Hiring Coach K @Duke ... how did they know? Seriously ...

Feb 11, 2022, 1:25 PM

What was it about his tenure at Army that made them confident he was ready for the ACC?

He did okay at Army. Had one really strong season. But, he fell to a losing record his last season there and his first three seasons at Duke we’re pretty unremarkable.

What did the Duke AD know about hiring that seems to have eluded several Clemson ADs through the years?

Was K a highly sought after coach by all the major schools with openings that year?

Did they know how to spot a real under-the-radar guy with something that nobody else could see?

Or did they just get lucky?

Lucky. Army guy probably had a great interview and someone you could see giving a chance to run your program. It worked in their favor. That is just my uneducated opinion.

Yeah, but also Army has never made the NCAA. Ever. Never won a conference tourney or even appeared in the championship game (since 91 - indy before that). They have only had 3 winning seasons in the past 31 years in the patriot league. Heck they are .300 in conference. So being .500 is about their ceiling.

Their last NIT was with Coach K. He won 20 games there and 19 the next. Sure he fell back towards the their norm.

Even the best coaches (or coaching jobs) take a nothing team and make them mid table...

Guess Tom Butters (Duke AD at the time) saw something in

Feb 11, 2022, 1:34 PM

Coach K kind of like TDP saw something in CDS. The bigger question is... why would Bill Foster leave DUKE for South Carolina??

That is a great? I was unaware he left Duke for SC. Never understood Odom going to Columbia either.

He almost got fired a couple of years in.

Bobby Knight. K played and coached under him at Army.

I had forgotten about the Bobby Knight connection but would still have to wonder how much clout BK had when Coach K interviewed. Not up on the history of BK so he may have already had a national championship at that time. Just seems Coach K has been coaching forever.

Bobby Knight was an assistant at Army to Tate’s Locke

Feb 11, 2022, 2:02 PM

It could be said that the common thread between Knight, ”K”, and Army is Tate’s Locke.

Strange that we hired the supposed godfather of those two HOF coaches and it was a disaster for us.

Re: Bobby Knight was an assistant at Army to Tate’s Locke

The NC schools were cheating like hell in BB competing against each other. When Tates started doing the same thing they fried him and Clemson. Their attitude because they owned the conference was we can but you can’t. Duke and NC became blue bloods by buying players. They got their programs to the point that that don’t have to do it as much. Don’t you think Duke bought off Zion? Don’t you think Duke is paying their one and dones. NC is not cheating as much and this is why they are struggling more than Duke. Ratface bought a lot of wins thru the years.

K built Duke with inferior talent. It evolved into top talent, but he won his first Natty with a less than stellar roster.

Thinking BK had 2 NCs when Duke hired K.***

Yes, Tates needed a job, but Knight worked for Locke

initially at Army. Tates groomed Bobby Knight’s career.

By the time Knight hired Locke in the late 80s, Tates was a has-been and Knight was throwing him a bone.

That era is not particularly pertinent.

Kind of sounds like Dabo and Clemson.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Same way TDP "knew" about Dabo?

Feb 11, 2022, 2:07 PM

Probably part intuition and part luck.

Because he trained under Bobby Knight, they knew. The same way schools hire K's former players and assistants.

At that time he was a strict disciplinarian. That is the image Duke wanted at that time.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The biggest thing at that time was that he played

Feb 15, 2022, 11:43 AM

and coached for Bobby Knight and Bobby Knight vouched for him and gave him a glowing recommendation. It's hard to impress Knight and back then he carried alot of weight in the ncaa.
