Their last 5 years of recruiting averaged #14 (2017: #6, then #11, #19, #21, 2021: #22)

So, why aren't they at least in Top 25? Or winning record.

Great question.

My answers.

1. For three years, at least, they got very poor coaching (on and off field).
2. Their ranking is overrated.

Let me expand on #2.

FSU had, and to some extent, a "built-in recruiting guru bias." The internet services who rank recruits love to get subscribers. Their main "recruiting tool" they use to get subscribers is to focus on recruiting. (Check out rivals.com. They tease you with some free stuff, but when it comes to "inside information" on recruiting it is almost always hidden behind a pay wall - subscribers only.)

So, the schools that have the most subscribers tend to have their recruiting classes ranked higher. Example: FSU gets a commit from a HS junior. He's ranked as a three-star. By the time he is halfway through his senior year, he is upgraded to a 4 star.

I don't think FSU is the only school where this happens. Think of any of the "blue bloods" - Michigan, Texas, LSU, etc. I expect FSU's recruiting ranking will be lower than it has been in the past three years because our shine is wearing off. But, I expect the actual talent level to be better than it has been in the past three years.

I have a friend who calls the gurus "fat hot dog eaters." Great coaches pay as much attention to the "fat hot dog eaters" as NFL general managers pay attention to Mel Kiper. Dabo doesn't look at the ESPN 300 when he's looking at HS recruits. Dabo doesn't think, "We need to sign another 4 star so we can move ahead of Alabama in recruiting rankings."

Don't get me wrong. Rankings mean something. But, FSU has been over-rated by the recruitniks for at least the past three years.

Unfortunately for Seminole fans, all that means is that they have to watch all of these scrubs taking up scholarships for several more years!

In your opinion Bret, is this a good thing?

My take is that with an old roster you would be close to a good bit of turnover and Norvell could bring in a large number of players that were his choosing.

Unless he forces a ton of players out the door, it will take even more time to get his guys in because he won't have the available scholarships to offer.

Also, obviously older players are usually better, but it seems like your best players are still your juniors and seniors. I haven't followed FSU closely this year to know about their up-and-comers but the names you hear on Saturdays are older.

I know some bad attitudes are leaving with the senior class, but is the top talent leaving with them too?

My great friend Tim Smith who died of leukemia right before their great fall was an avid graduate & fan. We always watched the games together, he would be so upset of how Jimbo as I called him and he called Dabo Dumbo, left this team when he left.

The biggest question I know he would have would be why did they hire Taggart. Jimbo left them in a bad place but Taggart destroyed the reputation of FSU as a contender.
