None of the Final Four programs are any good in football

Mar 28, 2022, 1:45 PM

I suppose one could argue that UNC is “okay” ... but, nah ... not really.

That short run that Florida Gators had at the top in both sports simultaneously that fans like to use as an example was an anomaly.

And now they’re not very good in either one.

All Florida has to do is keep firing coaches without making any other changes and they will soon be on top (per the Tnet hater braintrust).

Lets see...

Spurrier
Zook
Strong
Meyer
Cusschamp
Durkin
Shannon
Mullen
Knox
Napier

Napier is TBD. Spurrier was a success. The rest were failures. Yes Meyer won two Championships but UF grads should be embarrassed by the way he ran the program.

Wait. Didn’t you add some extra names in there?

And you’re saying 2 national championships don’t count?

LOL

We're just the opposite - are a national-caliber Final 4....

program in football but are nowhere to be seen in basketball.

It's all where a school puts its money and attention.

Well yes ... exactly!***

I have been amazed over the last decades. On average they get in very good talent. They have trouble using it.

Nova decent in FBS.

Technically, Villanova is pretty good in football (I realize they're in the FBS).

Their record with former Head Coach Andy Talley is pretty dang good though. They have some notable alums too in Howie Long, Brian Finneran, Brian Westbrook and Tanoh Kpassagnon. Villanova won the D-1 AA National Championship in 2009 and continues to be competitive with playoff appearances in the FBS in many recent years.

I realize this isn't what you were getting at but thought it was worth mentioning.

I agree on Florida...

they were fortunate to get Donovan and that he remained loyal in staying there for so many years. He had shoddy fan support throughout but his family loved it there. He turned down better jobs...their success was having the best possible coach that was committed to being there. It was nothing the university did themselves.

Ranking the final four football programs...

#1 Nova (Division II National Champion, most conference titles since 1988 - when they stopped being independent)
#2 Duke Most Conference titles (17, 7 current conf, last 1989)
#3 UNC 9 conference titles, 6 current conf, last 1980
#4 Kansas 6 Conference Titles, none of the current conference, last 1968 (dang, worse than the coots)

Is it sad that the "best" isn't D1?
