Sometimes the road to the truth is so elusive it's confusing and reality becomes illusion.

84 years ago, the 1938 Clemson Tiger football team was much

improved under 8th year Coach Jess Neely. This edition of the Tigers would post a fine 7-1-1 overall record, including a 3-0-1 mark in the SoCon. This resulted in a 2nd place finish behind the Conference Champion No. 3 Duke Blue Devils. (5-0-0, 9-1-0) At this particular point in history, the 2nd place finish was our highest ever in the conference.

Newspapers of the time had flowery headlines for football games. For instance, Tulane evidently was expected to run over the Tigers, because after our 13-10 win, the headline was “Clemson's senior band stuns confident Tulane in 13-10 tilt.”

Once again in 1938, the Tigers had to be Road Warriors, as only two of nine games were played at Riggs Field. As part of this quirky schedule, we played the George Washington Colonels at Furman's Sirrine Stadium in Greenville, coming away with a 27-0 win.

The Tigers lone defeat was at the hands of the Tennessee Volunteers in Knoxville. “Hip-tossing Volunteers Outclass Clemson, 20-7” was the newspaper headline. No wonder nobody likes Tennessee.

Our lone tie was one of those strange “neutral site” games, where we tied VMI 7-7 in Charlotte, NC.

The annual Big Thursday win over the Coots was again achieved. The newspaper headline via the Greenville News was “Clemson's Great Team overwhelms Birds, 34-12” This would be the Tigers 5th win in a row in the series, taking the overall lead out to 24-11-1.

That win over South Carolina would be the first of five consecutive wins to end the 1938 season. We had a tailback by the name of Banks McFadden who was a huge contributor to our success. He would go on to be associated with Clemson College for over 40 years as a coach and administrator, and would later be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame, in 1959.

Presbyterian W 26–0
At Tulane W 13–10
At Tennessee L 7–20
At VMI T 7–7
At South Carolina (Big Thursday, Columbia, SC) W 34–12 (Clemson leads series 24-11-1)
At Wake Forest W 7–0
George Washington (Sirrine Stadium, Greenville, SC) W 27–0
At Kentucky W 14–0
Furman W 10–7

First game at home, last game at home, everything in between on the road. Wild scheduling back then.
