How much longer will The ######## last in Columbia?

Sep 27, 2012, 9:18 PM

Understanding that more than age (as he is 67 now) plays into the equation, how long will Spurrier hand around no man's land. Even with rosé or garnet colored glasses, they are no more than a contender for second in the east. This basically equates to fourth in the conference with Florida and Tennisuck looking to challenge there before too long.

Will his ego be fed enough by modest success or will failing to return to glory create Deadskin flashbacks? Beating Vandy and Kentucky and going to the Outside bowl can't be te crowning jewel for him but time is limited for climbing the mountain. Les Miles and Satan now own the SUC and neither really is concerned with the past no matter how much the USUC PR machine tries.

Good thing spanking us every year won't be enough to keep em' around.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

OP: He is 4-3 against us. Might wanna zip it!

nm

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But do you judge success by one game a year?

Sep 27, 2012, 10:06 PM

Way too much involved in college athletics today to do that. Super conferences and the BCS have left that train of thought in the past.

4-3 in state gets you nothing other than water cooler bragging rights. It has no influence on reaching the next level. Beetling us will never change not competing overall in their conference bond will it change our conference position. If you have already lost a game prior to the matchup, it is all about over inflated egos anyway.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

no- but he hasn't had to do that

Sep 27, 2012, 10:25 PM

South Carolin won 11 games last year

and is ranked in the top 10 this year - and finisehd last year in the top 10.

Beating Clemson is of course a huge feather in the cap. But right now - like it or not- South Carolina is a dang solid football team and Spurrier is responsible for that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It is the old Trent Dilfer -Dan Marino argument

Sep 27, 2012, 10:54 PM

You want the banners and rings or newspaper clippings? Division-Conference-BCS or sign up for late season Tuesday night games on the deuce.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I want to win more than we lose

and have a solid football program.

It can't all be about championships because the large majority of your seasons are going to be major disappointments.

For me it's simple- Spurrier has done a great job at South Carolina.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I want to win more than we lose

Sep 27, 2012, 11:00 PM

so 1 good but not great year constitutes a good job huh. dabo would have been run out of town on a rail if he had superiors record the first 3 year.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

not sure

Sep 27, 2012, 11:13 PM

Dabo had a losing year his 2nd full season at Clemson something Spurrier hasn't had - and Dabo was retained. So I am not sure that's true.

No rational, reasonable person in the country would disagree that Spurrier has done a fantastic job at South Carolina.

Sep 28, 2012, 1:37 AM [ in reply to no- but he hasn't had to do that ]

I can't stand the OBS with his smug attitude or the trash talking coot fans that have suddenly come out of nowhere.....but they are having the best run in their non-illustrious football history.
This past weekend, (this is hard to say) they actually looked good. I feel like I need a shower after saying that!
Please God...let us make things right in the world again this November! End the madness!

Sep 27, 2012, 10:06 PM [ in reply to Re: How much longer will The ######## last in Columbia? ]

he will go hang out on the beach. Nearly 70 years old and acts like a 6 yr old.
It is way past time to grow up.

Re: If

Sep 27, 2012, 10:31 PM

uh ever heard of phil korncoot or bart wright. puleeeze coach superior is a pompous a$$. guess you coots liked it when he said he would rather be in unc if he knew how the press in columbia would be.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes, but

Sep 27, 2012, 10:42 PM

Bart Wright isn't nearly as bold as Ron Morris has been in his columns over the years.

Phil Kornblut is an entirely different deal. Phil talks on a local south carolina talk show. No one outside of South Carolina pays him any attention.

Ron MOrris gets his columns published in other newspapers in the southeast all the time. That's why Bill King grabs him ever chance he gets and puts him on national radio.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Yes, but

Sep 27, 2012, 10:48 PM

really kind of funny that 8 years ago or so every coot in coot nation knew what most people in america has known for years. that is that coach superior is a self serving a$$hole that is only in this for himself. his only real goal is to be the all time coot coaching winner. and you coots know it deep down also.

Every chicken fan I knew called Spurrier an

Sep 27, 2012, 10:52 PM

ahole for running up the score on them in Fla---a little display of arrogance he did to every team he had the opportunity to---but now, the airwaves, internet message boards, newsprint are just full of the manlove all chickenfans have for the "the great steve"---he can do no wrong!! Ron Morris should be drawn and quartered for questioning "the great steve". He may have absolutely NO allegiance to usuck other than his paycheck, but one does not question "the great steve"

chickenfans are the amongst the worst hypocrites alive

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sure they did- but it was about football and the games

Sep 27, 2012, 11:00 PM

fans say a lot of silly stuff- including Clemson fans.

There is a difference to me in a coach that likes to run the score up and be a butt on the field-

and I have no issue with Ron questioning Spurrier about anything related to the game, or his players, etc..

but when someone tries to make a weak attempt to somehow link your program to a program that let child rape go unpunished - there is a difference in that and running up scores in football games played by college kids

you might not see a difference- but I think the large majority of people do.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Its called integrity.....maybe all those former

Sep 27, 2012, 11:10 PM

stalwart gamecock fans just abandoned their's when that arrogant piece of crap showed up in Columbia.........but, then, you don't want me to mention the lovefest between gamecock fans and Lou Holtz when he first showed up---the "savior" prior even though EVERY college football fan told usuck fans exactly what would happen....and it did.

