How does Clemson get more butts in the seats at bball games?

Feb 6, 2014, 12:07 PM

I think we need to talk about the attendance problem at Littlejohn. I understand that a couple of bad seasons have distracted people from basketball, but the "we'll show up when they show up" excuse doesn't apply to this team. They're finally not just competing with other ACC teams, they're showing up expecting to beat teams like Wake, GT, FSU, Miami, NC State, VT, and BC and thinking they've got a chance against the Dukes, UNCs, Syracuses and Pitts of the world.

So why didn't the fans even half fill Littlejohn for a conference game against a pretty good Georgia Tech team? Why couldn't they come out to support the team when this is the only home game for something like 21 days? The team obviously feeds off of the crowd, as we saw in the game against Duke. So why not get out there and help them win?

I think thats on the students.

Feb 6, 2014, 12:13 PM

As Clemson has become more Academically selective, its graduates have moved far from the upstate and indeed far from SC. Mid-week travel to the John is thus difficult.

Similarly, Clemson has moved away from on campus housing that was the norm when the John was built. Students living in Central (UV etc...) simply won't drive to campus again at night during the week - especially when not inspired to do so.

Re: I think thats on the students.

Wining can help, but there's also an economic component to this issue IMO.

People need to have a reason to spend their hard earned money to go to a Clemson basketball game. (or any athletic event for that matter)

In today's world of mass communications, it's easier and less expensive to watch the game on a TV or a computer.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Doesn't excuse the students who get in for free

Feb 6, 2014, 12:22 PM

You don't even have to stand in line for bball games, either, students. A lot of us wish we could still just walk up to the ticket table, show our ID, and get into Littlejohn.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

you can't anymore

Feb 6, 2014, 12:23 PM

new system sucks

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That was gonna be my question, what ticket system do they

Feb 6, 2014, 12:32 PM

have now? My freshman year 07/08 you could walk up and get tickets. Then in 08/09 they started trying to tweak it after some parents complained about a couple students getting sick from camping out for games cause the bball popularity was sky high.

Then they tweaked it again 09/10 and it just got stupid and student attendence went way down again.

IMO it should be first come first serve cause those people are gonna be the ones you want closest to the court

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Whatever you do, always give 100%.....unless it's donating blood

The current student ticket distribution system is AWFUL

Feb 6, 2014, 12:20 PM [ in reply to I think thats on the students. ]

I graduated last May....my first 2 years, any student could simply walk up and get a ticket starting an hour before tip-off. First come, first serve

Starting my junior year, they started a new policy that involves having to register for a ticket online a week or so before the game. Sounds simple enough, but it really is confusing and causes students to miss games. The deadlines to register aren't promoted, and if you don't register in advance, you can't just walk up and attend like you once could.

I feel like, for the majority of the students, the basketball games are more of a spur of the moment decision....like "oh look, there's a game tomorrow/tonight. Let's go!" Not anymore.

The old way was much better....the students who really cared about the games could line up early and get a front row ticket. Furthermore, any ol student could decide that they had nothing else to do, and could walk right over to LJ and be fine to get in.

They need to switch back to the old way if they want students to come out in full force

You graduated last May, this is a new year and they actually

Feb 6, 2014, 12:24 PM

did revert to the old system.

First come first serve. Doors open about an hour before game time.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Didn't know that...but good!

Feb 6, 2014, 12:28 PM

Too bad they lost students' interest with the old system

No excuses tho.....bad system or not, I was at EVERY home game that wasn't over the holiday break

Re: Didn't know that...but good!

Feb 6, 2014, 2:04 PM

I think this was the biggest problem. The change in ticketing combined with the dip in performance of the basketball team really hurt student interest. When I was a student camping out was 1/2 of the fun of attending the games. We not only camped for the big games but every game just to get front row seats. I was not around for the implementation of the new ticket policy but could tell early it was going to go poorly when talks started. When you live off campus it is much more convenient to go get in line when you get out of class. Instead students started going home because they couldn't wait in line and then ended up not coming back. Added to that the struggles of the basketball team and many felt it wasn't worth it to drive all the way back for 2hrs. They did the right thing by going back to the old way but it is going to take a while, and some winning, for students to adjust.

my guess

Feb 6, 2014, 12:17 PM

The bb is just boring. Scoring 50 pts does not make for good entertainment. Time plus money plus 50 pts per game is not a good combination.

