16 years ago, 2006: 12 coal miners die in a collapse at the

Aug 20, 2022, 9:02 AM

Sago Mine in West Virginia. Two executives of Enron are found guilty of fraud after a four year investigation following the Enron corporate collapse. Two 500-pound bombs ended the hunt for Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the most-wanted insurgent in Iraq. An outbreak of E. coli bacteria in spinach killed at least three people and sickened 199 others in 26 states.

An undercover British agent helps thwart a terrorist plot that would have simultaneously blown up 10 jet airliners bound for the US. Their plan was to mix gelatin bombs into sports drinks, and ignite them via cell phone or MP-3 player while the planes were in flight. Steve Irwin, the "Crocodile Hunter" , was killed by a stingray barb to the chest. Former KGB spy Alexander Litvinenko died in a London hospital on November 23; large doses of polonium-210 were found in his body. He maintained that he had been poisoned by the KGB.

The ACC Championship for 2006 was won by the 18th ranked (6-2, 11-3) Demon Deacons of Wake Forest. They defeated No. 22 Georgia Tech in the ACC Championship Game by a score of 9-6. But, they would go on to lose the Orange Bowl 24-13, to No. 6 Louisville. Clemson (5-3, 8-5) would finish 4th in the Atlantic Division, after a season that started out well, but fizzled at the end.

National Champions for 2006 were the 13-1 Florida Gators of Coach Urban Meyer. They featured senior QB Chris Leak, and a freshman who was called “The Chosen One” by the name of Tim Tebow. They faced 6 Top 25 teams during the year, having played what the computers called the toughest schedule in the nation. They beat No. 8 Arkansas 38-28 in the SEC Championship Game, and defeated No. 1 ranked Ohio State convincingly 41-14 in the Fiesta Bowl / BCS Championship game to take the title.

At Clemson, Will Proctor took over at QB for the now graduated Charlie Whitehurst. We started the season at home, with a No. 18 ranking, and took an easy 54-6 win over Florida Atlantic. But next, we ventured up north for a 3:30 ABC game at Boston College, and, in a thrilling 2OT game, we got Matt Ryaned again. Sophomore running back James Davis had given us the lead, 33-27 in the 2nd OT with a rushing touchdown, but BC blocked the extra point attempt. They got a rushing touchdown on 2nd down of their following possession, and kicked the PAT to win the game.

Next, we went down to Tallahassee to face an FSU team that was ranked No. 9 at the time, but would ultimately tumble all the way down to a 7-6 record. We gave them the first of those six losses, winning the game 27-20. Coach Bobby Bowden was showing all the signs of someone who has “stayed too long at the dance.” That win got us back into the rankings at No. 19. We celebrated by destroying North Carolina 52-7 in the Valley the following week. Now at No. 18, we kept it going with a home 51-0 whitewashing of La. Tech.

Up to No. 15 for a road nooner at Wake Forest, we prevailed 27-17 over the eventual league champions. Everybody, and I do mean Everybody, remembers this as “The Gaines Adams game". Wake was up to their old tricks bedeviling Tommy Bowden. We were dead and buried, down 17-3 starting the 4th quarter, with nothing going on that was good, and Wake about to kick a field goal to go up 20-3. Until Gaines Adams BLOCKED said field goal, scooped it up, and ran it back for a touchdown. It was all Clemson after that. Anyone who doubts that momentum in a football game is a real thing needs to watch that game.

Up to No. 12, we played Temple at a “neutral site” in Charlotte, and cruised again, 63-9. Next up were the No. 13 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, and, for the first time ever, ESPN's College Gameday Show came to Tigertown. Kirk Herbstreit mentioned that he felt that Clemson hosted one of the best Gameday audiences he'd ever seen. The Gameday audience at Clemson also set a new noise record when measured in the latter half of the show.

In the game itself, Clemson did not disappoint, winning by a score of 31-7. We wore the all purple uniforms for Military Appreciation Day, and made them look really good. This truly was the “Thunder and Lightning” Show. When have you ever heard of a running back who ran for over 200 yards (James Davis) being overshadowed by a running back who ran for over 100 yards (CJ Spiller)? This was the game that Spiller burst up the middle for a 60 yard touchdown, and later caught a little swing pass from Will Proctor near the right sideline, and used two yards of sideline space to juke two of GT's best players completely out of their shoes. All they could grab was handfuls of air as Spiller took it down the sidelines 50 yards to the House., leaving fans and TV announcers flabbergasted. Oh, and Megatron (Calvin Johnson) had ZERO catches for ZERO yards on the day.

