I'll spare you the embarrassment of a typical floundering

answer. Musk has donated to the GOP in some form since the Bush-Cheney campaign. Donations to the GOP stepped up in 2020, but he was still donating to a mix of D/R campaigns and committees. He donated exclusively to Republicans (RNC & "WINRED" -- the ActBlue of the Right) last year.
How much did he donate, in total, in 2021?
$2,003 (only half went to RNC directly)
How much is the legal maximum contribution to a party committee?
$36,500.
So in 2021, in which he donated *only* to Republicans, he contributed 3% of what he could have to the RNC.
But what about PAC money, you ask!? Oh, good call!
Elon's donor history includes donations to SPACE EXPLORATION TECHNOLOGIES CORP. PAC.
Unfortunately, this PAC does not quite follow Elon's newfound fidelity to the GOP. Your friend Eric Swalwell got a $2500 check from SETC Pac in March.
What does this tell us?
Maybe Elon will suddenly open his wallet to the GOP in a way he hasn't ever before? Then again, he hasn't donated to the GOP in 2022 according to FEC records, so not looking good. What about (c)4 money that wouldn't show up in the FEC database? Sure! But if he's not donating to campaigns, I highly, highly doubt he's channeling dark money anywhere.
Big? Potentially, but highly unlikely. He won't be the next Soros. He won't be the next Wynn. He'll be one "celebrity" on the Right for which the Left has basically all of Hollywood.
You're welcome for this dose of reality, no matter how badly it may be taken, Mr. Brooks.

I don't think "big" necessarily equates to financial as much as the publicity that will be generated.
"...But they have become the party of division & hate..."
History shows, a rich business name who isn't considered a politician can make waves...I don't think Musk has any political ambitions, but people will listen to what he has to say...and he can certainly draw a crowd if he wants one.

difference whatsoever in national contests. Taylor Swift coming out as a Democrat was supposed to be a "big deal" given her fan base of young potential voters, but who looks at Swift today as some sort of Leftist icon or luminary?

So let's break this down.

He's not going to be stumping for Republicans. His endorsements are rare, and here, he's endorsing the Democrat. He has yet to donate to the RNC or any Republican since his announcement (according to FEC data). And he's tweeted multiple times since then about his moderate positions (so, far from MAGA, DeSantis, etc.)
