Hood Post / ACC / Play Call Conservatism

Nov 27, 2022, 2:30 PM

David graciously offered up a Q&A video stream last night after a long day. He allowed primarily frustrated Tiger fans an opportunity to vent and ask him program questions. Highly recommended if you have not viewed yet.

I bring David's post up because of his knowledge of the program and his sincere facts-based approach to covering the Tigers. One of David's thoughts on the state of the program resonated strongly with me. His premise is that after the big 1/07/2019 44-16 win over Bama and TL16's graduation two years later, Dabo correctly determined that an extremely conservative approach on Offense and Special Teams would win the ACC year after year. Lots of runs up the middle, outside passes, fair catches, and yes, bubble screens. This level of effort, with the superior talent level of Clemson recruits, would break down the rest of ACC teams over the course of each game, and week after week, would result in Clemson pulling away in the 2nd half for wins culminating in an ACC championship. This approach focused on not taking risks and not making mistakes.

The approach worked. We win we dance. Lots of ACC wins. Lots of dancing. The Achilles' Heel of this sometimes passionless approach occurs when Clemson plays a higher quality fired-up team that is not intimidated by the Tigers. The conservatism, and the Clemson coaches need to initiate some new wrinkles on Offense and Special Teams, takes the players out of their "no risk" comfort zones. Pressure is felt. Miscues and turnovers result. Shifting into a seldom used or needed gear results in player confusion, lost confidence, and mistakes. Anyway, props to David for his analysis. I see some "there" there.

Interesting, and I suspected such. You know what else causes teams to be worn down? When we punch the gas, score a couple times quickly, and they know they can’t keep up. It’s what we did and it’s what UT has done this year.

However, conservative play calling is not what got us here and won’t take us there again. Change or become irrelevant.

Should also be noted that while doing so we were able to play 85 guys on any given Saturday. That ability has evaporated and with it game experience non critical situations.

An excellent point.

funny how he's not called a "coot" for that analysis.....

yet others have been the last few years for giving similar/same analysis.

Kudos to David for finally calling it out...........let's hope some of the other Clemson radio hosts catch on as well.
