I know without question that Colin Kaepernick isn't a hero, yet both he and Nike are making a buck claiming he is, sooooo...
Anyway, to me it just reads as a consolation prize. As in "Fine, he's not a murderer, but he's not a hero!" Not your call. I think it's reasonable to assume that the broader media won't portray him as such, nor the government. So if there's any institutional push, it will be from right wing orgs (NRA? I dunno). But ultimately, people pick their heroes. Kyle Rittenhouse doesn't make the grade for me, nor would I wish my kids to emulate his decisions. On the other hand, he went INTO the danger, by some accounts to serve and protect, when those who are supposed to serve and protect couldn't/wouldn't. If someone considers that heroic, I understand that.
Also, on this whole "this entire episode will encourage militias and vigilante justice", I guess we'll see, but I doubt it. That kid didn't look happy on that stand. That kid was facing a looooong time in prison if the facts presented just a little less clear. Conversely, I'm glad, given the facts as they were outlined, he was found not guilty and we aren't encouraging rioters and looters that it's their own personal Purge Day and anyone who gets in their way is fair game.

You have it completely wrong... what encourages militias and vigilante justice is when Government fails to do its fundamental function of maintaining law and order. We pay lots of tax dollars to our Government so that unruly, angry mobs aren't allowed to freely riot in our streets destroying our towns, businesses and homes.
When Government (be it at the local, State, or National level) continually fails to provide law and order (in this case a whole summer of it where the Government intentionally did nothing to quell the destructive riots) eventually the citizens are going to take matters into their own hands to defend their towns and property. THAT is what spawns vigilantism and it will only get worse if Government fails to meet its law and order obligations.
