Question to those going to the Auburn game....
Jul 26, 2012, 8:31 AM

Looks like my buddies and I plan on going to ATL early Saturday, and then just driving back to Clemson after the game. Not sure what the parking situation is at the Georgia Dome. Is there tailgating during the day at the Stadium parking lot? If so, how much is it to park there all day?
If not, where do you guys plan on parking that won't be incredibly expensive?

There is plenty of parking around the dome. For the Chick-fil-a bowl against Auburn, we parked across the street from the doome for like $40. Personally I will never fall for the Marta trap again. It is a disaster after the game.

DO NOT TAKE MARTA!!!!!!!!!
Jul 26, 2012, 8:47 AM

1) They don't let you take coolers on the train to tailgate near the stadium
2) The wait to get on the train after the game is awful. You are better off walking to the 5 points station than waiting at the GaDome station.
3) They only run the short trains at that time of night. They may have the larger ones from the Dome to 5 points, but you just to change trains there to get the north/northeast trains. If you are hellbent on taking MARTA, then get on the westbound train from the Dome and go 2 stops down. Then get back on the eastbound train.
Just park down near the dome. If you are in a dome lot they are capped at price and there are plenty of spaces. They are easy to get to off Northside Drive and easy to get back on the highway. Just avoid the Red Deck.

Be very careful about going west on MARTA....

The further west you go toward West Lake, Bankhead and Hamilton, the more dangerous its gets.
Even the stop at Ashby can be a little dicey late at night.
This isn't a lesson you want to learn the hard way.

it was midnight, New Years Eve...every drunk freak in Atlanta was on the prowl riding MARTA.
One of the escalators collapsed from the weight of the folks riding. One of my friends was on it at the time and bailed over the side, avoiding injury.
Even under those crazy circumstances, it wasn't THAT bad of an experience. We got out and back to our hotel in Buckhead without too much delay.

It's a very short walk back to the hotel form the Dome and I can avoid MARTA completely.

Parking near the stadium is not bad at all. If you are good with a 2-3 block walk, you can park for $20. Tailgating is about as good as you can expect from a blacktop setting, but it's something. Last year they had all sorts of things set up outside the stadium prior to the game.

we like to be in the middle of it all (+ 2 free passes to the fan zone). You can get those parking permits on the Chick-fil-A kickoff classic website.

I'm parking at my office. Believe it's $4 for non-members...

... but I could be wrong. From 85 / 75 south, take exit 249A for Courtland St. Take Courtland to Andrew Young International Blvd. The parking garage is on the left right away (and there is another entrance a little farther up if you miss the first entrance. But don't cross the next street, or you'll have to do 3 right turns to get back to the garage.
NOW . . . the garage is about a 3 minute walk past the furthest out tailgating areas. Considering you pay about 1/5 - 1/10 less than on site, it's definitely worth it -- especially if you and your buddies are poor college students. I've been to a night Falcons game, and I didn't feel unsafe walking back to the garage because there are lots of people around. I did see a pimp and ho dressed in the full getup, but hey, they weren't threatening (and I definitely was not buying).
Anyhow, don't hold me to the $4 price. It may be $5, but no matter what it's way cheaper than the closer parking.

If you are staying in Atlanta, just take a cab.

I live in Atlanta and that's what I'm planning to do. Avoids the hassle of having to park at the game. Cabs in Atlanta aren't really that steep.

They could open up Piedmont Park but any parking will be expensive however many houses, stores, and businesses will open there lots for you to park in, just don't hesitate to park because it'll be gone.

because I've only been once and can't remember how much it was...
but however much it costs is better than the Marta.
Trying to ride the marta after a game is a terrible idea. DON'T DO IT!!!