To say that Clemson fans were excited to face Virginia Tech on the road the next week would be an understatement. The Hokies had gotten bounced out of the rankings two weeks prior, by virtue of a 22-3 upset at the hands of Boston College and Matty Ice. But, unfortunately for us, news of the Hokie demise proved to be premature. They thumped the now No. 10 Tigers by a score of 24-7. When unranked Maryland got by the now No. 19 Tigers, 13-12, in Death Valley the next week, things were suddenly going the wrong way in a hurry.

This Maryland game was VERY frustrating, as we seemed to spend most of the game down on Maryland's end of the field, but just could not complete drives, having to settle for field goals instead. Even so, we took the lead 12-10 with just over two minutes to go, but the Tiger defense, which had bottled up Maryland's offense the whole 2nd half, suddenly gave way, allowing the Terps to kick the game winner from 31 yards out as time expired. The Joy was quickly bleeding out of the season.

We managed to right the ship a little in Death Valley by defeating NC State 20-14 the next week, but as the Wolfpack would only win two ACC games the whole year, that was little comfort. By now, that word “Clemsoning” was starting to be tossed around by the ESPN pundits with regularity. The wild swings in our play were puzzling to our own fanbase, as well. How could the offense look so dominating one week, and sputter so badly the next?

South Carolina came to Death Valley hopeful, under 2nd year Coach Steve Spurrier. The Coots were beginning to win some recruiting battles due to his Florida fame, and would ultimately finish 8-5 on the year. Clemson broke out the Orange Britches again for the game. They seemed to work early, as Clemson worked out to a 28-14 lead.

But then, Lady Luck suddenly seemed to switch sidelines. We started shooting ourselves in the foot, and South Carolina began to take advantage, again and again. Their QB Mitchell was finding Kenny McKinley, or Sidney Rice with the football for drive sustaining gains, with that duo making big play after big play. South Carolina came all the way back to take a 31-28 lead with 7:51 to go, off a field goal by Ryan Succop. But, Clemson was not that worried, plenty of time remained to make a final drive and win, or at least tie the game.

And, Clemson DID begin a long, methodical, clock eating drive. But, Spiller would be knocked out of the game with a twisted ankle on this drive, and had to watch the end of the game from the sidelines. We got a 1st and goal at the 8 yard line with 1:19 to go. But instead of showing a sense of urgency and trying to win the game right there, it seemed like Coach Bowden had lost all semblance of clock management, and was prepared to just kick a field goal and take the game to OT. On the sideline, he had suddenly gotten that all too familiar vacant stare, like he had forgotten where he was, or what he was supposed to be doing at the time.

When the Coots blitzed and sacked Will Proctor all the way back at the 22 yard line on 3rd down, what had been a chip shot field goal suddenly got a lot longer. Coach Spurrier called timeout to ice kicker Jad Dean. When Dean finally booted the field goal, it hooked just wide left, and the Coots had stolen a win. That sack made the difference, the field goal would have sneaked inside the upright from the shorter yardage. The dejection that was etched in the faces of every Clemson player, especially a miserable CJ Spiller as he limped badly along the sidelines on the way to the locker room, would last far beyond this day. There was no doubt in anybody's mind that the “Head Ball Coach” Steve Spurrier had completely out coached Tommy Bowden at the end of the game. Clemson now leads the series 63-37-4.

We eventually got an invite to the Music City Bowl in Nashville, to face the 7-5 Kentucky squad of Coach Rich Brooks. Clemson had had hopes and expectations of something much better than this, before the sudden implosion at the end of the season. It was evident that the old cliché' really was true this time around, the Tigers didn't want to be there. Kentucky won the game 28-20, and thus began a long, miserable winter of “What might have been” for Clemson fans. We could certainly point to things in three of the four regular season losses that would have reversed those outcomes, had they been handled better by the coaching staff or the players. It was most definitely a winter of discontent. All season results below.