Whatever, rationalize any way you want....

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Your sort of talking past yourself

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

again, that's sort of an irrelevant point

Sep 27, 2012, 11:26 PM

Cleemson fans hated Brad Scott and called him every name in the book when he was at South Carolina.

A few fans even went to his house and spray painted his driveway with graffiti.

But 2 weeks after he was fired, they were loving him.

That's the way it works.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Brad Scott???

Sep 27, 2012, 11:39 PM

he was an assistant coach....not a head coach. And I don't remember any Clemson fans talking badly about him when he was coaching at usuck.....he'd earned a measure of respect from Tiger fans as an assistant at FlaSt...and I've never heard of anyone vandalizing his driveway....the only vitriol I've EVER heard pointed at Scott was from the same usuck fans who fired him before he was hired at Clemson....listen to the call in shows---your fellow fans still call him "Fat Brad".....
Now, every Clemson fan DID love it when in a measure of extreme disrespect aimed towards usuck players and fans, Scott was carried off the field by Clemson players after one of the numerous defeats dealt the chickens in W-B

Nah....Brad Scott's doing anything to support your "subjective" point of view about the loss of integrity so many long time chickenfans displayed with the worship of Spurrier's nose droppings....their "oohing and aaahing" at every visor slam approaches disgusting.

And, don't forget, Swinney's little rant was in response to what your university was playing as another of Spurrier's arrogant "one liners" (as you described) until the truth emerged that that mentally deficient pbp maron had actually said......

this is boring. You can't offer a reasonable explanation for why those chickens who hated stevie and now worship him other than to say its "subjective", "thats how it goes", the usual gamecock dodging of the obvious truth.

again, whatever. rationalize it all you want. maybe I'll look at it tomorrow. chickentrolls are boring and insignificant on Tigernet.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Sep 27, 2012, 11:19 PM [ in reply to If ]

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"class" is subjective

Sep 27, 2012, 11:23 PM

I thought it was classless that Dabo went off the week after losing to South Carolina last year.

But again, that's my opinion. It's subjective. Clemson fans rightly don't care. They loved it. They couldn't have cared less.

That's the way it works.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It was CLASSLESS that Spurlid let the rumor run

Sep 27, 2012, 11:28 PM

and be attributed to him without refuting it.

Dabo defended his team. He said all the stuff fans have said for years. It might have been a bit over the top, but it was not classless.

I can cite lots of Spurrier classless moments. TOPPING the list is his post game interview a few years ago after beating Kentucky. A reporter asked him how he allowed Kentucky to mount a drive late in the game. He said, he'd like to know that too. So he dragged his Defensive Coordinator out there to answer.

That same weekend, Mark Richt showed true CLASS after losing to Vandy at home (unheard of in UGA history) and he was gracious and gave Vandy all the credit.

I know class and classless when I see it. And I saw it that weekend. SO clear.

my favorite one was after one of their games that the coots

Re: How much the writing is on the wall or State newspaper..

Sep 27, 2012, 11:09 PM

Separation with the media, questioning the fan base, discord within the athletic department (Morris did not dream up the situation with Horn he just shined a light on it) and now he is reporting to the one guy who has done what he can not, bring a national title to Columbia. Add in the NCAA investigation and it adds up.

There is more to the beach comment than people are admitting. After all, he has bolted when things were not like he wanted even when success was possible before.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I believe he will stay at least through next year, providing

Sep 28, 2012, 7:13 AM

the Gamecocks do not win the SEC championship this year. That will be to see if they can do so next year. If not, he may well determine that he has accomplished about all he can...and retire. We have to acknowledge his competiveness...even at his age; thus, I doubt he will hang it up this year without that SEC title.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

His legacy is to be known as the coach that finally...

Sep 28, 2012, 7:14 AM

...destroyed the Chicken Curse, once and for all eternity.

A football program that was beyond salvation, he dropped into cauldron of dismay as the savior or saviors. To do something that no man had EVER done, redeem a program of unredeemables.

He will now stay long enough to prove the Chicken Curse is dead, and that he is indeed the one who buried it.

The elevation of the USCJr program to national prominence will go down in his mind as his greatest coaching accomplishment.

I don't like it, nor do I like SOS, but he has indeed done something that no one thought he could do.

To my dismay, I predict that USCJr will end the season with a major bowl win, finishing the polls at probably 3rd or 4th.

Clemson fans can only hope that SOS believes his USC legacy is secure within the next 3 years, else we're in for long years of considerable misery.

I would support bringing back each year Tommy Bowden to ONLY coach the Clemson game against the chickens.

danger of going anywhere so why would the old ball suck be leaving columbia b/c of anything other than his age?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

As long as they are winning, he will stick around.

Sep 28, 2012, 8:12 AM

He won't retire while they are winning barring a dust up of some kind with the administration or health issues.

It will take a few mediocre or poor seasons before he has had enough.

The good news is, when he leaves, USC will have a hangover effect like we did after Danny left. It is very difficult to replace a "legend"
