the new Atlantic Coast Conference. 1954 wasn't a whole lot kinder to 15th year Coach Frank Howard than 1953 was. There was marginal improvement, however, as the Tigers finished 5th in the ACC vs 6th, and had a 5-5-0 overall record vs the previous years dismal 2-6-1 mark.
Proving that national rankings were still a strange thing back then, ACC Champion Duke (4-0-0, 8-2-1) was ranked No.14, while 2nd place Maryland (4-0-1, 7-2-1) was ranked No.8. In other ACC news, Virginia joined the league, becoming the 8th team in the Atlantic Coast Conference in 1954.
The Tigers played three ranked teams during the season, compiling a 1-2 record vs those teams. A 14-7 win over No.14 Florida in the Swamp was the only bright spot there. Clemson would be stymied on offense for the two straight ranked losses, 16-0 vs No.17 Maryland, and 27-6 to No.18 Auburn.
Big Thursday was again a low scoring bust for Clemson, as the Tigers once again fell to the Capons by a score of 13-8, our 4th straight loss. Clemson's lead in the series was cut to nine games, at 29-20-3. This was as close as the Coots would ever again be to breaking even in the series.
In today's terms, only two of our five wins came against Power 5 teams. But, Clemson did at least end the season on a high note, blowing out the Citadel 59-0 in the Valley. All results below:
