Now that the baseball game is over

And we've successfully swept the hens in the Big 3 sports, i'm curious to know what the board thinks about Darius' comments in this interview. I guess I understand where he's coming from on some points, but I have mixed feelings about his whole comments in general.
What say you?

really dont think too many people cashed in on his likeness. I get the concept of the lawsuit, but it gets back to the ncaa issue. Either you drink the student athlete kool aid and think the individual $$ rights are not applicable, or you believe they are essntially professional athletes.

I agree to an extent

You didn't see any #8 or #21 (belive he wore 2 different numbers at Clemson) jerseys parading around on fans at football games, and if you did, they were for former players wearing the same number.
However, I fully agree with him feeling as if he should be compensated for his likeness being used in the NCAA Football video game series. From my experience, and apparently from Robinson's too, the players absolutely adored that video game. That goes to show that he was willing to sacrifice something he enjoyed, and something that his teammates close to him enjoyed, in order to take a stand against an organization (the NCAA, not CLemson) that has become power hungry toward their student-athletes

I agree with a lot that he says. The value of the education received, particularly for the elite players, is nowhere near the value these student athletes represent to the universities. Figuring out a fair compensation scale that addresses the nuance of revenue and non-renecue sports as well as bigger, higher revenue schools versus smaller schools without creating a greater gulf between the haves and have nots of the college sports world is not simple task, and there may really be no satisfactory solutions. The NCAA has been able to impose its will on institutions and particularly athletes. I think we are moving into unprecedented times and there may be some interesting changes ahead.

My thoughts almost exactly

I just hope people who read this interview feel like he's blaming Clemson for him not getting what he felt like he deserved. From what I gathered (and what I assume he meant) is that NCAA compliance put the university in a position where they couldn't compensate the players, therefore leading Clemson to allocate funds to various excessive purchases, rather than (in the ideal world Robinson proposes) providing that excess revenue to the players.

It really is so very complicated. One could even make a case for student athletes at a place like USC (the real one) or Stanford being paid more handsomely than southern schools because not only are they elite revenue sport schools, but they are also physically located in drastically more expensive areas (much like companies paying employees based on local cost of living. So much must go into all this, I suspect nothing will change, primarily because there are no simple answers and maybe more so because the NCAA has all parties by the twig and berries...
Sadly, I think a lot of Clemson fans completely dismiss DR as some entitled complainer or hustler without even really considering his position and certainly not seeing him as a thoughtful young man trying to make a conscientious stance. I don't doubt his own vision is somewhat clouded by his own perspective and youth, but I respect a lot of what he and athletes like him are trying to achieve.

The new football operations building was paid for by private donations from people who have the right to do what they want with their money. Novel idea that hard working, successful people can decide how, when, and why they give, invest or flat out "throw away " their money.

I think you're missing his point though. He's not putting blame on Clemson at all, but rather on the NCAA for prohibiting any of the excess revenue from being redistributed to the players that busted their ##### to generate that revenue.
Let's say you're a very popular, sought-after musician/comedian. You have a gig to perform that lasts Friday and Saturday. You are told that your room and board will be paid for, and that it's a fairly nice hotel. You also get $150 in prepaid credits for food, drinks, etc. You perform your show, and find out that it has grossed $700,000. However, you are told that you will not be receiving any portion of that money, and that you should be grateful for having a hotel room provided and $150 in food to eat. Would you want to put your full effort into performing your shows still, knowing that YOU - the act that people are paying hundreds of dollars to see - do not get ANY of the revenue that you were directly responsible for creating? I know I wouldn't, nor would most people.

"Clemson just spent 55 million on football operations"

Comment implies that this money was available to be spent elsewhere or came from university's funds. Clemson people just spent 55 million on a football operations building.

with your made up scenario that is so very different than student-athletes.
If you don't want to do a show for the amount agreed upon, then don't do it. If you want a portion of the $700k, then produce the show yourself. If you were stupid and made a bad deal for yourself to begin with, learn from your mistake and don't do it again.
