Honest question because I genuinely don't know...

...but what happens, if, say, Trump is convicted in either Manhattan or Fulton County or both, but somewhere in there, the economy completely tanks and Biden turns into the second coming of Jimmy Carter and Trump wins both the nomination and the election but is still out on appeal...and then loses that?
This is not an entirely hypothetical scenario. It's definitely within the realm of possibility.
Leaving the issue of self-pardoning aside (which I suspect even a highly conservative Supreme Court would not support), those are state courts...over which Trump has no jurisdiction and as such can't even try to self-pardon. And good luck trying to get a New York governor to issue a state-level pardon, and I suspect Brian Kemp in Georgia wouldn't either. Trump and Kemp are not exactly boys.
So...what happens then? Can a standing president go to prison? I genuinely have no idea.

This is why as much as I’d like to see Trump get elected just to give the finger to all the TDS hacks in here and across the country, I have preferred and still prefer DeSantis who doesn’t have all the baggage.
I like a lot of what you have to say. But this is disappointing. TDS in 2023 seems, to me, to be the people who don't care in the least what Trump did or didn't do. He shouldn't ever face scrutiny.
Don't get me wrong, that the New York charge will be a tax-related beef related to Stormy Daniels is kind of wacky - but it is no more wacky than the attempts to impeach Bill Clinton on a BJ.
(And next will be charges on his blatant attempt to get Georgia officials to manufacturer election fraud on his behalf.)
I genuinely can't grasp that people would set aside concerns about someone attempting to usurp the clear results of a free and fair election. How can someone in high office do anything worse than that?
(Off topic, but I addressed your NYC question on the other thread - but you may not have seen it because I didn't tag you.)

Well I think this is a great question! And it equally applies to Democrats and Republicans. People were complaining about political parties giving more weight to "super-delegates" which basically meant "giving more weight to office holders, long-term party supporters, and people who support candidates of the party."
Okay, now we have a system where fly-by-nights have just as much (short-term) influence on a party as the people who have been party loyalists and participants for years.
How do you get a reality television star nominated to be President? That's how!
So to answer your question... if you don't have the people who are long-term stakeholders having the most influence in the nomination process, you may well have a GOP nominee who faces criminal charges.
Give me the smoke-filled rooms any day.

Kind of seems like the 80 year old New York trust fund baby atheist with multiple wives and decades of preying on people with sham businesses reality TV b-lister now indicted on crimes involved with paying off a hooker who added trillions to the national debt while president and made an as>s of himself on a daily basis and was impeached twice and fomented a two-month long objectively most insane event in US politics since the civil war campaign to overturn an election he lost and spends all his time now having dinner with Kanye West and recording songs with choirs of people in jail for storming the US Capitol building and telling all of his whack job conspiracy obsessed followers how he “is their vengeance” should maybe just be excluded from being a part of politics and elections moving forward.
