79 years ago. 1943 was a tough year for the Clemson football

Tigers. With a large portion of able bodied young men off to war, offense was in short supply for 4th year Coach Frank Howard. Scoring only 94 points TOTAL for an eight game season will not win you many games, and it didn't, as we compiled only a 2-6 mark.

Also due to the war, some schools did not field football teams. The Southern Conference was now down to just 10 teams competing in football. Clemson finished 7th of the 10, with a SoCon mark of 2-3-0. No.7 Duke was the Conference Champion, with a 8-1-0 (4-0-0) record.

In a foretelling of things to come, the Presbyterian Blue Hose got a rare win over the Tigers, squeaking out a 13-12 victory.

Attesting to the fact that we were in a World War, we played a game against “Georgia Pre-Flight” school. This was the US Navy's pre-flight aviation training school at the University of Georgia. They “flew” over the Tigers to the tune of 32-6.

Adding to the season's misery was a 33-6 drubbing by the Coots on Big Thursday in Columbia, before a crowd of 18,000. Clemson still leads the series 27-13-1.

After a several season absence, Georgia Tech returned to our schedule, and the same old Grant Field misery was still there for us, as they pounded the Tigers in the season's last game by a 41-6 margin. All results below:

Presbyterian L 12–13
At NC State W 19–7
At VMI L 7–12
At South Carolina (Big Thursday, Columbia, SC) L 6–33 (Clemson leads series 27-13-1)
Wake Forest L 12–41
At Davidson W 26–6
vs. Georgia Pre-Flight L 6–32
At No. 15 Georgia Tech L 6–41
