Trying to analyze Butch Zatezalo’s basketball scoring achievements at Center High School and Clemson University is a monumental task. Even though he wasn’t tall, Butch combined speed, spirit, and shooting skill to rack up 3472 points in his six seasons of varsity competition, which gave him a career scoring average of 25.2 points per game. Center High School made its basketball debut in the 1963-1964 season under Coach Sarge Alberts, and Butch became the instant star of the new Trojan cage squad. He earned All Section honors as a sophomore and then whipped in 622 points his junior season, setting a Center High single season scoring record. As a senior, Butch averaged 30.6 points per game, setting a Beaver County record. He was named third team All State and MVP of the WPIAL Class B. His 27.2 points per game average was a county record as was his three year scoring total of 1711 points that was broken by Denny Wuycik. Butch continued to chalk up scoring records at Clemson, leading the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1968 with a 23 point average and in 1969 with a 25.8 point average. After his collegiate career, Butch served as a distribution manager for a textile firm in Spartansburg, South Carolina

Clemson Legend Zatezalo Passes: Clemson basketball Hall of Famer George “Butch” Zatezalo has died at his home outside of Pittsburgh. He was 57. Zatezalo, a 1970 graduate, still holds the school record with a 23.5 points per game average. He also held the school scoring record with 1,761 points, which was broken in 1990 by Elden Campbell. He was inducted into the Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame in 1988. The cause of death was not immediately known. [8/26/05]

Thanks for the great question ... it's fun to remember the way the game once was ...

The 1965-66 Tiger squad played at Wake Forest and essentially every second half shot was long ... mostly by Gary Helms or Jim Sutherland. Missed shots were gobbled up by Randy Mahaffey or Hank Chanel but with a 75% accuracy, the missed shots were few. Fascinating game.

In the ACC the best that I remember was Bob Verga at Duke. Skip Harlicka at South Carolina was amazing as was Paul Long at Wake Forest. Was Butch the best ever at Clemson ... very likely.

NCState won the NCAA title in 1983 with a lot of two-point bombs. Sydney Lowe, Derrick Whittenburg, Terry Gannon all were exceptionally accurate.

In the pro ranks of the 1970s Clyde Frazier and Jerry Lucas with the Knicks, Geoff Petrie with the Trailblazers, Jerry west with the Lakers were noteworthy long range shooters.
