or was it 1978 (we played ND up there in South Bend in 1979, which I attended with 9 year old Son)..and admits it was about the loudest place he'd ever played.

Good luck with that NOISE Mr.FSU Winston...

1977 was before either upper deck was built...

Death Valley has changed a lot in the intervening years.

The pre-game show by the band was completely silent except for the drum to keep cadence and for the anthems. Then when the tunnel was formed for the team to come down the hill, the band started playing Tiger Rag and the place exploded. It was the Dan Devine silent treatment, because he had complained in the media about the expected crowd noise.

Not many people may remember that at one time there was a so-called "Clemson Rule" against "excessive" crowd noise. A team could be penalized by a loss of a time out if it was deemed by the refs that the noise was too loud. If you ran out of time outs, you could be penalized 5 yards. We were penalized many times during my time at Clemson from 1975-81.

Yes, it was 1977 ... my very first Clemson game. Fell in

love with the place immediately and went to become a student, and now proud alumn!

As mentioned, the pre-game silent treatment was AMAZING. Tiger Band marching and pretending to play. Crowd pretended to clap hands over their heads, but not toucing their hands. Just silence until the Tigers ran down the hill and then the place exploded. It was an incredible performance by the fans, and team too, even though they lost.

GO TIGERS!!

it was my first game as well

went with my Pop, a lifelong ND fan, and my Uncle, a '55 Tiger alum, and i was born that day a Tiger for life.....Joe Montana broke our hearts but two things that day stay with me forever: our DE Jonathan Brooks, gave me his mouthpiece, which i still have, and I met Joe Montana on the field after the game. He patted me on the head (i was 9) and my father congratulated him....then we talked to Ken McAfee, ND's All American TE who told us something along the lines of, "that DE #98 hit me harder than i've ever been hit". That was Mark Heniford, our 195 lb. DE who tore McAfee's ### up all game long.

how the field looks like there's No Grass!

Also, Dan Devine gave the North Side a "Finger" which made my Dad so mad that he almost left his seat to go down for a fight!

Go#3TiGERs!

My dad was playing free safety for Clemson that year. Ive heard the story many times how our D shut them down first have and then bang the second half they came out and showed the D up to pull off a win on the way to NC. Dang it dad. Hahaha
