High School Coaches - where would we be without them?

Jun 6, 2012, 3:37 PM

I can certainly understand criticism of a person for their specific actions but it saddens me to see posts attacking a worthy profession. High school coaches may be the most underpaid, overworked, underappreciated and IMPORTANT callings in our society. If you are a college football fan, where do you think those players come from? How many of these players needed their high school coaches to guide and mentor them?

Perhaps someone could post a poll:

When you were a teenager who provided the most positive role model and influence in your life?

Parent/Grandparent/Relative
Neighbor/Friend
Teacher/Coach
Other

I can tell you what the results would show. The older someone is, say 60+, the more likely the answer is Parent. The 35-60 group will be 60-70% Teacher/Coach and the under 35 group will be 80-90% Teacher/Coach.

Underpaid? Some time back, there was a post listing the salaries of the state's h.s. football coaches. I was flabbergasted by what some of them made. It is a heck of a lot more than my wife and I make combined.
Coaches can be great role models for young kids. Two of the finest men I've ever known were my h.s. football coaches, but they had the right idea. Some forty plus years later both could remember my name even though I wasn't a star player. Whenever I would bump into them they would ask about my well being. Two fine men that loved the game and cared about there players. But if this McDonald kids coach is any reflection on what our young people are looking up to, then Lord help us.

Coaches Salaries

Jun 6, 2012, 4:09 PM

A very few of the top coaches in the state make very good money 80-100K. Usually these coaches have 20-30+ year teaching experience which is the majority of their income, then add in AD and Head Coach supplement(s). Many assistant coaches are younger and make very low pay plus a meager supplement.

The best coaches do it out of a passion for helping young men. Usually the finest coaches had a coach that showed them the proper way to do it. Sounds like you had two good ones, I'm sure they treated all of their players like MVPs.

I guess I shouldn't knock a coach for what kind of money he makes; and I didn't mean to sound critical, but I just remembered that post with the salaries. It seems like a lot of them are well taken care of. I guess the biggest point of my post was that while I had two good men to look up to, this Drummond guy is not the kind of person I would want my kids looking up to.

Most coaches teach something. There are a select few high schools were they don't teach. Your top of the line high schools they don't teach such as Dorman but at all the others I guarantee you they are teaching at least 2 classes on a block. The assistant coaches are the ones who are teaching a full schedule and getting paid very little coaching supplement.
