It made the point that white southerners, for the most part, do not consider the flag a symbol of support of slavery. You understand that, right?

Actually, we opened fire on Ft. Sumter April 12, 1861. Not sure why they would have celebrated the 100th anniversary (in SC)in 1962. But I agree with your original sentiment. My understanding was that it was put on the Capital because of SC's resistance to Integration and the Civil Rights Movement (Strom and the Dixiecrats).

I always thought it interesting that Strom was so anti-integration when he himself had a black daughter. Politicians, you can't live with them and you can't cut them into little pieces and mail them to the South Pole.

Re: I don't care if I ever see another Rebel Flag

Jun 21, 2015, 10:12 PM [ in reply to Re: I don't care if I ever see another Rebel Flag ]

I could not care less where the flag is, but....

Confederate Navy Jack: Used as a navy jack at sea from 1863 onward. This flag has become the generally recognized symbol of the South.

It is necessary to disclaim any connection of the flag to neo-nazis, red-necks, skin-heads and the like. These groups have adopted this flag and desecrated it by their acts. They have no right to use this flag - it is a flag of honor, designed by the confederacy as a banner representing state's rights and still revered by the South. In fact, under attack, it still flies at the South Carolina capitol building. The South denies any relation to these hate groups and denies them the right to use the flags of the confederacy for any purpose. The crimes committed by these groups under the stolen banner of the confederacy only exacerbate the lies which link the secession to slavery interests when, from a Southerner's view, the cause was state's rights.

My question is..if it is taken down, do the hate groups win because they stole the flag? And also, the American flag has 13 stripes to recognize the 13 original colonies. Most of the colonies fought under the Confederate flag. Should the 13 stripes be taken off of the American flag and 13 stars removed?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

> directly caused the shooting in Charleston? Thanks

It didn't, any more than the American flag caused the attack on the world trade center. The American flag stands for freedom and democracy and all that is good about America. The confederate flag was allowed by "honorable" southerners to be adopted by the KKK, white supremacists and even the Nazi party that had a rally on the SC State house steps to congratulate SC for "it's courage in flying the confederate flag.

Where the flag once stood for heritage, good southerners allowed it's worst elements to steal the flag and fly it in the name of prejudice, hatred, anti-civil rights and racism.

The confederate flag didn't cause the attacks in Charleston. But the culture that supports it most certainly did. You'll notice that all those photos of Roof with the confederate flag aren't selfies.

IMHO

Jun 22, 2015, 1:16 PM

Being a symbol of the Confederacy isn't much/any better than the symbol of hatred that it has become in the hands of certain groups today. After all, Confederate VP Alexander Stephens had this to say in his famous Cornerstone Speech:

"Our new Government is founded upon exactly the opposite ideas; its foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery, subordination to the superior race, is his natural and moral condition."

It is part of our history and as such deserves to be preserved in museums, but there's no place for it at the state house.
