Has anyone ever taken an obed for a ride

Jul 9, 2019, 8:41 AM

How is it? Nice? looks like a nice bike

https://charleston.craigslist.org/bik/d/north-charleston-litespeed-obed/6923091932.html

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

that’s an olllllld version of that frameset,

Jul 9, 2019, 8:43 AM

But that bike will be bombing trails after we are all dead and gone. Great bike and the components were all top notch when new.

are you a mountain bike expert?

Jul 9, 2019, 8:53 AM

I'm looking for a couple decent bikes (<$200) for wife and I on craigslist. Want a hard tail for both bikes (16-18" frame)

This looks like a good deal but doesn't specify what condition the giant is in. The other two look expensive but are in pieces

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I’m not up on the new bikes, but if you want something

Jul 9, 2019, 8:57 AM

That was awesome a decade+ ago, you’ve come to the right place.

To answer your question,

Those low end Giant frames are heavy Chinese shid.

Check this one out. They’d take 200 easy. Great frame, reasonably nice components.

Re: To answer your question,

too far of a drive.

this guy said he would take 200 for this bike

https://charleston.craigslist.org/bik/d/north-charleston-gt-avalanche-10/6928076460.html

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

ok frame, above average components.

Jul 9, 2019, 9:29 AM

I’d go for it....next to the bike’s fit, the components are one of the biggest make or break items on whether you’ll enjoy riding a certain bike. Deore/XT are great components.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpgringofhonor-obed.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

not sure I'd call deore 'great'

Jul 9, 2019, 10:16 AM

perfectly suitable for someone looking for a sub $200 bike to toot around in?
Absofreakinlutely.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

XT is absolutely great.

Jul 9, 2019, 10:19 AM

They've gone so bottom of the barrel lately that the Deore probably are great in comparison.

I always looked at them like watches. Anything below Deore was shid built to a price. Deore was a Sekio. Not flashy, but good quality and perfectly servicable. XT was an Omega. Great quality, and as much as almost anyone would ever need. XTR was a Rolex. Marginally better but at a premium, and only the expert or person wanting the cachet would want or need it.

I've been looking into getting back into MTBing hard*

Jul 9, 2019, 10:27 AM

*the search, not me**

** ok, sometimes me.

it's been 7-8 years since I stopped, due to time/injury/money....but I loved riding.

I feel like I'm completely starting over w/ new tech/specs/geometry (looking at slack hardtails, mostly)....#### like dropper posts, 27.5+ mid fat tires, 1x drivetrains (which I love the idea of), BOOST spacing etc...

####, even Suntour is (supposedly) making some really good forks now

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I hate it now.

Jul 9, 2019, 10:34 AM

Used to be you could buy a nice bike and know it would be a nice bike 5 years from that point.

Now it's like you drive off with your new bike and in two weeks it's a commodore 64.

"Pffft, you have directional carbon fiber and 27.5" wheels? LOLOLOL. Cross hatched carbon fiber is soooo much more superior and if you don't have 28.65" wheels you may as well be on a unicycle"

I tune this to the same as beer

Jul 9, 2019, 10:44 AM

your fancy 8.2% DIPA might be nice
your fancy limited releast stout might be great

but really you'd be just as happy with a sierra nevada pale ale and it does the same thing in the long run.

Re: I tune this to the same as beer

Jul 9, 2019, 10:46 AM

Until you have to spend $200 cause the chain, gear set and saddle are all shiiit. Just go get a new bike.

Surly, All-City, Specialized. Those are the only bikes I would purchase.

Trek is ok if you want to spend the $ on carbon. Other than that, they are crap.

Re: are you a mountain bike expert?

Jul 9, 2019, 10:36 AM

I would never buy a used bike. You really just pay for components at that point. You are searching to take 2-3 bikes and make 1 at that point.

Go to your local bike shop that isn’t a Trek dealer and purchase a good bike.

Bruh, that's a $50 bike.

Jul 9, 2019, 10:43 AM [ in reply to Re: are you a mountain bike expert? ]

Rigid Fork, cantilever brakes. That thing was new when the spin doctors were popular.

they tend to lowball a tad on some newer/higher spec'd rides....but you should be able to get a realistic idea on $$ for the range you're looking at
