I know who 1 of them is and they are tired of lil Ole Clemson coming into their state

Aug 8, 2022, 7:42 AM

To pluck the good players out. Kirby "Slime-ball" Smart will sling mud against everyone but especially Clemson and Bama. Then Ole Ryan "rosey cheeks" Day comes in 2nd place for having diarrhea of the mouth against Clemson. He did literally spend an entire off season preparing for the rematch. Both those guys are the worst! Go Tigers!

I already know where this isn't going, but I'll ask anyway. Specifically, what "mud" has Kirby Smart slung about Clemson?

No specifics

This felt like a trigger question but not much came of it.

With all the recruits making surprise final destination announcements plus the transfer portal being an inherent part of the game these days, we SHOULD hear more specifics about negative recruiting.

But we haven't. Like, not even a little bit, but especially here at Clemson (make no mistake, any specific story would be front page news immediately). I heard Darion Kendrick say UGA's practices are "tougher" than Clemson's, & that's about it from the UGA side (& I wouldn't even call that negative by nature).

I'm not insisting it doesn't happen, I'm sure it does. It's part of the game. EVERYONE gets negative recruiting talk. Maybe we don't do it at Clemson? I don't know. But I feel like Clemson's recruiting strategy is vastly more unique than this question & response explain is all, know what I mean?

Re: No specifics

They tell recruits that Clemson plays in the ACC (minor league), come play in the SEC or Big 10 if they want a pro career all the time. Even though the ACC has many past national champs (Clemson, Ga Tech, FSU, Miami, etc…..)

Dabo is going for quality people and athletes, focused on their future, including graduation.
Most of the others are just after football players (NFL feeder programs). A big difference.
If a player cannot tell the difference, we probably lose them, which is a screening process.
That’s why you see many criminals in the news from programs at Georgia, USC, Ohio State etc…..
Crimes like armed robbery and murder…..

Dabo knows……

Re: No specifics

Aug 8, 2022, 10:14 AM

1. How do you know that's what the tell recruits? 2) Is it negative if it happens to be true?

Since you brought up robbery, weren't Jadar Johnson and CJ Fuller arrested for robbery? Did the screening miss on them? How did Watson slide through the process? Since Dabo would never recruit a kid with a proclivity for prostitues (you know, screening), did Watson learn that behavior while at Clemson?

I'm neither bashing Dabor nor Clemson (my son is a grad). I'm pushing back on this idea that Dabo is the only HC who cares about the young men he recruits or has some magical insight into the moral goodness of people. People are flawed, some of those flawed peple are football players, some of those flawed football players played at Clemson. When that happens, it says nothing bad about Dabo or Clemson.

Ironically, just like DK,

both Jadar and CJ were no longer with the team at the time of their arrests. DW was never arrested.

What was that kids’ name that spunked in his high-school teammates Powerade bottle that played at UGA?

I find it very strange that all of the Watson scandal wasn't apparent before he became a little perturbed with the Texan back office. I think that Cal and Janice McNair didn't like the fact that Watson was questioning their winning strategy. Sure he settled. Hell, who wouldn't. I'd venture to say that if all was peachy in Houston none of it would have been allegated.

Then Ole Ryan "rosey cheeks" Day

When Day was hired, I commented on 11 warriors (best ohio state website) that he looked like an Asian Luke Fickell. It was based on the attached photo they she posted. Fickell was the buckeyes LB coach at the time.

Great story, great school, great coach. My guess is the vast majority of coaches around the country make comments about other schools a recruit is considering. It is simple as Clemson does not have a Chick fil A on campus. I am sure you remember that one from a few years ago. Of course a coach would not praise another school, that is just common practice.

10-3 record with 50 scholarship players.
Of those, most were freshman and sophomores.

UGA won a Natty with all seniors and juniors and very few injuries. Lol.

