I don’t understand why we would spend $1 million a year on a baseball coach.

Jun 14, 2022, 1:43 PM

Why not spend the $500,000 we have been spending, and apply that additional $500,000 a year toward a need-based scholarship fund to offset the tuition costs for out of state baseball players?

This addresses the endowment issue we have long heard about which places us at a disadvantage in baseball.

Obviously having the right coach matters a lot, but if he’s always at a significant disadvantage in recruiting then he’s never going to reach his potential here.

I’d like to see us be careful with our money since baseball already loses a lot of money every year. Doubling what we pay our baseball coach seems reckless if we don’t fix the major underlying issue.

Just my $0.02.

I dont believe you can focus an endowment only on baseball as that would be circumvent the scholarship limit. Universities like Vandy and UVA limit the amount of debt required for all students based on household income which is why it is allowed.

If you are simply trolling not looking for input then please disregard my response.

I’m serious.

I assume there are ways to get creative so that we aren’t directly spending that money on scholarships that don’t exist.

Not advocating for anything illegal or in the gray zone, just spitballing as to how money can be best used.

There are no rules now. There has to be a way funds could be put in an endowment and then used for scholarahips to study specific areas where family income doesn't matter. It happens all the time at the NCAA Div 3 level where there are no athletic scholarships.

At least you’re willfully demonstrating your complete ignorance. There are no needs based baseball endowments. The boogey man is endowments at places like Vanderbilt that reduce cost of attendance for everyone that attends based on need. For someone so deeply tied in to our athletic programs I would think you would understand basic scholarship rules and how those interplay with grants and other forms of tuition assistance.

I have posted info on this a couple of times: NCAA changes

lacrosse over softball? I’m beginning to think baseball’s not the only thing you don’t understand.

Here’s what I understand about baseball:

-It costs the Clemson athletic department money
-It’s a minor sport at Clemson compared to football and men’s basketball
-Money we spend on a baseball coach means we are taking money from something else
-Our coach is going to be limited by Clemson’s small endowment if he is still competing against other baseball teams with larger endowments

The problem is not the size of the endowment it is how the funds are earmarked. Clemson cannot just go to the bank and dip into it for whatever they want. Based on last years numbers they paid out 1.428 million in unrestricted endowment funds for fy21. I dont know what those dollars were for but the unrestricted endowment is what you would have to tap into. I doubt that would ever happen though, nor should it really.

Because that’s what the market demands if you want to have a top flight program. As far as baseball being a minor sport, Many would argue that baseball is more important than basketball at Clemson. I like and support both, but tradition wise, it’s a valid argument.

Baseball is more important than basketball to many of us. But revenue wise there is on comparison. Football and basketball basically fund the rest of the athletic department. JK makes good points

Is that the number? Neff is out front of results if that's the case. You have to take them to Omaha regularly to be worth that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Those would be good questions to ask Mr Neff.

Neff comes across to me as being a gunslinger with the purse strings. You have to feed the football animal. This Conference limits our ability to spend.
