77 years ago, in 1945, things were beginning to look up for

Jun 20, 2022, 7:49 AM

Clemson football under 6th year coach Frank Howard. The team compiled a 2-1-1 SoCon mark, and a 6-3-1 overall record. The conference had two nationally ranked teams at seasons end, No. 19 Wake Forest, and Conference Champion No. 13 Duke. (4-0-0, 6-2-0). Clemson finished 4th of the 11 SoCon schools that fielded football teams in 1945.

It HAS to be noted that Duke was consistently at or very near the top of the SoCon year after year, first under coach Wallace Wade, and then under their current 4th year Head Coach Eddie Cameron.

Meanwhile, at Clemson, Presbyterian was finding that Memorial Stadium was indeed Death Valley to them, as the Tigers spanked them 76-0 to open the season.

Unfortunately, Georgia returned the favor in Athens the next week, shutting out the Tigers 20-0.

In Game 4, we played another “wartime” school, the Pensacola Naval Air Station Goslings. They nearly snuck up on us, but Clemson escaped with a close 7-6 win.

NOBODY went home from Big Thursday happy in Columbia, as the Tigers and Capons fought to a 0-0 stalemate. That's kissing one ugly sister right there. Clemson led the series 28-13-2 now.

Next up, the Miami Hurricanes were on the Clemson schedule for the first time ever. They were inhospitable hosts, eking out a narrow 7-6 at home over the Tigers.

From that point, the Tigers took home three consecutive wins, including that rarest of things, a victory over Georgia Tech at Grant Field, by a score of 21-7.

However, the season would end with a 13-6 loss in Memorial Stadium to the No. 16 ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons. All results below:

Presbyterian W 76–0
At Georgia L 0–20
At NC State W 13–0
Pensacola NAS W 7–6
At South Carolina (Big Thursday, Columbia, SC) T 0–0 (Clemson leads series 28-13-2)
At Miami (FL) L 6–7
VPI W 35–0
At Tulane W 47-20
At Georgia Tech (Grant Field) W 21–7
Wake Forest (No. 16) L 6–13

Four home games might not sound like a lot, but it was, comparatively speaking!

Wow, I hadn't really been paying attention. It's great we're already in the 70s.
