New Story: Spring battles: Can Smith and Lamar make a move at linebacker?

Spring battles: Can Smith and Lamar make a move at linebacker?

What do you do when you lose over 1400 snaps at linebacker from the 2015 season? You go out and sign the number one and number three linebackers nationally at their position, get them to enroll early and take part in spring practice.

Fascinating thought on Shaq Smith, that he could maybe move to weakside rush end like a Vic Beasley. Could be the solution...mostly because I kinda see a...problem brewing. The problem is, with a full year now in the system, I think Chad Smith will be ahead of Shaq Smith/Tre Lamar right now, is very comparable physically, and and will probably grab one of the open spots. I also think Jalen Williams, while a bit small, is just too good to just sit...the guy was a live wire when he was in against Wake and his closing speed turned my head around. Guy was like a dreadlocked blur going to the ball. Lotta good players here, competing for not a lot of spots....

Ah, well...Uptown problems, again. Still be interesting to see how it all shakes out.

Sick two deep, which is needed, and will be fun to watch as the season progresses.

"Jalen Williams, while a bit small, is just too good to just sit"

Boulware was hurt and Williams still didn't come in and play doubt he ever starts . Hopefully O'Daniel will change position or transfer so his talent isn't wasted at SLB.

IMO I think O'Daniel is really good sorry I would rather watch him play somewhere else and make the NFL than watch him waste his talent and only play 181 snaps at Clemson. Don't see what the problem is with what I said

He'll start this year and you'll look like an idiot. Wiggins is moving to safety.

So why didn't he start over Blanks who is much slower than O'Daniel ? Wanna make a bet ? If I win the bet you no longer post on here and if you win then I won't post anymore . Don’t let your mouth write a check that your a$$ can’t cash.

You might have been all in in 52, but you are not now hoping one of our best players would transfer - what kind of fan are you? I would never bet against one of our players, and I know any ALL IN fan would not either 50% IS A FAILURE!

No Thank you. I'll just enjoy the knowledge of your intense hate.

BTW, O'Daniel is a redshirt junior this coming year.

I don't need to wait two years on a bet with fan of another school.

Why don't you contribute some cash to this site to spout your drivel?

BTW - He started against Georgia State in 2014. Are you still here?

In BV I believe in, and he will figure it all out, put it all together. Come game time September, 3 in Auburn Alabama, BV will have our D shored up enough to enable our Offense to beat down the whoreagles in their house.

D.O'D is a beast at Sam.

Can't wait to see him for two full years at that spot.

I think SS moving to DE would be great! We need more depth there and we has LB covered. Either way he is going to beast it doesn't matter where they put him. In sure he will see the field somehow this year! I'm excited to see him and Tre and Chad in the spring game!!!

I saw Lamar play 3 times his Sr year at Roswell

Feb 27, 2016, 2:13 PM

and he was good enough that he would have logged significant snaps for US in 2015. I would be surprised if he's not playing a huge amount for us in 16

On talent alone, yeah, him and Shaq Smith both. Problem is, Chad Smith was probably every bit as talented as those two last year, but he ended up redshirting even with our depth problems at LB.

Venables throws a lot - like, a LOT - at his linebackers, and expects a lot in terms of reads, checks, assignments, responsibilities, all that, which can be a lot for a young guy to handle...his guys have to think fast and play faster. He's made no bones he prefers experience to talent and prefers - if given a choice - to bring young players along slowly.

With so many talented young players, and very little veteran depth, that probably won't be an option this year...Venables is almost going to have to throw the youngsters into the chute and let them learn on the fly, but I would still stare hard at the guys who have some time in system as likelier to play the bulk of the snaps. Unless they just learn really fast, Lamar and Shaq Smith will probably get their feet wet this year...but probably won't feature, at least not early.

Am I the only one confused when the name "Smith" is used by itself inside an article with (2)Smiths?
