basketball recruiting

Jan 19, 2022, 3:09 PM

I feel Brownell is a good X and o's coach, but the one thing that stands out to me over the years is he is not able to consistently recruit 4/5 star players. To be a consistent winner you must have the better talent. What say you?

I’ve always hated this narrative. It’s akin to the Dabo is a great manager but can’t coach trope. Every D1 basketball coach is a good Xs and Os coach. It’s the actual minimum requirement for the job. Game management is not the same thing and Brownell is terrible at it. Brownell hasn’t reinvented the wheel.

He also does not have the on floor inspiration and adaptability and command to be a great coach

When have we recruited 4/5 star players? Heck, when have we ever consistently recruited half-decent 4 stars.

Next, we modern basketball being a "start from scratch" every year with transfers 1&Done, how does any program other than those mining nba-ready talent build any consistency?

i agree some what. 5 stars might be too hard to get...

right now unless upgrade the program some more, but should be at least getting more high ranked 3 star top 150 players to 4 star top 75 players.

Another factor is you can win with those high 3 star to 4 star players, but you have to develop them more.
Both Barnes and OP developed those type players who improved each season.

Dawes looked like he was going to be one of the best guards who ever played here--a high 3 star to 4 star guard played great games as a freshmen including game winning plays and shots, and he hasn't really shown any improvement in three seasons.

He was counted on being the next Mitchell or Reed, or even DeVoe.

Brad couldn't afford to have misses on the recruiting trail and has not been able to bring that type of guard through the transfer portal also...

OP didn't really develop anyone. That is kinda a miss for OP. Prime candidate. Vernon Hamilton. He was one of the quickest kids, perfect defender, and had about as much headroom I have seen but lacked an offensive punch. Vernon never progressed to be an offensive threat. He stumbled into Booker's gold.

Rick Barnes did better developing but not for NBA talent lever aka-Buckner/Grey but rather some of the additional cogs. Still kinda worked it out but still lost when he ran into better talent.

Hamilton was not one of the best but he did get the program improving to a higher level as he was a part of OP's first full class After he graduated the program went to a higher level of NCAAT bids.

Vernon was one of the best defensive PGs at Clemson as he was named to the ACC All-Defensive team his junior and senior seasons. Also holds the carrier for steals at Clemson:
