Never been to any in Spartanburg, but I remember going to Catawba when I was young and then Carlisle when I was maybe middle school or so. It’s hard to remember back that far now, but I did love it. Good times.

Catawba Fish camp in between Lancaster and Richburg?

Feb 23, 2020, 2:20 PM

They still do a heck of a business

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yessir.

Feb 23, 2020, 2:36 PM

Didn’t know they were still going strong. Good for them!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah, I know the owner pretty well.

Feb 23, 2020, 2:41 PM

They've evolved over the years...upgraded the facility (the dining room probably holds 150 people)...added some new menu items...but their bread and butter is still good ol' fried flounder, calabash skrimps and cole slaw.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Calabash skrimps.

held unless they occurred at Catawba Fish Camp. Also ate far too many lunches there back in the day when I was working the Lancaster County territory.

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I bet I haven’t been to that place in probably 30 years.

Feb 24, 2020, 10:28 AM

If I ever make it back that way, I’m gonna be sure to check it out. I’d kill for some right now. Had to fast for bloodwork. Almost to the end of the fast. Might be some breakfast tacos in my very near future.

My last year coaching baseball was the last time I went.

It's always been good, but I think Palmetto Seafood between York and Kings Mountain is better, and one of the few places around that regularly have frog legs. It used to be worth the ride to Big Daddy's Of Lake Norman for oysters, but I haven't been in years to know if that's the place for oysters anymore.

Friday night was Fish Camp night growing up in RH.

Feb 23, 2020, 11:19 AM

We had several good'urns...Harbor Inn was our family fave, The Pilot Wheel was where my high school buds and I would go because a girl I was dating waited tables and if we went late, she would serve us pitchers of beer (we were 16), and The Fish Hook was pretty good too...but the REAL treat was riding to Gastonia to eat at Lineberger's. They had fantastic food AND the biggest candy counter.

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

we would eat at Linebergers a good bit

Feb 23, 2020, 11:31 AM

Mom was from Dallas and Dad from Rock Hill so we could drive over to meet both clans and have a grand time.

We'd drive from Spartanburg to go to Linebergers. 2 or 3 car loads every time. The food was always very good. I'd forgotten about that place. Is it still open?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The Lineberger's closed it in the maybe mid-90s

Feb 24, 2020, 8:44 AM

but then it reopened maybe within a year using the same name but under new owners, and finally changed names maybe 10 years ago or so. Not sure of the exact timeline here, but the original Lineberger's is long gone. We took a group of 10 or so of us the last week they were open with the Lineberger family in charge.

ringofhonor-rhtig.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Funny, I've been to Lineberger park

Feb 24, 2020, 8:52 AM [ in reply to Friday night was Fish Camp night growing up in RH. ]

countless times. We could walk from my Aunt's house. I never went to Lineberger's for fish though. Papa-Aero was a Stowe's man.

Our family favorite was the Wagon Wheel in Cowpens. That was a long time ago.

Long time ago we used to go to a fish camp off Leicester Rd in Asheville. Been trying to think of the name for a while. It’s was so so so good. Maybe someone will know/remember.

My grandparents lived in Clemson and I recall

Feb 23, 2020, 3:15 PM

Going a lot to the 96 Fish Camp.

In Greenville, I’m not sure if the Old Mill Stream was a true fish camp, but it sure felt like one.

I don't know if the hipsters will ever

Feb 24, 2020, 8:53 AM

dive into the fish camp scene like they did BBQ though.

badge-donor-05yr.jpgringofhonor-aero.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Can they market fish camps as ironically authentic?

Feb 24, 2020, 9:56 AM

They fell in love with PBR for chrissakes, they'll put anything in their mouths.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They may have to go way way back to
