we've been using for the past few decades now.

The was a freak accident - nothing more.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

you think they are in the way?

Sep 6, 2015, 8:55 PM

no, not anymore....

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I always worry about those brick sideline walls, especially

Sep 6, 2015, 9:20 PM

in the corners. Never made much sense to me other than it looks nice. I recall a player hit the wall near the visitor locker room entrance a couple of years back during the FSU game. The AD put up temporary padding, but have not seen it since. Seems like a safety issue to me.

Re: I always worry about those brick sideline walls, especially

Sep 6, 2015, 9:28 PM

Agree, those bricks were put there when the average player was a lot smaller and slower. There are two or three times a season when I hold my breath.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

those are pads, disguised as bricks.....

Sep 6, 2015, 9:29 PM [ in reply to I always worry about those brick sideline walls, especially ]

.....obviously pretty well disguised. All around the end zones.

I wish they would flip every other one upside down, they all are identical and irk me everytime they catch my eye :) (Most people don't realize they are pads, good job!)

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think they should just stop playing. Too many hazards.***
