One first down

Nov 10, 2020, 8:50 AM

That's all we needed to run the clock out on the Domers and get the W.

I guess Dabo decided to leave it in the D's hands

The play calls on our last possession in regulation were so so vanilla.
Especially since we hadn't run the ball well all night.

Playing not to lose usually ends in a loss.

Note: Don't go conservative, keep running the offense that got you the lead.
Just my opinion...

I agree - we started to play not to lose instead of.......

playing to win. There was no realistic reason to think at that point in the game to think our defense would stop them given how banged up our defense was. We should have stayed aggressive on offense instead of being afraid of turning the ball over or whatever the concerns were.

Totally agree. We had a greater probability of getting a first down throwing the rock than relying on a stagnant run game.

For Notre Dame to score the game tying TD they scored their (checks notes) SECOND offensive TD of the entire night!

The only other offensive TD they scored came on a one play drive where we missed a run fit on the first play of the game.

We made some defensive mistakes that gave ND the TD, but it's not like our coaches should have known that ND was going to drive 91 yards in under 2 minutes and actually be able to finish the drive with a TD.

They hadn't done that for the entire game.

I wish we would have found a way to get a first down and ended the game with the ball as much as the next guy, but this isn't 2011 and we don't have to be scared to put our defense on the field, even with a handful of players missing.

that is how Dabo calls it

and we win most of the time

I agree though, throw the ball and get some first downs

Yeah, a true freshman on the road up 7 against a top D and for the rest of the night, our D was holding them. Vanilla is what you have to work with. DJ is great, was playing great, but that is the thing with young guys, they remind you of being a freshman at the worst times in most cases.

Give ND some credit, they did what they needed to do and for once is 6-7 years, our D did not hold a 7 point lead on the last possession.

I hope we get them in the ACC game with our main cohort back.

let it go already, if the team was still hanging on to this

we'd end up with a Tommy Bowden season.

absolutely NO

Reason to snap the ball until you have ONE second on the clock. Who doesn’t know thiis?

Never run out of bounds to stop the clock. Who doesn’t know this?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

did you write Dabo a letter?

Nov 10, 2020, 10:55 AM

maybe he can hire you as a football-obvious! He apparently needs that, perhaps we can win a conference championship or something bigger? Maybe I'm just dreaming!?

Yall act like this is something new. We *never* really try

to pick up the 1st down in those situations. That's been consistent during this entire run as an elite team. If we get the ball back with a chance to kill the clock, Dabo is going to tell them to run it 3x. We actually "mixed it up" a little on Saturday by throwing it out to Etienne on 3rd down, but the only real difference is that we failed to burn clock and make ND use any TOs. I'm not sure why the clock never ran after the hold on 2nd down - maybe there's a rule somewhere regarding this - but we ran 3 extremely conservative plays as we always do and then punted. This is nothing new. Of course we don't have the dominant defense right now that Dabo usually trusts to close out these games so you could make an argument his philosophy should have changed Saturday night, but I'm really shocked that anyone here is surprised by our approach to that situation. It's what we always do - ALWAYS.

Also, it wasn't as simple as getting one 1st down and winning the game. There were over 2 minutes left on the clock and ND had all 3 TOs. It would've taken at least 6 plays to kill the entire clock there. If we - for instance - threw on 1st down and picked up 10 yards, we are still in a pretty similar situation only 10 yards further down the field. To really win the game with the offense there we would've needed to run on at least 1st down and maybe 1st and 2nd down. We probably would've gotten zero yards because we were getting zero yards running the ball all night. So we are talking about picking up a 1st down after going to 2nd or 3rd and ~10.

Anyway, it would've been interesting to see us try to slip a TE down the seam or something there, but given Dabo's track record for how he handles these situations, everyone really should've been expecting 3 runs and a punt. Of course we also should've expected ND to have no TOs left when they got the ball back.

I agree with your assessment of the situation. Making them use the timeouts seemed to be the right thing to do. Doing nothing seemed to be the wrong thing to do!
