Hate to be Debbie Downer, but many and probably most Achilles’ tendon ruptures

Apr 4, 2021, 10:56 AM

Don’t return to competitive sports. Correct me if I’m wrong orthos. For those that do make it back it’s not uncommon to be 1-2 years. I hope that the initial diagnosis is wrong or that not a complete rupture. I’ll say a prayer for TP today.

I partially tore my achilles many years ago. Doctors debated on surgery or letting it heal by itself. I chose the latter. It did heal, but it took years before I was free of pain. I was told by doctors that it's a very delicate surgery.

Don't have a clue, but I did read this last night

At best it's 22 before he can play. Just hope/pray for a FULL recovery for the Young Man.

A lot is determined by where the tear takes place. If it is up in the calf, like mine was, they heal pretty well and quickly. The closer to the foot, the longer the process and higher probability for permanent damage.

I think they return now. Look at Kevin Durant.

Yeah more and more are coming back. He was out

Over a year and a half.

Medical science is truly amazing on today’s world.

Seems like it's definitely a year. Takes forever. I think they can return though. Taisun may have to adapt his game some. Who knows? There is hope though.

I agree. As seen in this thread alone

Several have made it back recently. 10-15 years ago it was all but the kiss of death. But it’s definitely a process and will take hard work. But I agree I think he can do it and thankfully has the resources available to him to get back

Soroka is doing well. He was hurt in August and is already making minor league starts. They hope to have him back in the majors by the end of April.

I don’t think the injury is always the same. Richard Sherman tore his in the 9th game of the season and was back at the start of the following year.

As others have commented, recovery time

Apr 4, 2021, 2:14 PM

depends on location and severity. There was a time when you heard "Achilles" and you knew a career was over. It's not the death sentence it was. However, as someone pointed out, it's delicate surgery on a highly stressed tendon. Tendons don't have the blood supply muscles do so the heal time is longer..plus rehab has to be very very structured. It's not a rehab where there is a lot of extra work to be done. It has to heal and then you have to be judicious when you start putting weight on it again to not reinjure it. But just in general-blood supply =faster healing. I noticed there was no way he was going to let that foot touch the ground. Sprains etc, you'll see them at least touch the ground a little bit for balance. This was obviously excruciatingly painful. I hurt for the kid. Hopefully all will turn out well. It was obvious he had worked hard and his passing was extremely improved. He dropped the ball into places which frankly amazed me.

I tore mine about 15 years ago 80% torn. I doubt he can come back this year unless it's a very slight tear. After surgery what happens is the calf muscle has to be rebuilt because it basically goes away. When I tore mine, I had to be in a cast for 6 weeks and a boot for another six weeks. And actually one of our former punters Dad (Teasdall) was the Doctor that did my surgery.

It's a tough recovery, I wish him all the best. It's too bad because it looked like he was starting to really play well.

I had this injury on my left achilles playing league softball. Very painful and took about 18 months of rehab to make a full recovery. Not fun.
