Honest assessment of the baseball team this year

Jun 4, 2018, 8:05 AM

Wilkie was our most consistent hitter. Not a power guy but definitely made contact especially when it matters.

The pitching staff didn’t look good this weekend but overall had a very good year... much better then anyone of us thought they would considering we lost so much from the previous season.

Beer is rare talent and I wish him the best, but imo, he never seemed to get hits or make an impact when things mattered. He always seemed to hit homers when we were up 7-1 or down 7-1.... when it came to making a hit when it mattered... he wasn’t producing. I know that might make some of you mad... but it’s true.

The team was tight this weekend.... you could see it and feel it. Monte has to win a regional for us to move forward... bottom line.

Honestly, I think we’re going to be really really good next season... but if we go 56-0 and lose another regional.... the year again will be a failure. Here at Clemson Baseball MATTERS....

Good team. Not great. Not close to Vandy. Painful to admit but we get way too hyped early to mid season here. And then we expect things from them that we just dont have the talent to deliver. We leave way too many runners stranded but I'm sure that is just because I remember ours more than opponents

The thing about Vandy is im not so sure

Jun 4, 2018, 8:21 AM

they were even going to make the tournament until they swept Kentucky to end the season. That was just a young, average Vandy team. They were a good team but were certainly fortunate to even make the tourney. Guess they peaking at the right time.

so if Dabo went 13-0, then lost the semi final game of the playoffs, would it be a failure?

Totally different. Going to the cfp in football is the ultimate goal. At that point you are playing with other 3 best teams which in most cases are all equal.

In baseball it’s different... we have lost the regional 3 years in a row AT HOME as the favorite... so yes, it would be a failure.

This team won 47 this year. I would have been happy with 35 wins. We Started the season
with so many questions about pitching. K Wilkie went from the player I would have benched
early in the season to my MVP of this team. The season took its toll on Kyle in the
last part of the season. Kyle was as good as any catcher we have had in many years. I know
what group I am comparing him to and he deserves to be right there IMO. Seth could have left
CU as a a player we could talk about the same way we talk about DW4. He had so many opportunities
to win or put us in position to win but came up short. I do not want to talk about a kid who from
what I have seen as a great teammate but when we needed it I think there were other players
I would have rather seen in a walk off win opportunity. 47-17 is a great season and I hate it
ended the it did but the 1 thing I worried about at the start of the season is the thing that
ended up getting us in the end, pitching. Thank you to the Sr's, draft eligible Jr & So and all other players in a GREAT season. Good luck in the future and when you leave Clemson A TIGER you
will always be A TIGER.

The warning signs were evident throughout the season, being swept by ncs and Miami at home. Inconsistent pitching and un-timely hitting. Yes we won 15 one run games, but they could have been losses as well. We had guys in the lineup that could not hit their way out of a wet paper sack. Hitting is a learned skill, there are very few natural hitters. Where was our staff when it comes to making them better hitters? Our team batting average was about 230 you do not make the big dance with that.

As Yogi said this is deja vu all over again. The 64 million dollar question is where do we go from here?

Very Different. Making the CFP is like getting

To Omaha. The baseball team didn’t get close. Still a good season though.

Few more things.... Not much speed on base paths. Our leading base stealer had 10 steals....Only 2 batters hitting over 300...No true lead off hitter to get things rolling...We also had wayyyy too many strikeouts with runners in scoring position with less that 1 out...Could never lay down the bunt when needed... Pitching was decent not very deep though...Baseball is a funny game though. Did you see the 1st baseman from vandy.. Last year he hit over .300 with 18+ hrs and this year he was batting under .200 with like 1 Hr (may have went up to .300 after our game though). Hopefully some of the young guys step up next year or it might be a long season.. we will be losing a bunch of offensive production in Beer and Williams. Hopefully we will start hitting for average and less long ball but we will see. Our young outfield does looks outstanding on Defense but man they have to put in some work this off season on offense!!!

Your Seth Beer assessment is completely off base.

He was thrown off speed pitches all year and had to adjust so much over the last 2 seasons, he's likely the most talented player to come through this program.

Of his 21 HR's, only 7 occurred in games you consider "out of reach". 14 of his Homeruns came when a came was within one swing of the bat, also the Tigers were 19-2 when he homered.

The let down was the approach, if you are going to play station to station baseball, you can't have so many guys that hit .240 or worse. This team was built like a middling MLB team, without the high end pitching. Sure, power for days in 5 of the lineup spots... however when you run into good pitching, it will always trump good hitting.

Beer: he's likely the most talented player to come through

Jun 4, 2018, 10:36 AM

On the diamond Seth Beer isn't even in the same league as Khalil Greene. Seth is a great long ball hitter and thats about it. In that he is still probably only around the edge of the top 5.
