Can’t really argue with this other than I’m not sure where they expect us to put transfer portal players. Cut current players?

Bottom line - The only way to get away from this talk is to start winning the games we used to and shut people up. We all clearly remember the agenda on Clemson before we started winning. Well it’s back again.

The argument would be that you could have

Nabbed a portal guy instead of offering a high schooler. For instance we handed out 2 RB offers. One of those could have gone to a portal guy to replace Kobe Pace's experience versus a high schooler w/ no experience.
There really is no argument to be made that the portal being a one way door is affecting the experience of our 2 deep. I guess it still remains to be seen long term if Dabos method will win out by creating loyalty and the ability to retain players.

So which portal guy is going to come here and play 3rd string behind Shipley and Mafah. Or which one is going to beat them out?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I didn't say there was one. Maybe our coaches

3

vetted all 3000 guys and there wasn't one who could help in any way. Heck maybe we offered a handful and they turned us down.
I do know other program's are finding guys from non power 5 schools that are willing to compete for playing time at p5 program's. A guy like a juice wells at south carolina.
Again the only claim I made was that the portal was hurting experience on the 2 deep. I don't think that can be argued. Maybe there is nothing we can do about it but sign more kids out of high school.

Then you should've use WR as an example. No RB is going to portal into Clemson as a 3rd stringer, so bringing in 2 from high school was the right call at this position.

Scholarship numbers include incoming freshman. You wouldn't have to kick someone off the team as the original poster suggested. Just offer one less recruit. Not saying we've made the right or wrong decision. Time will tell.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You seem to keep missing the point.

Portal players don't change schools to be depth anywhere else.

This supports the writers point. Three years ago we signed Shipley and Mafah who had 9 stars between them. This year we signed two guys who had no other P5 offers between them. Maybe they both become star players but more likely like Mikey Dukes who was a three star player with lots of high school stats. The issue is not the portal, the issue is we hired a bunch of inexperienced coaches who are not big time recruiters. That and NIL is kicking our butts

I swear your responses seems as if you don't read at all. How did I support his point? No one is hitting the portal to be a 3rd string RB at Clemson. He should've used a different position as an example.

There are not many guys in the portal who could make the 2 deep for Clemson at any position and that means wide Receivers as well!
And even if there is one that has the physical ability do they have the right attitude? Then on top of that would they even want to come to Clemson.
My personal opinion is the transfer portal and the current way NIL is handled will ruin College Football!

I say if we never ever take a portal guy it’s ok with me. Btw Clemson has had two down years in a row and in those years Clemson won 10 and 11 games and a conference championship! I can’t say this loudly enough no matter what some reporter I have never heard of says…… IT Ain’t Broke!!!

Re: I didn't say there was one. Maybe our coaches

Jan 12, 2023, 1:30 PM

It depends on what your perception and desires are. We're not recruiting like Bama, uga, osu and it's showing. Dabo's way is recruit less and hopefully develop. In so doing, you have to be superior in your evaluation and your development. Jeff developed WR. Grisham has either missed on eval or hasn't developed. Same with Austin. Although his recruiting has upgraded. Time will tell if they develop. When does Tristan develop? He was tagged as first year contribution and now we're on year 3. Why? Legit question.

Can Wes grow, can street grow? Possibly. How long does it take and will recruiting suffer? Or be satisfied with 10 and 11 win season but no national championship... otherwords, be a meechigan or tcu... occasionally get there but that's the ceiling. Some are. But after eating the steak, I want more steak not burgers. And I love burgers.

Pace was listed as or with Mafah before he got hurt. Pretty much every transfer was on the 2 deep. Just look. Collins and Williams at receiver. Swint at DE. Bentley at LB. This doesn’t count guys who left last year that would e on the depth chart.

Good grief !

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Actually, winning the ACC is not a big deal right now...

4

Jan 11, 2023, 6:09 PM

The conference has needed better performance from more schools in order to gain the benefit of the doubt from analysts and the playoff committee. There is no denying that the strength of the conference as a narrative is that the ACC is weak and pretty much in the same discussion as the Big 12 and Pac 12; there is only one contender and the rest of the conference is full of fluff and fodder.

That will only change when other programs make significant noise against other contenders or the sec at large...

Our three losses were all to teams not in the ACC that hurts a lot. The ND game was an embarrassment and so was Tennessee and even though the score wasn’t lopsided like the first two I mentioned the South Carolina game was a disgrace. There were so many opportunities to blow that game wide open and Clemson couldn’t do it. All season they weren’t the Clemson of old. They didn’t blow teams out. Wake Forest, Nc State, FSU, Boston College, Syracuse (we should’ve lost if not for the officials deciding to bail us out) all those games you weren’t watching as a fan and enjoying them? You were watching and saying ### are we doing here? Two blocked punts against Georgia tech, if not for them that game was a one score game? C’mon people were all fans. Fan is short for fanatical, right. But let’s use our heads and our eyes aren’t lying. How many times a game, not the season, a game, did we watch our defense seem to just allow players yo roam around wide open for simple pitch and catches? Wake forest looked like the 2019 lsu tiger offense against us? It was embarrassing. Watching the CFP did you really think Clemson could’ve beat michigan? UGA? Osu? Even tcu? I was so grateful alabama ended the season as the highest ranked sec team after Georgia, earning themselves the right to play in the sugar bowl. Alabama would’ve embarrassed this Clemson team. Tennessee, which I never felt was that good did a good job of that with their back up qB and without their top two receivers? Imagine what that team would’ve done to Clemson with all those guys?? Considering what wake forest or Syracuse or fsu or South Carolina did to this defense?? Clemson has taken a huge step back as far as coaching is concerned. That’s on Dabo and hopefully the hiring of Riley is a step in the right direction. The reality is he should’ve replaced the defensive coordinator as well. When Venables announced he was leaving I think we lost five recruits? When streeter was fired there hasn’t been one kid that has decided I’m leaving? We’re not developing players like we did before. Breese, Murphy, weren’t any better in their final year here than they were when they first set foot on campus? DJ? Another example of a guy not making any strides. There’s big issues in the upstate and to say because we won a conference title in a crap conference is a sign things are well is just ignorant. Stating the obvious doesn’t make me less of a fan, settling for mediocre though makes you an enabler.

