Sometimes the road to the truth is so elusive it's confusing and reality becomes illusion.

86 years ago, the 1936 Clemson College Tigers were seeing

Jun 11, 2022, 9:01 AM

some changes in the world of college football under 6th year Coach Jess Neely.

The Associated Press began to put forth a weekly "poll" with their "rankings" of the relative strength of the various college teams. Also, within the SoCon, more conference games were being played, since the league had now expanded to 16 members.

With a final national “ranking” of No. 11, Duke won the conference with a 7-0-0 conference mark, and a 9-1-0 overall record. Clemson finished 6th of 16 teams, with a 3-3-0 conference mark, and a break even 5-5 overall record.

Of note, there was apparently not even an attempt at “home and home” series, as we made our 3rd consecutive trip to Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, and limped home after another decisive defeat by Alabama, this time by a score of 32-0.

There was good news to report later on, however. The Tigers prevailed on Big Thursday over the Coots, by a score of 19-0. The shutout and 3rd consecutive win in Columbia took Clemson's lead in the overall series to 22-11-1.

In other good news, Clemson notched a VERY rare victory over the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Grant Field in Atlanta, squeaking out a narrow 14-13 win. That place has NEVER been kind to Clemson.

But, following a win over the Citadel in Charleston, the season would end on a down note, with two consecutive losses, Kentucky on the road, and Furman, once again, at Riggs Field. Furman had our number about as often as we had theirs back then. All results below:

Presbyterian W 19–0 (The Blue Hose settled into being our opener for many years.)
VPI W 20–0
At No. 4 Alabama L 0–32
At No. 11 Duke L 0–25
At Wake Forest L 0–6
At South Carolina (Carolina Stadium, Columbia, SC, Big Thursday) W 19–0 (Clemson leads series 22-11-1)
At Georgia Tech (Grant Field Win!) W 14–13
At The Citadel W 20–0
At Kentucky L 6–7
Furman L 0–12

Interesting with so many away games and so few home games

Jun 11, 2022, 9:55 AM

A lot of schools didn't didn't want to travel to "little ole Clemson" which was kind of out in the middle of nowhere down a country road back then. Hwy 123, which started in the mid to late 30s and fully connected Clemson to Greenville by the mid to late 50s, changed that somewhat and benefitted Frank Howard's teams.

A lot of those big name schools back then like Bama and GT snobbed themselves out of playing in Clemson and if Clemson wanted to play them, Clemson had to do all the traveling. Seems fair enough. Maybe those yearly end of season losses could have been bc the Tigers were travel weary. Good thing Big Thursday was mid season back then.
