Hey, Coots. Here is a refreshing dose of Honesty for you.

Nov 10, 2020, 11:00 AM

I hear and read all the time about how the Coots cannot afford to fire Will Muschamp right now, due to the huge buyout. But, I say, if you look at the total situation, they cannot afford NOT firing him, at least at the end of this season, and moreso to make the right statement, immediately.

I think back to where we were in 2008. Logic was, if we were to fire Tommy Bowden, who could we lure to Clemson that was BETTER than him? Conventional wisdom of the time said that our ceiling was 8-9 wins a year, and we should be happy with that. No one would want to come and coach in little old Clemson, South Carolina, especially if we fired a coach with the family name of Bowden. Did we really want to step out into that great unknown without a plan already in place? Then came the debacle of Wake Forest, and suddenly it became crystal clear to me, and several thousand other people who sent letters to the President, that we could NOT go on as we were doing. If we did, by the end of the season, we may have irreparably damaged the fanbase.

I actually saw this firsthand years ago with a Coot coworker. He had been the staunchest of Gamecock supporters for all his adult life, member of the Gamecock Club, perennial season ticket holder, buyer of NAUSEATING amounts of Gamecock paraphenalia, you name it. He got completely disillusioned with them near the end of the Holtz era. To him, they seemed unwilling to make the financial commitment it took to ever be a good football program. He sold all his gear, stopped buying tickets, ended his fandom. And he never looked back, never came back, even when they hired the Old Ball Sac. He died at a relatively young age, never having been a Coot fan again.

This was beginning to happen at Clemson in mid 2008. That handwriting was on the wall. Thank God that Terry Don Phillips had the stones to move forward from Tommy Bowden. You can argue the semantics of the move all you want, the upshot of it is that IT HAD TO HAPPEN RIGHT AWAY.

I don't pretend to be any expert on athletic departments, but, in any business, which is what college athletics is, a business, you get judged on overall success. By that criteria, the Coots first move should be to fire Ray Tanner as AD. He has far beyond used up his 2 Baseball Natty Chits, and has been underwhelming as AD for a long time. They have been loyal to him because of the baseball success, but that time is past now, I believe. They have to make that move, and they have to make the move of firing Coach Boom, buyout be ######. They are on the verge of permanently losing some big financial boosters who have already suspended giving, if the news is to be believed at all. They may have to negotiate the buyout to be paid over the course of several years, but some way, some how, they have to pull the trigger, if they want to save their fanbase, and not continue to be perceived as a laughing stock in the SEC.

They should give him a lifetime contract.

CussChamp is awesome and a great fit for uo6c. He just needs more time to clean-up Spurrier's mess.

A LOT more time !!!!!

Screw Calford.

Okay you owe $20,000 on your car

that you don't like but you need a car and you can swing the payment. You have 10 dollars in the bank. You want a $50,000 car, but you have no money.

Do you keep your 20,000 car?

A must-add to this situation to make it completely accurate:

Your $20,000 car is about to start costing you double the monthly payment on repairs.

That's the only aspect that makes it a tough call for the coots' admin.
