Honest question: Should fans lower their expectations?

Dec 31, 2022, 10:55 AM

I know coaches make half a million plus per year, some a million plus. However, questioning their decisions seems to accomplish nothing except make them angry and resentful. It is like if I am not doing my job they can hire someone else. I understand that a lot of fans give monetary support to schools. I also know that football is not that complicated deal. It is not like electrical engineering and some of the sciences. And I know fans have spent hundreds of hours even thousand of hours observing football and therefore have a pretty good idea how things work. But, would it be best for all concerned if fans simply lowered their expectations?

Would it not be better for all concerned if fans just lowered expectations and stop questioning decisions in order to lower tensions. It seems like coaches would prefer for fans to cheer support donate and leave all football matters to them. Do we accomplish anything constructive by questioning and complaining? I'm just throwing this out and would like a response. I appreciate tigernet for providing a forum for fans to express their opinions. Admittedly myself, I would find it difficult to lower my expectations and to stop pointing out things that I believe need attention.

Lower expectations does not equal top tier HC

Dec 31, 2022, 10:57 AM

Pay. Dude has a +110 million deal. Period.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No, coaches should raise theirs...

Dec 31, 2022, 10:58 AM

Starting with Dabo.

Since Dabo’s agent keeps his salary right up their with the blue bloods, Dabo needs to field a blue blood team. If Dabo wants to follow his personal convictions and focus on other aspects of coaching the players then fine. State it to the fans and cut his salary. Clemson could not field a better group of young men. I am so proud of their character. The problem is the Clemson boosters are currently paying blue blood money to field a team. Are fielding a team with character and playing as a blue blood mutually exclusive events? Time will tell. I will say that this is a very expensive experiment that Clemson is currently conducting.

Salary

Dec 31, 2022, 1:46 PM

I am not blaming him for accepting the salary. Dabo needs to realize that there are expectations attached to that salary. Clemson is now two years out of the playoff. This is a critical time for Dabo. I am pulling for him.

We have been told we are built on best is the standard. We have also been told the best is yet to come after winning two nattys. It was not the fans that said that, it was Dabo. Just wanting him to let us know which it is.

Good post. Good for all fans to think about this for themselves. Personally, I'm not expecting Clemson football to have another 6 year run like we did from 2015-2020. Very few schools ever experience that. Was amazing. I still think we can be very good and a great program. Probably won’t have the relative level of talent on the field (and depth) like we had during that period though, for many reasons, portal, NIL, different expectations of today’s players and how that conflicts with Dabo’s view of college football, approach to the program, etc.

Where I won’t lower my expectations is with things I believe the coaches can control. The coaches are the adults here. I do expect them to change and improve as the game and opponents change and improve. Hiring, recruiting, week to week prep, in-game play calling, adapting to the college football game as it is today. From the macro to micro, I feel like Clemson has been slow to change over the past 4 years, while college football changed a ton over the past 4-5 years, and we keep trying to do too much of the same thing that got us to the top. That rarely works- all of what got you to the top is what keeps you on top. It needs to be an ever evolving mix of foundation and change. See Alabama for several examples of this. For years Saban won with mediocre game manager QBs. He’s moved off from that permanently and from Hurts, Tua, Jones and Young, he has NFL QBs.

I love our program and appreciate the core values Dabo has built. I believe there is a path forward for Clemson that doesn’t completely sacrifice everything Dabo holds dear. I just think the path back to elite program status is going to require him to do more things differently than he is now and will likely be a bit uncomfortable to get there. Very few meaningful changes in life are easy and pain free. Hope he’s able to make the meaningful changes that are needed sooner rather than later. Go Tigers!

I think it would be better for their mental health if fans made peace with winning the ACC and going to a mid tier bowl becoming the new definition of a successful season because that's about our best case scenario moving forward.

I agree. Lower your expectations. I reduced my IPTAY contribution and dropped my season tickets. Have a Senior at UGA and two more will be freshman next year. Look forward to 5 years of watching real big boy football in Athens. I will head over to Littlejohn this winter and Kingsmore this spring to support our tigers.

I think the coaches we have and teams we are fielding are doing that for us. Not elite and best isn’t our standard. Decent. Above average. Pretty good.

Connelly, is spot on that people have lowered their expectations. Maybe the question is should that have been necessary.

I would think the answer is yes to some extent. Playoffs and National Championships every year just isn't realistic though we were accustomed to it for several years. If they should be lowered, then where to?

I would say not as low as the man that told us "Best is the Standard" wants them lowered to. We have been told the last couple of years that we should be satisfied with 10 or 11 win seasons and that is horse hockey. We should be fielding team that are competing to be in the CFP every year. It looked that way this year for a while but, when as many teams falter as we saw this year then we should be playing tonight, not last night.

It seems to me that Dabo does not want the expectations that he set anymore. The future of the program depends on where he sets his expectations. If he decides that a 3 loss season is satisfactory then we will fade back into mediocrity for a school that puts this much emphasis on football. If he rekindles that fire then maybe we reach some of the expectations that we have had recently.

Expectations should not be lowered. It does not matter what the endeavor is, lowered expectations leads to lowered results.

No, we need to raise our expectations and bring some heat. Even Dabo needs a wake-up call and someone to kick him in the butt from time to time. This handling him with kid gloves is not working anymore.

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It’s real simple

Dec 31, 2022, 2:26 PM

Dabo (and Clemson) will get the message if there is no money in the coffers to pay his and his staff’s salaries. Therefore, stop your iptay contributions asap and if you don’t contribute (shame on you) promise to contribute to your iptay rep if changes are made. All it would take for change to occur is 10% of the fan base to participate.

Good, very good at times but no longer great ...

Dec 31, 2022, 5:03 PM

might be a fair new mantra. And a second mantra ... REMEMBER Dabo has won two natl championships and earns $12M plus per year so your coaching opinions and critiques are not needed or appreciated.

when Dabo lowers his salary.

Until then,

Just win, baby.