Aug 8, 2022, 1:06 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: Swinney says other schools 'ain't negative enough' when recruiting against Tigers ]

And they won against the Tigers only bc of a major mistake by our QB that had one of the worst seasons in his entire FB career at that point of last years game against UGA. It has been said for as far back as I can remember, that the teams with great defenses are the teams that win championships. UGA done nothing great on offense in that game, and it was their great defense that won the game, and not their top rated OL of college FB bc, Clemson's defense shut down one of the best O Lines in college FB in 2021, but UGA's defense sacked DJ Seven times, and forced a pick 6.

When you look at our 2021 game against the dogs, the difference in that game was a 74 Yd Interception Return for a pick 6. Take that one play away, and we take the dogs into OT, and that game still would have been a 50-50 out come for a winner. So IMO, UGA coaches, players and fans really don't have much to brag about in their win over Clemson in 2021, especially with UGA having one of the best OL's in college FB 2021. And for anybody that wants to see the facts of the game, here, I'll save you the time of looking up the game stats of that entire game.

https://www.espn.com/college-football/boxscore?gameId=401281946

Take away the pick 6, and it was either teams game in OT. For our Clemson fans, I think that that one game could have set DJ's season. This is the reason I believe a match up of two heavy weights should never be the first game of the season where neither team has had a chance to knock the rust off from the summer off season bc, in those types of games at the start of a season, the loser is usually the team that made a costly mistake like DJ's made in his 1st season as a starting QB.

In DJ's first season as a starting QB, and with his first game of the season being against a team that went on to win the NC game. DJ threw a pick 6, and he was sacked 7 times in his game against UGA. If the damage hadn't already been done with DJ by starting the season against a heavy weight like UGA, a team loaded with junior/senior 4/5 star players. If our season hadn't started out with UGA, I totally believe that our teams season would have been a lot different than it was, and none of us, or the media would be asking the question, how will DJ react from a terrible 2021 season, the actual truth to that question is that nobody has a clue. I will say the answer is in his head, and how he has processed what happen with him last season. Has he had enough time to get the thoughts of last season out of his head to where it doesn't affect him this season. Miracles do happen in cases like his some times, it happened with Peyton Manning after his first season in the NFL, and it was much worst than any season that DJ has had!!! That is my opinion, and I'm sticking to it bc, it makes sense to me!!!

Good win on Georgia's part. They should be thankful; is all I can say to them. I've heard some realist - non-hyper-fake-enthuiastic been there since the begining when Georgia was horrible fans say; "they got lucky Clemson wasn't it's usual self"!

I ignore the rest - because despite all the great recruiting classes over the years they usually messed it up. With better OL and QB play - which clearly wasn't just Georgia's defense since we(Clemson) also struggled against GT. And, other teams too.

Back to the negative recruiting piece - kids recruit kids. Coaches who network and have had bad experiences with some of these other programs - talk! Because they talk - Clemson just needs to continue distinguisihing itself by being "a cut above in terms of being there for the player as a whole that goes beyond football playing career"!

Graduation rate still matters to some smart people who are advising these kids.
Not being thrown away like a bad piece of garbage after you get something newer and shinier and more eligibility matters.
Being treated like a person 1st and a football asset 2nd matters still to parents/coaches/players!

Clemson still needs to win and I think Clemson is set up to win a bunch right now! If this continues; even if the ultimate goal isn't reached. Kids will still come here; I have no doubt.

Who can't come up with a better question?

Aug 8, 2022, 8:51 AM

They ASKED him about negative recruiting, though, just out of the blue with no other info or even a rumor?

The negative recruiting part isn't unique to us here at Clemson, to be fair, but Coach Swinney saying nothing has changed? I don't get that part.

I get the philosophy part being unchanged, like many places, but Clemson had a recruiting explosion following the launch of our NIL collectives, something many D1 schools still don't have. We're still reaping the benefits of it too, & the first-of-its-kind NIL & Branding Institute hasn't even opened yet (still slated for this month!).

Some change is good, and negative recruiting happens literally everywhere, but I'd suggest only that Clemson has changed WITH the times faster & more streamlined than many fans & negative recruiters alike have noticed.

Re: Who can't come up with a better question?

