Hollywood has just completely run out of new ideas....

creativity has shot the wad. Or maybe it's just that studios/producers can no longer gamble on a great novel or s c r i p t... they have to guarantee it's a "blockbuster" to get financial backing. In the last month, I've gone to see the Top Gun & Elvis movies. Haven't been to a movie theater in many years, but my GF's nephew wanted to go see these, so we went. They were both just OK. Biggest surprise was this Greenwood theater has numbered and reclining seats, that's a new one on me...
But watching all of the previews of upcoming movies... they're basically all the same. Superhero and comic book movies and CGI-generated horsechit. We looked at each other and said - Isn't that just like the previous preview? It was almost hard to tell when one ended and the other began. Thor, Toy Story 12, Minions VII, Black Adam, Jurassic Park 8, whatever. That's just the ones I remember. It's like every movie now just tries to "out weird" the others or reproduce a proven but tired formula.
We both agreed... not a single one of those movie previews looked even mildly interesting.
There's a reason neither of us has been inside a theater in years, except to take a young family member.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High. You could've watched Phoebe Cates getting out of the pool on the big screen and you didn't do it?
It's a weird time now. The Godfather, were it to come out today, would be a limited series on HBO Max. The theatres are going to die. I never really cared about the giant screen like I did about the sound you got in a theatre. I can now match the clarity and bass in my house.

Most movies enhance their shots with CGI now and the really good stuff is stuff you can't notice. David Fincher is a master at using CGI in a way where you can't tell.
Then there are things like The Mandalorian and The Batman (the newest one) which are using something more sophisticated to build sets. It's wild.

And they revealed the sound stage they were using that has the 360-degree dome of sync'ed LCD's, combined with traditional, practical set builds... mind blown.

I learned some time ago that when the only thing a movie can brag about is the CGI, it's gonna suck. Characters are where it's at. That's why good plays work, with small stages, minimal sets, and interesting stories and situations. All that other stuff can add to it, but you can't rely on it when the characters are weak and unmemorable.

Check top-grossing movies of all time.

They are doing what makes money. Sorry for the formatting, but here are the 50 movies I found with over a billion gross. Of these 50, a whopping 35 of them are action/adventure movies that are in some sort of series/franchise, including Top Gun. Of the remaining 15, I count 14 Disney cartoons or re-makes if said cartoons.
The only one that doesn't fit either category is Titanic.
I'm not complaining personally, because I actually like most of these movies. So I'm part of the massive target audience.
1 Avatar $2,847,397,339 2009 2 Avengers: Endgame $2,797,501,328 2019 3 Titanic $2,201,647,264 1997 4 Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens $2,069,521,700 2015 5 Avengers: Infinity War $2,048,359,754 2018 6 Spider-Man: No Way Home $1,901,232,550 2021 7 Jurassic World $1,671,537,444 2015 8 The Lion King $1,663,250,487 2019 9 The Avengers $1,518,815,515 2012 10 Furious 7 $1,515,341,399 2015 11 Frozen II $1,450,026,933 2019 12 Avengers: Age of Ultron $1,402,809,540 2015 13 Black Panther $1,347,597,973 2018 14 Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 $1,342,359,942 2011 15 Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi $1,332,698,830 2017 16 Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom $1,310,466,296 2018 17 Frozen $1,281,508,100 2013 18 Beauty and the Beast $1,273,576,220 2017 19 Incredibles 2 $1,243,089,244 2018 20 The Fate of the Furious $1,236,005,118 2017 21 Iron Man 3 $1,214,811,252 2013 22 Minions $1,159,444,662 2015 23 Captain America: Civil War $1,153,337,496 2016 24 Aquaman $1,148,528,393 2018 25 The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King $1,146,436,214 2003 26 Spider-Man: Far from Home $1,131,927,996 2019 27 Captain Marvel $1,128,462,972 2019 28 Transformers: Dark of the Moon $1,123,794,079 2011 29 Top Gun: Maverick $1,115,234,231 2022 30 Skyfall $1,108,569,499 2012 31 Transformers: Age of Extinction $1,104,054,072 2014 32 Jurassic Park $1,099,699,003 1993 33 The Dark Knight Rises $1,081,153,097 2012 34 Joker $1,074,445,730 2019 35 Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker $1,074,149,279 2019 36 Toy Story 4 $1,073,394,593 2019 37 Toy Story 3 $1,066,970,811 2010 38 Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest $1,066,179,747 2006 39 The Lion King $1,063,611,805 1994 40 Rogue One: A Star Wars Story $1,056,057,720 2016 41 Aladdin $1,050,693,953 2019 42 Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides $1,045,713,802 2011 43 Despicable Me 3 $1,034,800,131 2017 44 Finding Dory $1,028,570,942 2016 45 Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace $1,027,082,707 1999 46 Alice in Wonderland $1,025,468,216 2010 47 Zootopia $1,024,121,104 2016 48 Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone $1,022,290,019 2001 49 The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey $1,017,030,651 2012 50 The Dark Knight $1,006,102,277 2008

Not a single one of those did I or would I go to the theater to see. I've seen maybe a handful of those on your list because they were on TV at a moment when there was nothing else on that caught my attention or I was too lazy to change the channel. I would imagine that not a single one of those would make my top 10,000 or so movies to watch in any format (TV, theater, digital device, etc). I am definitely not among the great unwashed masses that Hollywood obviously markets its movies to.

It cost like 25 cents to go see "Casablanca"
Jul 6, 2022, 8:18 AM

and maybe 75 cents to go see "The Dirty Dozen". Around $2 to go see the original "Star Wars".
now it's $20 to go see the Dweebs or whatever those little yellow cartoon things are.
Dollar number comparisons make no sense. Of course new movies gross more money.

"the National Enquirer outsells the Wall Street Journal, and the Jerry Springer Show has higher ratings than 60 Minutes". And it seems Hollywood is now marketing only to the dumbed-down masses. No offense.

Here's my thing on remakes and sequels... once the cat is
Jul 6, 2022, 1:34 PM
|
|
outta the bag, we all know what's coming and it gets very boring and repetitive. For, ex, the original Rocky was great, but after about Rocky 2, I didn't even bother. You already knew the story line... he's an underdog boxer, going up against an unbeatable opponent, blah blah blah. Nothing new. Same old, same old.
Or the original Jurassic Park in 1993. It was amazing, and we were just learning about DNA and the possibilities. It was somewhat plausible that they could pull off something like that in the future. The story line, acting & special effects were great. But all the sequels? Nah. Just some reiteration of the original... there will be dinosaurs, some folks will die, etc. Nothing new.
The only sequel I've ever seen that held it's weight was Godfather 2.
