How many of you cared about the names of buildings?

Jun 12, 2020, 3:14 PM

I was a student from 77-81.
I am either lazy or don’t sweat the little things - but not once did I stop and do research on building names at Clemson or any other school I considered going to.
Not once did I walk across campus and think that the name of a building would make me feel bad. Truthfully, I would not care if a building was called Steve spurrier. Odd, but it is just a name. A word. The world is way too sensitive when a word makes you feel bad about yourself (not talking about ones spoken to you.). But even then, most would not bother me or make me react. I have laughed off many words spoken to me by all races.

Tillman, Calhoun - I really don’t care if we change the names. Maybe I don’t stress the little things or maybe I am insensitive and should do better.
I do draw the line on any race or cause adopting a word.
Football Matters worn by a football coach is nothing inappropriate.

I can say, the day they make any effort to change Clemson’s name - is the day I dig in and if they win - I will walk away and my Clemson days will be done. Sports and all.

Just how far will name changing and statue destroying go? I was also at Clemson during the same years and never thought about the people behind the names. I'm sure Clemson as well as other institutions adopted names based on the good a person did and not the bad. As horrible as it was, America was a country of slavery for many years, and the people of that time have their names stamped on buildings and monuments around the country, again, not because they may have owned slaves or harbored a certain attitude towards them, but because of the other positive contributions they made to society. That's how it must be viewed. Our country's history can not be changed. Learn from it and grow, but don't try to paint over it. It's futile. If we start to inspect all the people behind the names of buildings around the country, I'll bet we offend a of people for a lot of different reasons. Thomas Jefferson owned slaves. Will that memorial come down as well?

Changing the name of a building doesn’t rewrite history.***

to buildings based upon their use: the tin cans, the cafeteria, admin building, the field house, etc.

Hence, names never really meant much......and still don't today. Thus, renaming or no-naming is no problem, especially if it promotes unity across the campus.
