Final grades: After strong start, Clemson tight end group has mixed results

Clemson's tight ends started the 2020 season with a bang but faded in-and-out of the offense over the season. Taking a deeper look. Full Story »

I almost gave this a thumbs up.

I was so proud that the title referred to the tight ends as a “group” instead of a “room.”

Then I read the article, and it was all ruined.

I second that, but then I am more easily annoyed than your average bear.

I think Allen is better than Galloway. Hopefully he plays more next year

I agree. Allen is much better all around

That is what Tony Elliott and the grades state. Allen can block and catch.

Low TE production the last 3 years...what did those teams have in common..was it a quarterback that loved to throw it downfield...and was the best in college football at it? Maybe.

This is all on Tony Elliott

Galloway has the ability to make the BIG play and Allen is best suited for the SOLID play. I've seen Allen make many productive blocks downfield to help others & might have to give him the nod on best TE at this point. All the other guys have a shown talents, but I have no idea why this group gets ignored by Elliott. Hopefully, they get a chance to add their talents to the offense next year.

Give me Davis ten times over Galloway

Galloway is soft and a horrible blocker. He thinks he’s a WR, which he isn’t.

Davis knows exactly what he is and what his role is. He embraces it.

Lay is very disappointing so far and Ennis is still learning college level football.

Let’s hope TE improves this position group significantly.

My thought too. Maybe we need a yellow stickie on desk in front of our OC on game day which reads:
“Don’t forget the Tight Ends!”

I wonder if Lay could turn into a quality OT?

The one thing my Son and I discussed was the lack of physicality that the Tight Ends lack. You see other Tight Ends playing and they are looking to run someone over after the catch. Ours just seem to get out of bounds or go down easy.

Galloway vs Allen

Jan 23, 2021, 9:10 PM

I’m a fan of Braden Galloway and hope he gets better and better. But I just don’t understand why Davis Allen isn’t the starter. Clearly a better player.

Re: Galloway vs Allen or Lay

This was from 2 years ago. Why hasn't it worked out? Playbook? Effort? Other? I'm asking.

Quote:
Brent Venables analysis: "I've not seen a more competitive player than Jaelyn Lay. His skillset is super, super special. We (linebackers) matched up with the tight ends in camp and Jaelyn Lay is the most impressive tight end I have seen in a camp since I've been coaching. Hopefully he brings work ethic and toughness and competitiveness to grind with him - and I believe he will because I think he's made of the right stuff. I really like what he's about. I've been as impressed with him as anybody I've seen in camp, at any position."

Number to know: 4 - Touchdowns from a Clemson tight end over the last two seasons after Leggett scored 15 in the 2015-16 seasons
