Ever wonder where the phrase “Peeping Tom” originated? Turns out, it’s almost 1000 years old (at least the story from which it is drawn is).

Lady Godgifu, old English for God’s Gift, and known in the modern tongue as Lady Godiva, was the wife of Earl Leofric of Mercia in the mid-1000’s, during the reign of Edward the Confessor. Earl Leofric and Godgifu established a Benedictine monastery at Coventry, and she apparently was notoriously pious and a big supporter of the monks there. Leofric was apparently a brutal overlord of Mercia, and levied tons of taxes and oppressive rules, and his wife begged him, pestered him, over and over again to give the people of Coventry a reprieve from the taxation. It was all they talked about. She 1000% held out on him because of how mad she was about this. He finally assented, and agreed to lower their taxes…. If…. Godgifu would ride through the market of Coventry on her horse, at midday, butt naked. She agreed.

Before the appointed time she made a proclamation that everyone had to stay inside and close their windows. She took a small retinue of Huscarls, stripped down to her birthday suit, and rode through the marketplace on horseback. Apparently everyone obeyed her command but one, a local tailor. Named Thomas. Godgifu’s guard caught Tailor Tom watching the show and blinded him.
