New Story: Deshaun Watson: "I'm not Superman. I'm human. I make mistakes."

Deshaun Watson: "I'm not Superman. I'm human. I make mistakes."

Deshaun Watson insists he isn't Superman, even though his superhero style of play has thrilled college football fans over the last two seasons. Superman has been absent through the season's first two weeks, however, but Monday's honest appraisal might be a step in the right direction if Superman is to get his cape back.

So next time y'all call him out, remember he is a kid with

Sep 12, 2016, 12:21 PM

a TON of pressure on him. Not just from teammates and coaches, but from himself. He wants to be able to take care of the mother who has done so much for him and reach his goal of playing at the next level. So, next time you call for him to be bench or say he is not worthy of the Heisman Trophy, think about what he is going through and think about all he has done for Clemson University. And before I get flamed, I know it is not everyone and the minority is often the loudest. Go Tigers!

He's not in the NFL, so why should he rush that pressure on top of himself as a college player. Your statement is asinine and has no place whatsoever in a thread on a college sports board. Let him grow up and face the adversities of his college career before you throw him in an NFL lineup with the horrific pressure as an NFL QB will experience. If you listen to or heard a word of what he has had to say, the pressure of being an all that college QB star, you would have heard that he has had more on his plate than he enjoys eating. I love what this kid has done at Clemson, he had a 14-1 record in his first full season as our starter. The last thing I want for him to hear coming from the fans in DV is someone booing, or someone saying bench him. Is he not allowed 1 bad game in DV, as far as I'm concerned he is, as bad as I hate to see it, I say we never take the ball from his hand even if we lose a game bc we don't have anyone near as good as DW4 really is... If we as fans will only expect what he can give us as long as it's the best he has to give, let that be enough. I'm mad and upset over what we have seen these past two weeks. There has to be a reason, and it isn't all on DW4. Now let's move forward and not worry about what will be in the pressures in DW4's life at the next level of his life in the NFL, FK the NFL as far as I'm concerned, bc I'm a Collegiate sports fan FIRST,where young adults play for pride and trophies!!!

Opening week on the road against an SEC team...WE WON. 1st home game...WE WON. Back off! They may not have been pretty but WE WON. Seriously they're not all going to be 58-0! He's a great player & person he deserves NOTHING but our support! As does this whole team! There are a lot of newbies mixed in & they need a little time to get things ironed out so just calm down & give them some space to adjust.

Sep 12, 2016, 4:36 PM

Exactly... I think you're also seeing a lot of NEW fans too... jumping on the train that our program has put into motion - they don't know how to react, or how we fans of the yesterday teams, can stand and cheer for our tigers no matter what, for the whole game. That's Clemson... these new people or disgruntled people need to remember that. These kids feed off of that, give 'em plenty of food to grow.

They maybe, but booing the kid that took us to our 1st NCG in 34 long long years ago is beyond ignorant. I'm 64 old, and 34 years is more than half the life of this older man. But what is really atrocious, he didn't lose a game, he just didn't have 2 of his best game. I guess a win to some don't count unless it's a boring freaking blow out!!! They are not suited to be a sports fan bc, no team will ever blow out every team they play!!!

boos over a 2-0 record from the bandwagon fans that were celebrating last year is crazy. Coaches and team need to concentrate on things they can control and tune out the perfection seeking fans that can't produce the same in their own lives.

I don't usually say anything negative on this website, but I want to tell those who is criticizing Deshaun they are the same ones yelling his praises. Let opposing teams, or whoever say negative things, but as a real fan of Clemson you will support him and the coaches...you had your expectations so high you never considered this is another year. I thank this man for telling you like it is. I will support the Tigers because they are my team...I have been there for them through the bad and good years. Deshaun is not the only player on this team...he is just the most recognizable member because of the position he plays. Tigers Fans if you are truly a Tiger fan stay true through the good and bad...Deshaun is right he is not superman and he also is the first to tell you it takes ever team member to win those games. Tigers! refocus...stay cool and remember you are the Tigers!!!! Forget what was said in the heat of disappointments and emotions and focus on each game like I know you will. That goes to the coaches also...when we lost the natty we put a lot of pressure on this team!So fans get out there and support and don't criticize...Go Tigers... BE the Team Believe and Execute. FOCUS!!!

FANS!!!! This is just two games ... help them to be the team we think they can be!!

Step Down from the soapbox please... Fans have a right to expect good ball play within reason. What has encouraged me is that NOW, he has realized that the fans did see something missing in the first game that he brushed aside. The fact that he noticed his body language in the 2nd game showed a heaviness that did effect in the team... Smart of him to notice and to plan on correcting it.

I'm just saying that it don't matter what any of them felt that day or the week before, they are our guys playing on our team. And we're not going to always get their A, B, or C game. There will be a time or 2 that we see an on the border of a F- game or even less. We can't and the team can't explain it bc at times it just happens. I'm just glad and proud that it was Clemson that they chose over every team in the country....