Feb 6, 2014, 12:18 PM

I need to practice by playing video games and trolling the internet and can't be bothered with attending "basketball" or whatever they call it these days. Plus, my frat had a mixer with the local nursing home to night before and I was still recovering from a long night of drinking grape juice with Berniece and getting my freak on.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Who's scheduling this greek stuff?

Feb 6, 2014, 12:20 PM

Frat dudes, step up and stop letting the sorority girls who have no idea what's going on schedule stuff during big sporting events.

Sorority Girls ...pssh

Feb 6, 2014, 12:28 PM [ in reply to Who's scheduling this greek stuff? ]

They have expectations. The nursing home ladies are desperate. Tuesday night is lasagna night, so it's a prime night for a mixer. They don't call them "The Greatest Generation" for nothing.

Re: How does Clemson get more butts in the seats at bball games?

Feb 6, 2014, 12:18 PM

For games against ACC teams on a weekend the John can get pretty full. The main thing is that the area Clemson is in means that most folks have to travel a decent amount to get to the game, and pair that with a late night game on a Tuesday and a lot of people who would normally go would rather keep the kids home and watch on tv...

I think if the team becomes ranked though, then you could see a decent pickup simply due to the interest it would create

Feb 6, 2014, 12:25 PM

win an expectation of being able to win big games. Not a team like we typically see who collapses when pressured and can't score more than 50 points a game.

If our football program was the equivalent of our basketball program DV would be half-empty in the fall.

People are tired of wishing and hoping that Clemson basketball will ever amount to anything. If/win it ever does, the coach moves on or the good player(s) leaves or graduates then it's back to normal.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Umm... we're tied for third in the ACC

Feb 6, 2014, 12:28 PM

We beat Duke a few weeks ago, and we just came off a big road win against FSU. This was our only home game for something like 3 weeks.

I swear, some of you people would complain if we won every game scoring 60 points.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If we don't score 100 points a game what's the point

Feb 6, 2014, 12:30 PM

We should do what that DIII school team that does nothing but foul on defense and shoot 3's on offense. They score a bunch of points. They don't "win" or actually play "offense" but they score, and that's what really matters. Heck they had a player set the NCAA scoring record. Now, I know, I know, he rarely crossed over half court when the team was on "defense" but he scored, and that's what matters.

...and every student I knew still attended every game. Thankfully the basketball team during Rick Barnes was an exciting product with 'us against the world' mentality.

I don't understand why students would pass up free sporting events to football, basketball or baseball. Perhaps basketball has just declined in popularity (like soccer). It'a a great break from studies and not a far walk for on-campus students.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

the main problem is not too many people live close enough

We play boring basketball right now. Pretty much nobody that isn't affiliated with either CU or the team that we are playing is going to watch our teams, and I'm sure the games in the 40s-50s keep away Tiger fans as well.

Also, it takes a little more than 1/2 or 2/3 of a decent season to get our fans to really attend games. It took quite awhile for support to gather for the OP teams as well.

Re: How does Clemson get more butts in the seats at bball games?

Feb 6, 2014, 9:45 PM

It's easy to make excuses if you are really going to go only to watch when NC and Duke or in town or when we are recognizing the football team. Somehow, for those games, professors must not give exams that week, the distance people live away from Littlejohn is not as far etc. The fact is there are more students living on campus than ever and more alumni live within an hour of Clemson than ever.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Attending basketball games is about like going to church:

Feb 7, 2014, 6:52 AM

the day has to be set aside for attending services; the sanctuary has to be inviting; and the preacher has to plan a heck of a service along with a potent sermon to draw the crowds and get them clapping and shouting "Yes, Lord."

Then, when the service is over, folks have to be able to leave feeling they got their money's worth, are a step closer to the Promised Land with a return trip all but guaranteeing that St. Peter will be waiting at the Pearly Gates with an entry ticket to life eternal among the elite!

Of course, all that begs the questions: is the preacher capable enough to accomplish the above, and does he have the assistants capable of helping him attract the masses?
