Don’t Overlook FSU

Sep 9, 2021, 6:35 AM

They may present more of a challenge than in years past. They have always had talent but the coaching has not been there lately, that looks to have changed.

Probably need to see it in more than one game

Sep 9, 2021, 6:49 AM

before anyone pronounces them “back”. ND was up 18 in the 4th before they took their foot off the gas.

If the game ends 38-20, are we still having the same thoughts about FSU? Credit to them for not giving up like they would have in years past but if you watched that game ND went ultra conservative and it let FSU back in the game.

heres the thing..if our output is ever what it was last Sat

Sep 9, 2021, 8:40 AM

-urday...then we are game to lose to ANYbody. So yes FSU, NCSU, even Pitt can have a game and beat us. WE should a lack of "punch-back" power which is never good to see. The fact that we didn't change anything as far as offensive tactics is what i was most alarmed by. we just kept doing what we did which was a 4/5 second pocket passing attack. which UGA was surprised we kept doing and they teed off on us. WE had one drive where we went up-tempo and we drove it down the field for our only score of the game. We are lost offensively. No we won't look that way on Saturday against SCSTate but it will eventually jump back up to bite us, i'm afraid.

I agree the offensive playcalling was pretty troubling

Sep 9, 2021, 9:21 AM

However, there is nobody else on our schedule that has the manpower in the front 7 to be as disruptive as UGA nor the secondary to mainly lock down our receivers.

Combine that with giving the OL a little more time to gel, and the sky isn't falling.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree. i just hope the next time we get smacked in the

Sep 9, 2021, 11:01 AM

mouth early we won't go into shell shock like we did offensively against UGA. 1st and Goal on the 5 and we throw 3 straight pass plays with no real design to them other than two outs and two crossers. That was a pretty lackluster effort as far as playcalling goes.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hopefully this was a wake-up call for TE

Sep 9, 2021, 11:43 AM

I believe the OL will look a good bit better as the season progresses. Partly because of some inexperienced guys getting more reps, but also because they won't be trying to block Georgia's DL and LB's.

That being said, the entire offense looks to have some foundational cracks. There is very little pre-snap motion to help your young QB better identify coverages, most of the routes appeared to be taking too long to set up, and most importantly the complete abandonment of the run game.

That few carries in a one score game is unacceptable and even more so, the lack of creativity in trying to move the ball on the ground was pretty jarring. I'm not one out here calling for TE's head but I do think the offense has become stale and you've seen teams have an easier time figuring it out.

Are we playing them this weekend ?I thought we were playing the Bulldogs. No, not those Bulldogs.
I say this because I know our coaching staff is not preparing this week for FSU, especially after last weekend stellar performance against the Bulldogs ,no ,not the same Bulldogs we are facing Saturday.
Man, am I confused.

Milton?

Sep 9, 2021, 6:51 AM

It will be interesting to see if they go with Milton at QB moving forward. They seemed like a totally different offense with him behind me center.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

theres no doubt about it. They will .***

Maybe a decent game against them in DV this year.***

How do you keep Gamecocks out of your yard?

They are better, but anybody close to the FSU program would admit they are still far from where they want to be. Their OLine has been a complete disaster for the past for five years. They’ve improved the OL in a couple spots, and that’s a great start, but no wholesale improvement. The good news for us is their schedule is pretty modest between now and our game, so they could be a one loss team coming to death Valley.

Re: Don’t Overlook FSU

As a Nole, I appreciate the kind words.

Too early to tell after only one game, but I doubt we are as far along as you think.

Here is where Norvell has the team going in the right direction:

1. Attitude. The guys seem to have bought into him. They believe in him. They didn't quit. They looked adversity in the face and fought back. That is a huge improvement over the past 4 years, maybe 5.

2. Fundamentally sound. Under Taggart we were notorious for 12 men on the field, 10 men on the field, 5 lined up in the backfield, 2 men in motion, looking to the sideline for the defensive call while the ball was being snapped, jumping off sides, offensive linemen moving before ball was snapped, etc. At least the guys seem to know what they are doing on the field.

3. Athletically, we aren't there yet. We are better than last year at every position group, but that mean we are good at every position group. OL was the worst in FBS last year. Not hard to improve on that. WR corp is young and not talented. Don't have anyone in that group who will be 2nd team ACC. Linebackers are the weakest position group on defense.

4. Everybody is excited about the amazing story of McKenzie Milton, but he's not gonna lead us to a New Year's 6 bowl. Our "QB of the future" is A.J. Duffy who is a senior in HS this year.

We may have improved enough not to get embarrassed this year by the better teams on our schedule (Florida and Clemson) but probably not enough to have the game in doubt after 3 quarters. By the time we play y'all Venables will have plenty of tape on our offense.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not trying to poor mouth us. I am very optimistic that Norvell is the guy who will bring us back. I'm expecting 7 wins this year, and after last week, 8 is a reasonable hope. (Before the season started I was thinking 6-6 would be a good season.)

Long way to go. But, we are headed in the right direction. Perfection is the goal. Direction is the test.

FSU is much improved and they can obviously get up for a big opponent. Plus, they learned their back up QB is very good and will be using him more.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Funny thing. Clemson loses a game and the world as we know

Sep 9, 2021, 7:42 AM

it is ending. FSU comes back and loses a close game and Clemson better watch out. One game in the season and people are in panic mode.

Re: Don’t Overlook FSU

Sep 9, 2021, 7:56 AM

We better hope they're good and possibly finish 8-4. But more importantly come in at 6-1 and ranked. It's the one team in the ACC that would be considered a quality win.

2024 orange level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Norte Dame and everyone else overlooked FSU.

Sep 9, 2021, 9:06 AM

Now that the film is out for FSU they’ll drop five or six games.