So basically MacLain, Gore & Peake had all the "swag" in last year's offense? I mean... We returned 8 starters and added depth. We got Mike and Choice back. I don't understand why everyone is so "uncomfortable" now. Did we burn last year's 500 yards & 38 PPG playbook or something? I know he's human but these excuses give me the confuse.

Re: New Story: Deshaun Watson: "I'm not Superman. I'm human. I make mistakes."

Sep 12, 2016, 12:58 PM

I think what you're seeing is how mindset can either augment or interfere with talent. My guess is DW4 has tried to be too accommodating, to the point where his mind isn't clear and focused at any point - including practice, but especially in games. These are young men, and DW4 is clearly feeling pressure far beyond a given play or game. It has been clear to me that he hasn't been having fun all this camp/season. He's had a subtly different demeanor - but it was clear to me that fun was out of the picture. I'm so happy to hear him say all this.

A TON of respect for DW4 for recognizing, acknowledging, and owning this. This feels to me like a real turning point - for DW4 and for the team.

GO TIGERS!

Senior leadership, and Eric Mac Lain provided excellent leadership for our offenses line. And he did an awesome job of helping the younger guys and being a great vocal leader for all the guys along the front 4/7 offensive line. Nobody may not believe that he left a void there (but myself), and I will be glad to hear what others believe is missing on a OL that is loaded with talent and a decent level of experience.

Re: There are several factors to understand

Sep 12, 2016, 12:51 PM

Forget about Heisman talk, it's not worth it. Early season rankings are bogus. The offensive line was ineffective on run plays. You can't be wide receiver "U" when you drop passes. There is a difference between being explosive in the news articles and being explosive in real. I know there are highly paid individuals to make game plans but I don't see playing a lot of guys early in the game just to get a feel for pressure. I thinks this impedes any consistency and groove you want. Special teams? More work. Just because people say you're good doesn't mean anything. Proof is in the play. Bottom line, play loose, play smart, have fun. Don't get caught up in expectations, no one can do better than their best.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: There are several factors to understand

Sep 12, 2016, 2:47 PM

Imagine for a moment if:

The receivers don't drop 7-8 passes.
The offensive line opens some holes.
Ray Ray doesn't go stupid.
Ben doesn't get hurt.
The defense doesn't let up at the end.....

Clemson wins the game by 20 and all of this is nonsense.

Granted, DeShaun missed a few passes, but the rest of the team stunk IMO.

because of how unhappy he looked in post game interviews. Many were just concerned about the kid and voiced that concern by asking if anything was wrong.

It was so light and met with STF looks from real fans.
Until you suit up and practice like them you should never ever boo college kids.

Yeah.... agreed. ... but they booed the s#!t out of Cole Stoudt.

The fans were great, most of the stadium stayed the entire game and you rarely see that on family day with families wanting to get kids out of there.

Its not Deshaun - only 2 plays so far this year upset me

Sep 12, 2016, 1:25 PM

DW4 tries his best, tries to be a good student and a good football player, and no doubt tries to be the best person he can be. If his numbers are not as good this year I am not bothered, coaches (and rest of us) know he gives us the best chance, he plays unless hurt, not even a question.

2 plays that bother me the most, Wayne going out of bounds at Auburn and RayRay dropping the sure TD. These are self inflicted wounds that can undo entire teams year long effort. We pride on getting most out of ourselves, so let us learn from these and play. May be we go 9-3, may be 10-2, but heck 12-0 is still doable, we got game.

Go Tigers.

Why be worried ? The feature of every great team or player is that they know they must work harder and the improvement will come .
Sounds lile they all know what it is that needs to be done , and FOR CERTAIN this team can beat every single team left on the schedule ...it is simply a matter of doing so .

I believe they will .
No worries , mate .

This kid has more pressure on him than most of us adults could ever handle!! I will support him NO MATTER what happens this season!! He and the whole team gave us an amazing season last year and I pray we have another special season but if it doesn't happen I will not turn my back on him, this team or the coaches!!

directed at the incompetence of the officiating crew and not at the players themselves. Any fan is going to get frustrated when reviews are taking 30 years and batted punts aren't getting the ball placed in the proper spot after the penalty. That crew seemed lost that entire game and the fans got tired of it. They seemed to have to huddle and discuss just about every single flag that was thrown. The booing was because of the refs and continued to occur plays later because it was frustrating. The players were not the ones being targeted on Saturday at all.

Charlie Whitehurst sure never apologized for a thing

Sep 12, 2016, 3:10 PM

He just blamed everybody else even on the field with his gestures towards the receivers or whoever he thought needed the blame. Sometimes it's needed for teammates to get on each other but not the way he chose. Charlie needed a slice of humble pie. Deshaun has had his slice and could have easily taken the Charlie Whitehurst route and pointed the finger at everybody else. This is awesome. This guy is awesome. He is mature beyond his years and I love it. He just got everybody behind him 100% by saying this. We will be tighter because of this. We will be rollin' real soon folks.