Aug 8, 2022, 1:38 PM

What has not changed according to the Chief himself, he doesn't allow a big number of offers, and he only offers players that fits what Clemson is looking for, and anytime an offered recruit gets off the path that got them an offer, the Clemson coaching staff will kindly inform that recruit that they've decided to go in a different direction, and that usually happens when a recruit that has an offer commits to Clemson, and he decides he wants to take more visits. Dabo believes that a recruit isn't all in if he still wants to take visits, and it that happens, Dabo wants that recruit all out of the offer. I think that is pretty close how that goes bc, Dabo tell them all, don't commit if you're not finished with taking visits!!!

Whenever this subject comes up, which is too often, I always

Aug 8, 2022, 9:08 AM

harken back to Dabo's Hiring Press Conference, where he had the greatest answer to a question, ever. He was asked, something to the effect of, "Was he going to try and build a Clemson program to be like Michigan, or Ohio State, etc."

His answer, close as I can remember, was "That's not my vision for Clemson at all. My vision is that we build a program here at Clemson such that THEY want to be like US."

And, I'll be darned if that little walk-on cheerleader hasn't DONE IT!

Aug 8, 2022, 12:36 PM [ in reply to Whenever this subject comes up, which is too often, I always ]

I don't want to build a program like everybody else; "I want to make a program that they want to model their program after"!

Exactly!

Think about something: "Clemson offers the 4th fewest; yet Clemson routinely pulls in 5-star and 4-star players. To include the number one overall class a couple seasons ago"!

Think about that for just a second!!!!!!!!

***if Clemson/Dabo was to carpet bomb it's recruiting instead of precision striking - the number of 4 and 5-star players only go up.

I seem to recall a few players making statements that were basically stating: "Clemson never offered me so I don't like them"! Which tells me they were looking for that offer. They wanted it; but something didn't sit well with the staff and it never came. Hmmmm!

I like Dabo's response and philosophy. I'm sure recruits share negative things other schools say, but honestly, what can you say negative about Clemson?

There wasn't

Aug 8, 2022, 10:18 AM

This was just a random question with no news or quote that sparked it off.

It's hard to fill the time & keep a coach talking during these things I guess, but that's kinda what makes some of these reporting jobs seem so trite & icky.

There might be something to this if you look RB for 2022 and 2023 classes.

Other schools, my ###, Clemson fans on here were as negative as Georgia or any other school. At 4-3, a lot of you were saying Clemson was done and recruiting was ruined. Just admit it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: Swinney says other schools 'ain't negative enough' when recruiting against Tigers

Aug 8, 2022, 11:27 AM

Sounds like the biggest thing other schools are telling recruits is that Clemson’s run is over based on last year. They better use that while they can because I believe the opportunity to capitalize on our “down year” is going to be short-lived.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Forget Other Schools!

Aug 8, 2022, 12:45 PM

In 2015 when Alabama had the #1 composite class; Clemson had the #17th ranked composite class: yet it took a desperation onside kick to help defeat the Tigers!

In 2016 when Clemson defeated Alabama the class was a composite #11 ranked.

Isiah Simmons, Grady Jarrett, K'von Wallace, James Skalski, Travis Etienne(Rivals),Hunter Renfrow, and more(I have listed a bunch of them several times). All these players were all 3-star or lower players.

In short, Dabo has maximized the few 4 and 5-star players when they get on campus. He's taken them and surrounded them with guys that can play the game at a high level; but probably needed some weight room work or speed and conditioning work to take that next step. But, only if they have the right mental makeup!
In short, based on the long list(again far more than I have listed above) of players Clemson has developed into All ACC players or higher - I think the selective offers can continue. Typically, these are kids who can see through the B.S. and understand that "other schools" are going to tell you a bunch of colorful, non-truthfull stuff just to get you. A smart kid and parents/coach/advisor will do their own homework(which is what Clemson typically attract under Dabo). So, they maybe trying hard, but these players have access to "the data"! A bunch of a recruiters "fast talk" won't fool someone who can "go check for themselves"!
