How much do you let work bother you when you aren't working?

Apr 4, 2018, 11:53 AM

Since we got bought my mega corp, this ish is getting to me almost daily. I f'ing hate this crap. Its like I'm going backward in my career.

My first inclination is to get the hale out, so I've been sending resumes out and had a few interviews, but nothing yet.

Maybe I should just quit giving a ####. Do you ever let work bother you even when you're not working?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Im sitting in my office not workin right now.

Apr 4, 2018, 11:55 AM

Doesn’t bother me at all. I may watch some Hulu after this post or go get some lunch.

Apr 4, 2018, 12:00 PM

I'm in a bad place in that I do not enjoy what I do and I really don't enjoy who I do it for. We are contractors and there is a great deal uncertainty. I'm also not seeing much I think will be fruitful to apply for. I'm kinda sitting back and waiting on a layoff notice.

The companies we represent have had a couple of good years, so they've gone into "If we build it people have to buy it" mode. Doesn't help a lot of the new hires they've made have zero sales experience, and single handedly kill projects because of their idiocy.

For instance, I had a pretty promising project lined up, straight forward, nothing crazy...easily doable. Decent money for the time involved. Inside sales bisch tells me she'll quote them AFTER the customer gets all competitive quotes in IF they're still interested at that point. Same day I get an email from VP of sales asking me if we've got any new opportunities. Nope, I guess we don't anymore.

what's going on here. It's like a personal affront to her if you ask her to do anything. We had a customer down and she refused to run any tests on the sample materials they provided because they filled a form out wrong.

Another woman at another company decided she didn't like the payment terms that had been set for a decade with a particular customer. She pissed them off so bad about it we've haven't seen another order from them since. She's a fuggin secretary, and got into a squabble with them about it when they sent in a PO. Insanity.

I've encountered some worthless dudes, but none that I can think of who would actively work against you like some of these chicks seem to do.

Yeah, but doesn't make it any easier.

Apr 5, 2018, 10:15 AM [ in reply to But it is yours, right? ]

Doing my "job" lines my pockets. Dealing with ALL of the other stuff (to one extent or another) does not. It's a wash I guess. My HR, tech, tax, accounting, record keeping, office management prowess yields no returns. Doing what I do best does. The less of the above I have to deal with, the more $$$ I can earn. But if you ignore that stuff, it impacts how much I can earn too.

Point is there are benefits to working in a corporate environment, and benefits working for yourself. But working for yourself your work is GUARANTEED to go home with you and be with you all the time. Not so much in a corporate environment. I have dreams about work. And not about porking some coworker, unfortunately. I have done work at all hours of the day. I've worked 80-hour weeks before. I've driven 2,000 miles in a week. I've used 4,000 minutes on my phone in a month. A corporate job like my wife's would seem like a vacation.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-tiggity-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I can see that. I'd hate doing the things that

Apr 5, 2018, 11:48 AM [ in reply to Yeah, but doesn't make it any easier. ]

Thursday, and not go home until Saturday. Straight through, no sleep. I can' count the "40 hour Tuesdays" I've don in datacenters. I used to carry clothes and a tooth brush in my car because I had no idea when I'd be staying for days on end. I remember once driving over the Cooper River Bridge on a beautiful Saturday morning about 10 am, seeing people jogging and walking over the bridge. I had been at work since Wednesday, and I go to thinking "is this normal? Is this what every body does?"

It's not. No matter whether you "own" your own business or not.

I did my own thing for a while once and the biggest PIA I found was billing, and finding the "next gig", but it seems like that what our economy is becoming anyway. We'll all be contractors at some point.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Apr 5, 2018, 10:42 AM

I have not been caught up on work in probably 10 years. I have about 6,000 miles and 2-300 hours of work on my desk right now. I still turn it in around 30 days, which is acceptable since lawyers spend years doing less work on these cases than I do.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-15yr.jpgringofhonor-tiggity-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes... same here.

Apr 5, 2018, 8:50 PM

Just for a shorter period of time. I have turned away more business than accepted. I am starting to hire people but want to do it slow so I can hopefully have better quality control and get used to managing people and getting the work still done... how to delegate, what to delegate, what to teach, what to let them learn on their on... yada yada yada.

And like you said... my work, I like doing and make good money. Its those weeks that you work over 70 hours and only have about 12 billable because you were dealing with tax stuff, new accounting software, benefits, managing resources, buying computers and software... but you have to do all of that to keep making money doing what you do.