Re: New Story: Deshaun Watson: "I'm not Superman. I'm human. I make mistakes."

Sep 12, 2016, 4:41 PM

I don't think any true fan of Clemson football thinks DeShaun is Superman.I for one don't,and I don't blame this past Saturday's "team" performance all on him.
The whole team looks flat. The"O" line is not passing blocking(thank goodness for Gallman vs Auburn for picking up some linebacker blitzes),and the only decent gains I have seen in the running have occurred with the jumbo package.
WR's don't seem to be getting much separation, and have dropped a few passes.Granted # 4 has not exactly been pin point with his accuracy but he seems to be running for his life at times.
Defense has been key in both games, but late scoring drives by both Auburn, and Troy have made these games more uncomfortable than necessary.
A few personal foul penalties haven't helped either.
But if anything I think our play calling on offense has really gone vanilla. At times on Saturday,it looked as if Rob Spence was calling the offensive plays again.Come on guys.Open it up.
Finally one thing that no one seems to want to mention is why we can't seem to get"UP" for games like Troy.
One thing I want to see ,even more than getting the offense back on track is a "KILLER INSTINCT"
Just once,I want to see a game's outcome determined by Half.

Never thought I would be glad to have an FCS team on the

We need an easy game to get into a rhythm and build confidence.

Once we get that offense rolling we will have that momentum to build on.

We have yet to get the hot rod on the highway.

The lesson here is that if you do the Superman thing,

Sep 12, 2016, 5:54 PM

you are taking that responsibility. Now he has to say he has not him. He's not the first chest thumper who had to come down off it.

He gets a total pass from me. He was a kid having fun. All been there. But it is a lesson learned. Go do your job, have fun doing it, leave the grandstanding alone.

A lot of people felt something was wrong with the O. It

Sep 12, 2016, 7:44 PM

comes as no surprise that Deshaun took it on himself as a leader to step out and say something about how he is feeling. My bet is the guys rally around him and that NFL scouts notice his continued growth as a leader as well. Speaks volumes about what we already knew.

Interesting that the pressure mounts as the goals are sky high, even someone as talented and level headed as Deshaun is vulnerable to it. Fans are vulnerable as well. Media too. I think his approach to just get back to keeping it simple and fun will make a big difference. It is certainly a different angle when you are on top of the hill and everybody is coming for you vs. climbing and experiencing it all the first time.

The Elephants in the Room

Sep 12, 2016, 7:38 PM

When is anyone going to talk about the elephants in the room? Last Saturday there were 7 passes dropped. Look at what those catches would have done to the team's total yardage, not to mention DeShaun's completion statistics. Then there were two pass interference calls that were not made, one on the goal line. Again, that goes against total yardage and completion statistics, and probably points scored. Plus, we actually had one more touchdown than the record shows, had Cain not made his mistake. Finally, and I know people get tired of hearing this, but the refs called two pass interference calls in one Troy drive that led to a TD for them. That's 7 points they did not earn. Take all of that into account and the spread would have been what we all thought it would be. So why is Deshaun getting so much attention? Sure, he had some bad throws. So did the pro QBs that I watched yesterday. Perhaps he could have played better, but so could the offensive line. At least things didn't get as bad for us they did for Oklahoma State. Go Tigers

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Body language...he hit the nail on the head. And he owned

Sep 12, 2016, 10:30 PM

up to his responsibilities of what that body language can do to the rest of the team. Yes, the WRs and OL and TE have to be responsible for their own performance...and DW4 did not make any excuses for them...but he did say that his own attitude/disposition/emotion/etc. is not without impact. That is exactly how important the QB is! I wouldn't have any other QB than him.

I honestly recognized that something was wrong with the offense when they were jogging onto the field for their first offensive series against Auburn. And it was indeed the body language.

So sorry that the joy has been missing. DW4 and the rest of the team have my cheers...and prayers for recapturing the joy.

Re: No Apologies Necessary!

Sep 13, 2016, 10:44 AM

Deshaun owes no apologies. The pressure on him is immense, and he has always been up to the task, and will continue to be. This man is special, and has helped catapult our program to new heights. I respect everything that he stands for, as well as the performance he puts on every Saturday. What his critics fail to realize is that every opponent we face has been spending the last 9 months trying to do one thing and one thing only: Stop Deshaun. However, they still fail to do so and will continue to fail as long as he is healthy and fighting. Some have been dissatisfied with the performance of the offense, but as a fan that sees more than the box score, I can assure you that we will be alright. All I see is an undefeated team composed of young men that we can all be proud of. Go Tigers!
