promising Depression ridden America a "New Deal". Him being elected was not the only big thing that happened in the latter part of 1932. The big news for the 1933 college football season actually happened in December of 1932, as well. That was when 13 members of the Southern Conference split away, and formed a new conference, which they named the Southeastern Conference. The Southern Conference would go forward with ten members, including Clemson College.
Clemson continued to play most of the same teams that they historically had played in the past. And, the results for this season did not improve very much above what the 1932 season had brought. The Tigers compiled a 3-6-2 overall record, with only two of those games being conference games. A 1-1 conference mark saw Clemson finish 6th out of ten teams.
The SoCon Champion for 1933 was Duke, with a 4-0-0 conference mark, and 9-1-0 overall record. The fact that they were declared solo conference champions showed that the SoCon had changed the way they decided this, as South Carolina was also undefeated in the conference, but had played one fewer conference games, with a 3-0-0 mark. Poor Cooties, it seemed they couldn't catch a break, even back then.
Clemson did help them out in one aspect, though. We provided them with another win on Big Thursday, their 3rd in a row in the series. If this was modern times, they would be flashing three fingers, and saying they had finally put Clemson in their rear view mirror. Sound familiar? Clemson still led the all time series 19-11-1. And, the Coots were about to embark on a LONG dry spell against the Tigers, starting in 1934. Within 8 games of 0.500 was as close as they would ever be again in the series.
But, in 1933, things were still pretty bleak looking, as the Tigers ended the season with yet another loss to the Furman Paladins, this time by a score of 6-0. This series was marked by nearly all the games being extremely low (or NO) scoring affairs. Furman vs Clemson all time football series was actually tied several times over the early years, with the Tigers not taking and holding the overall lead in the series for good until 1939. All season results below:
Presbyterian T 6–6 At Georgia Tech L 2–39 (Grant Field up to its same old tricks) NC State W 9–0 At George Washington T 0–0 At South Carolina (State Fairgrounds, Columbia, SC, Big Thursday) L 0–7 (Clemson leads series 19-11-1) At Ole Miss L 0–13 At Wake Forest W 13–0 At Wofford L 13–14 (Tenacious bunch of Terriers!) At. Mercer L 0–13 The Citadel W 7–0 At Furman L 0–6
EIGHT road games, including a stretch of six in a row, and only THREE home games. John Swofford's grandfather must have come up with that schedule.
