Beat me to that post! I was going to try to boycott all games outside of Clemson due to the issues with CFB refusing to address the NIL and the conference realignment situation. I don't have the will power to do it. Going to be watching several games today for sure.

2 years ago, 2020: Covid. What President Trump initially

Sep 3, 2022, 9:01 AM

derided as “Wuhan Flu” that would be gone in a matter of weeks turned out to be something far different and worse. Pretty much the whole world shut down for various periods of time. Big Pharma companies rushed to bring vaccines to market, only to find the vaccines become a political football in the US. Various government officials truly resembled a bunch of Keystone Kops kicking this can down the road.

In the world of College Football, there were huge debates over whether to even try and HAVE a college football season. Some did, some didn't. Clemson's own Trevor Lawrence turned out to be a pivotal voice that possibly saved at least some semblance of a normal season for the ACC and SEC. The PAC-12 didn't play at all, and the Big 12 finally did, after the ACC and SEC decided to. The BIG pulled off the neat trick of only playing six games, but still having one of their teams get into the College Football Playoff.

In the SEC, it was decided to have only conference games. The ACC decided on 10 conference games and one nonconference game. This led to the incredibly benevolent move by the ACC to allow Notre Dame to join the conference as a member, for ONLY THIS YEAR. I personally would have let them sit at home and rot as an independent, since that is what they so love to be. Due to the strange circumstances, divisions were also eliminated in the ACC for the year, with the top two winning teams competing in the ACC Championship Game.

Teams were scrambling all year to adhere to Covid protocols set up by the league, and have enough healthy players to compete in games when Covid DID break out among players and coaches. It directly affected Clemson when Trevor Lawrence caught a case, and had to sit out two games, one of which was the Notre Dame game. Although backup DJ Uiagalelei played very well, the Irish prevailed in 2OTs by a score of 47-40. But, Clemson would get sweet revenge in the ACC Championship Game, drubbing the Irish 34-10 behind Trevor Lawrence. Both teams would make the CFP, technically giving the ACC two teams in it for the first time, although I personally don't like that claim.

The Covid adjusted regular season got started with the No. 1 ranked Clemson Tigers facing Wake Forest on the road, where we handled business 37-13. The lone noncoference game with the Citadel was next, and a 49-0 cruise in Death Valley was the result. The Tigers put up some pinball numbers the next three games, 41-23 over Virginia, and 42-17 over No. 7 Miami, both in the Valley, and a ridiculous 73-7 smoking of the Bees in Bobby Dodd. Syracuse then fell easily, 47-21 in Death Valley, before the devastating news that Trevor Lawrence had contracted Covid.

DJ Uiagalelei got his first start against Boston College due to this, and went 30-of-41 for 342 yards with two touchdowns in No. 1 Clemson's 34-28 win. He also had a great game stat wise against Notre Dame the next week, but Notre Dame prevailed in South Bend in double OT by a 47-40 score. Clemson had a long time to think about this defeat, as Florida State wimped out on their scheduled game with the Tigers, even though all Covid protocols had been followed. They just didn't want to be embarrassed on the field, is what I think. Dabo Swinney pretty much agreed, he was hot under the collar to say the least about the literally last minute cancellation pulled off by the Seminoles. He would file it away for next year.

We finally played again three weeks later, and a healthy Trevor Lawrence led the 52-17 romp over Pitt in Death Valley. The final game of the regular season felt bizarre, since it was against Virginia Tech in Blacksburg. There would be no South Carolina game this year, as the SEC had decreed that their teams would play only conference games in this Covid season. The No. 3 Tigers handled the Hoagies with ease, 45-10, to earn a rematch with Notre Dame in the ACC Championship Game.

The Fighting Irish had gone undefeated with the schedule the ACC gifted them with, standing at 10-0 after their last regular season game with Wake Forest was cancelled due to a Covid outbreak on the Wake team. They were ranked No. 2 in the country when Clemson blew them away 34-10 in the ACC Championship game, to claim the Tigers sixth ACC Championship in a row. Both teams would make the College Football Playoffs, with No. 4 seed Notre Dame facing No. 1 Alabama, and No. 2 Clemson in a rematch with No. 3 Ohio State.

Bama would dominate the Irish 31-14 in the Rose Bowl Semifinal. Ohio State made absolutely no secret of the fact that they wanted to face Clemson in the Playoffs, and got their wish. They took a year's worth of frustration out on the Tigers in the Sugar Bowl Semifinal, as detailed below:

Clemson opened the festivities with a drive for a touchdown, with Trevor Lawrence covering the last 2 of the 82 yards on a keeper, for a 7-0 Clemson lead. After an exchange of punts, the Buckeyes answered with a 3 play 77 yard drive, the last 32 on a Trey Sermon run, to tie the game at 7-7. Clemson would hold serve, with a 75 yard drive capped by an Etienne short run to retake the lead, 14-7. But, Ohio State would immediately answer again, with a 6 play 75 yard drive capped by an 8 yard Fields to Farrell pass for the score to tie the game again at 14-14.

But, the rest of the first half was all Ohio State, as the Clemson offense could do nothing, while the Buckeye offense worked off a year's frustration. Clemson, 3 and out, OSU, Touchdown. Clemson three and out, OSU, Touchdown. Clemson 4 and out, OSU Touchdown, to make the score a runaway 35-14 at the half. Coming out of the locker room, Ohio State took the 2nd half kickoff and was driving deep into Clemson territory again when Mike Jones, Jr intercepted Fields in the end zone from the Tiger 12 yard line. From the 20, the Tigers would mount a 9 play, 80 yard TD drive featuring Cornell Powell. He caught a 29 yard pass early in the drive, and a 10 yarder for the touchdown, to cut the lead to 35-21.

But, Ohio State quickly put any sputtering hopes of a Clemson comeback to bed on their next possession, a 7 play, 91 yard march with the last 56 yards covered in a bomb to Chris Olave, to push the lead back out to 42-21. An ensuing Clemson fumble was followed by an exchange of punts, before the Buckeye offense struck again, on a 45 yard strike from Justin Fields to Jameson Williams, to run the lead out to 49-21. Trevor Lawrence hit Cornell Powell again for a 28 yard score on Clemson's next possession, but that was it. A final Clemson drive was blunted when Lawrence was intercepted after 11 plays on the OSU 8 yard line.

The Buckeyes had gotten their “Revenge Tour”, but, they forgot they had one more game to play. After pointing to a rematch with Clemson all offseason, they didn't have a whole lot left in the tank for Alabama, as the Crimson Tide put the Buckeyes on the wrong end of a trouncing, 52-24 to win Nick Saban yet another Championship. Mac Jones's performance for the Tide at QB in this game went a long way toward upping his NFL draft stock considerably. All Clemson 2020 results below:
