How Clemson stands over the last ten years.....

Jul 4, 2017, 7:20 AM

Ranking the ACC (plus 1) over the past 10 years, based on won/loss records:

1. Clemson.......101-35.....(.74265)
2. FSU............94-33.....(.74016)
3. Va Tech........92-43.....(.68148)

4. Louisville.....78-49.....(.61417)
5. SC.............78-51.....(.60465)
6. GT.............78-54.....(.59091)
7. ND.............75-52.....(.59055)
8. Miami..........73-54.....(.57480)
9. Pitt...........73-56.....(.56589)

10.NC.............69-54.....(.52212)
11.NCSU...........65-62.....(.51181)
12.BC.............65-64.....(.50388)

13.WF.............53-71.....(.42742)
14.Duke...........53-72.....(.42400)
15.Syracuse.......48-75.....(.39024)
16.VA.............46-76.....(.37705)

The record shows some clear distance between the first tier and everyone else. And it shows some clear distance between the bottom rung and everyone else. It's interesting to me to see the actual ten year records and to think about the ranking and W/L records of our regular opponents.

It's also interesting to me that nationally only Alabama and Ohio State have won more games than Clemson over the past 4 years.

We've all been on one HECK of a roll the last decade. Looking even further back......

Since 1981 our Tigers have won more ball games than Alabama, LSU, Auburn, Tenn, Texas, So Cal, and ND. Aside from Tiger fans, not too many people really understand how often our Tigers win. Also since 1980 our Tigers have won more consensus National Titles than historically bigger named and self-importantly cocky ND, Michigan, Tenn, Texas, Auburn, and Georgia.

"Clemson ing?" Are you kidding me?

Life has been very good for Clemson Football Fans.

Go Tigers!!

I became a fan in the mid 80s. I knew Clemson could be a powerhouse and I have always expected us to be. We are set up better than anyone in the ACC with FSU being right there with us. The two decades of mediocrity we had to endure is mind boggling to me. Even with it I knew we were still among the best overall during that period from 1980-present. I'm not surprised that we have the best winning % in the ACC the last ten years. Thanks for sharing.

Thankfully, Terry Don Phillips finally got rid of Bowden

Jul 4, 2017, 9:09 AM

and hired Dabo ... and Dabo was smart and humble enough to spend a lot of $$$ on coordinators.

Otherwise, these numbers would be a lot, lot worse.

I am still upset about traveling to Wake Forest and watching the Deacons drub the Tigers ...

45-0 in 3rd quarter, and Bowden lines up for a long field goal. Being taunted by Wake fans is something I do not wish on my worst enemies.

That was awful. Tommy was on his way out and then that team started playing like they were the best in the country by dominating FSU, Tenn and SC. Best team during those 2 decades of mediocrity. I had a glimmer of hope for Tommy after that season only to have my heart ripped out the next year. Why did we waste 10yrs on a bad coach? Glad things have turned out the way they did though. Without Bowden there would be no Dabo.

> Man, us Clemson fans are spoiled.

There is a reason Tommy Bowden has not worked as a coach since leaving Clemson. He even tried to get in at South Alabama when they started their football program...and they spurned him.

The consensus among the coaching community is that Tommy Bowden was a weak coach who lived mostly off his name and did less with more. Consistently fielding 7/8-win teams at Clemson isn't much more forgivable than doing it at a place like Georgia, Tennessee, or Alabama, especially since he was doing it in an era when the ACC was way down from where it is now.

The historical judgment - from outside Clemson, anyhow - is that Tommy Bowden was a below-average coach. I personally agree with that judgment, and I think he was one of those guys who had just enough positive attributes to save his job, and was mostly just good enough to get his team beat against anyone with a pulse except for those rare occasions when Clemson would get it together almost despite him and rise up. But for the most part there was this smug complacency to the Bowden regime, and he was consistently railing against the Clemson fan base to accept less rather than figuring out how he himself could generate more.

Yes, it's the vacated games for FSU.

Hey, you cheat....there is a penalty.

I think that hit the nail on the head. I remember early in his tenure on his Sunday show after a loss he was talking about the team and referenced "them" and "they". I'm thinking, this guy is not attached to his team or to Clemson, for that matter. He was over a year into his tenure, I got news for him..... it's officially "we" at that point.

Let's just say, Tommy Bowden is not the man I want to share a foxhole with in battle. Give me Dabo anytime.

Spot on. I get why someone would want to defend him but at the end of the day he was a bad coach. Mediocrity at a place like Clemson is inexcusable. We are one of the big fish in a small pond in the ACC. Championships and double digit win seasons should be the norm here just like at FSU. I became a fan in an era when it was the norm. Guess I could never adjust my expectations to Bowden's performance.

Man, I got so tired of the "turn the corner" talk during Bowden's tenure. There were times when a Bowden team would have a big win and everyone would say we've turned the corner, and then they would relax and lose to a team like Duke. Bowden himself talked about it that way.

I'm so glad Swinney never thinks of things that way. There is no magical corner. It's about preparation each and every week. That's ine of the biggest differences Swinney has brought.

I get what you're saying. In my mind an the way I remember things his teams consistently underachieved. Too much talent on some of those teams for no more wins than they had. But to me the worst part about Tommy was his sideline demeanor. He almost always looked like he didn't care or he was about to cry. He seemed indifferent to losing and his teams seemed to take on his persona.

Nice post. Pretty impressive indeed. The only thing I'd disagree with is including Louisville and ND. Louisville has only been in the ACC for a few years and played in a horrendous conference prior to that, so actually their record is much worse than it even looks. And ND is a different situation because they aren't in the ACC but do play a handfull of ACC teams (5) per year. Also, if I were going to include them, I'd put them in the top teir. They play a much different and much more difficult schedule than any other ACC school every year so their overall W/L record is pretty dang good.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

But if you convert scar's $EC record over to an ACC record...

Jul 4, 2017, 10:45 PM

They would really be 127-2 with only 2 1-pt losses to Bammer in the playoffs.

Right, coots?

I love all 54 years I've been a Clemson Tiger FB fan. If I could go back to the first Tiger FB game I went to and pick another team, I would still be a Clemson Tiger today, no regrets!!!
