The series with Taisun

Oct 24, 2021, 10:18 AM

I had almost assumed that the coaching staff believed that DJ could not deal with Taisun coming in from time to time. DJ, however, was enthusiastic and supportive of Taisun while he was in there and DJ came back in and led us to a touchdown.

I don't think that Taisun is the answer, but I do think that DJ would have opportunities for growth if he can see the good and the bad of how someone else runs the same offense. Since DJ's ego was evidently not so fragile, why have we not seen Taisun earlier in the year?

DJ almost looked relieved when they took him out

Not sure. But agree with both of you. Just posted in another thread, thought DJ played much more relaxed when he came in that last series.., I really hate our D didn't give him one more chance because I was anxious to see how DJ looked in back to back series there.

I think the answer is very simple.

DJ is our best QB, gives us the best chance to win, and we are much more limited and easier to defend with TP at QB.

Should Taisun have been brought in before today, if only for a series or two, just to settle DJ down, or give him a reality check, or just to change things up? Maybe, but let's be honest, as badly as DJ has struggled, and as ugly as it's been at times, we are even more limited with Taisun at QB.

Hunter is a friend of mine's nephew and I still will not make that argument. He has done great when he has gotten his chance, but it needs to be understood the situations where those chances occurred.

I agree that DJ is currently the better option and certainly has a bigger upside. It just seems to me like the coaching staff has been treating him with kid gloves. I think that Taisun playing at times when DJ is struggling would help both of them grow.

My thoughts go beyond the playing field. The coaching staff has tripped over itself to avoid criticizing DJ's play. I know that a lot of people on here go beyond criticizing his play, but that does not mean that the coaching staff should avoid fair criticism to make up for it. It just seems to me that DJ is mentally tougher than many are giving him credit for.

I had to go back and rewatch some of the game based on some comments like this about TP7.

Maybe it's just me, but I didn't see anything that says "Taisun limits our offense more so than DJU5".

Someone mentioned the long pass TP7 threw was an injured duck so I took this as it was an ugly ball that didn't go far....What the heck did I see when it was a nice pass that was over Ajou's head? I can agree that may have not been the right read/best choice but if we had a burner on offense (or someone with a little fight to go up and get it) those passes would be fine to take a shot on.

Otherwise, I definitely disagree with the notion TP7 makes us super limited. The first drive he led was great!

Am I saying this definitely unseats DJU5 as the starter? No, that last drive DJU5 looked a lot more in command so I'm interested to see if that carries over to next week.

However. TP7 definitely looks like someone I wouldn't write off as being able to run this offense based on 2 series

Though I believe DJ to be the better choice, I am not writing Taisun off. I thought that both QB's probably did OK yesterday, but it was tough to judge because of how poorly the receivers played. There were at least 3 drops with DJ and 1 with Taisun.

There were also some other cases where the receivers could have made good plays but didn't. Poor blocking on wide receiver screens look bad on DJ's stat sheet although he did his part on the play. I don't know if Ross got off balance on DJ's first interception, but it looked to me like if he attacks the ball, it is a big completion instead of going the other way.

When I think about Taisun's incompletions, there was one drop, one where the timing was off just a fraction on an out route, and a overthrown pass on a fly route that would have been as good as a punt if it was intercepted. I am wanting to say the other was a throw away but I am not sure. Even though the statistics don't look good, I didn't think that it was a bad performance. I hope that he gets some more chances, and though I would be surprised if he unseated DJ, I would not be shocked.

My thought is that he is more limited in the sense that he has gotten far fewer reps in practice than DJ. More reps in practice would provide more options in game.

Yep for all the criticism there was none about how he handled coming out. He was fine with that or at least handled it fine

I’ve said it since the GT game, DJ isn’t ready. Taisun may not be the QB to get us to a National championship, but he can definitely move the ball and get us scores, and wins against mediocre ACC teams. Playing DJ while he’s struggling doesn’t help him. It only hurts his confidence. DJ needs more time to develop. He has every tool he needs to win championships except development. Put in other QB’ s and give them a shot . All we have to play for now is a bowl. And maybe add some depth at QB .
GO TIGERS!!!!!
