How did Tennessee get so good in baseball so fast?

Apr 22, 2022, 3:53 PM

They averaged 27 wins a season the last 3 years of their previous coach, and now their new coach has won 40 in ‘19 50 in ‘21 and is 34-3 this year. I don’t think they have endowments like Vandy and the in state talent in TN isn’t better than SC. I guess it’s just the right coach at the right time.

Coaching is overrated. It’s all about facilities and fan support.

They've got themselves a pretty good head coach in Tony Vitello and their facilities are good with Lindsey Nelson Stadium...https://utsports.com/sports/baseball/roster/coaches/tony-vitello/819

There are few D1 caliber baseball players in the nation

that wouldn't want to play for Vitello. He is Daboesque with culture, fun, passion, work hard, celebrate. He is a circle the wagons, us against the world guy with a smile but will compete like a killer. Those kids buy in.

Agree with both you and HORRY. They've recruited at an exceptional rate... And the kids that could have gone MLB didn't. That's coaching.

Tennessee knows what they have in their coach, too. That is

why he is now being paid $1.5 MILLION bucks a year.

In the grand scheme of things, the SEC is just literally having to FIND ways to spend all the "extra" millions they get every year from THEIR TV contract.

The difference in pay between Tennessee's Head Baseball Coach and Clemson's is for sure significant. But, not a hardship for Tennessee to come up with that money, and then some.

But, as has been shown in football by them in recent times, excellence in FOOTBALL is apparently much tougher to buy than excellence in BASEBALL.

Well...they recently got a QB for $8M. They say never assume, but I just did.