Do you feel like Tennessee dominated us because of the score??

Jan 13, 2023, 11:13 AM [ in reply to It’s not with the TN game result ]

They had ONE good drive all night, combined with three long passes resulting in touchdowns. We moved the ball all night, and played good defense except fornthe ONE drive and 3 long passes. We dominated every single statistic in the game, except for the score, based on ONE good drive and 3 long passes. We played a good game and in reality dominated except one their one drive and 3 long passes. UT gets to say they're better by virtue of the score, but the score doesn't remotely reflect the way the game actually played out.

and getting beat by a good team who played 6 games with us circled all year was a downward trajectory? Finishing 4th?

2021 was a jump down, but was it a program issue or (mostly) a singular position issue?

In 2022, our offense improved significantly and we finished with more wins and a higher ranking than 2021, in spite of that same singular position issue.

4th, 14th, 13th.. sorry bud, the most simplistic math skills prove that's not "going downhill for 3 years".

It isnt like many of us havent been ringing the alarm! We have been making the same points and also pointing out the coaching fall off for at least 2 years now. Some of us for 3 years!

But the sunshine pumpers keep drinking the "Dabo walks on water" kool-aid and telling us everything is just fine.

Well newsflash, the results say otherwise!

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Here's the problem ...

22

Jan 11, 2023, 3:37 PM

Yes, we have most definitely slipped from the elite status we held for a long time, as one of the 5 best programs in the country. We can no longer seriously compete with those teams. To claim otherwise or rationalize it away is dshonest and insulting. However ...

1. It is, as a matter of fact, extremely difficult to get to that level, much less maintain it. That is not just double talk, it's 100% truth.

2. We are still pretty dang good - a top 15ish team that wins 10-11 games and wins our conference.

Here's the problem: Dabo uses the above truths to deflect from and defend the fact that we have clearly slipped, all without admitting we have slipped and addressing possible causes and solutions.

Why have we slipped? Well that's complicated, and it's a matter of opinion, so here's mine:

1. We are missing a handful of key differnce makers that made us elite to start with, particularly on offense ... no Deshaun Watson, no Trevor Lawrence, no Travis Etienne, no Tee Higgins, No Mike Williams, No Justyn Ross, No Amari Rodgers, etc.. We have some guys who are close, but not quite on that level.

2. We lost some great coordinators over the last few years, and replacements have not worked out, at least they haven't worked out YET; that remains to be seen. I'm neither defending or criticizing those hires here, I'm just pointing out the obvious; at the very least, there has been an adjustment, and so far the results are not impressive, and this has been a major factor.

3. There are other things that may or may not be factors; there are a lot of strong opinions here, and I'm not sure if they are facftors at all, or how much of a factor they really are, but failure to utilize the portal and too much favoritism toward family and friends by keeping players on the team that will never play, vs. making room for more players that can help right away through the portal, and hiring coaches that are friends instead of going out and looking for the best available.

Just my thoughts.

Here’s the problem…our fan base likes to talk in blanket statements without backing anything with facts. If you anyone cares to do any research almost all of our offensive stats have significantly improved from the 2021 season (when we had a different coordinator). In fact our offensive stats are on par or better the Chad Morris’s last year and Tony Elliott’s last year. But hey, why take time to actually look at the facts when you can get on here and say whatever you want and pretend it’s true!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Here's the problem ...

Jan 12, 2023, 6:49 AM

Speaking of Tony Elliott, he took his take on Clemson offense to UVA and tried to apply it to a fairly potent offense and QB that was having a career 2021 UVA year, see what happened in one year!! Brennen Armstrong looked like he had never thrown a football in his life, he said as he was departing "the Elliott philosophy didn't quite match his style of play", hit the Transfer Portal and landed at NCS. He'll fit in down there I guarantee it!! DABO and Company needs to start viewing game film from Georgia, Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan. ect!! and maybe he'll start to get the picture of what Clemson football used to look a lot alike.

Until we can go out and compete with these teams again, he'll never see another CFP Championship or even get the chance to play for one!! Just being realistic and looking back at the last 3 years.

I'm still in shock at DABO's failed DJU experiment!! I'm always hopeful things will change, but I'm not seeing it for next 2023 year. It will be a struggle to compete for the ACC Championship, I saw a 100% improvement in Travis Jordan and the entire FSU Team, Unless FSU totally blows a circuit breaker, DABO better start looking in his rear view.

offense this year, and the comparison to 2014 (Chad Morris's last year), which was the year Cole Stoudt and DW split time at QB. That's why I say the jury is still out on coordinators.

inaccurate. However, and improved offense could possibly get us to the playoff. Prior to this season, the main reason was the QB miss with DJ. Had he been what all expected, the 2021 team would have made it to the final for a rematch with Georgia. The 2022 defense wasn't nearly as good as 2021 so I doubt we make it even with an imporved DJ. But just an average offense could have made the final with that 2021 defense.

People think well its been four years since a natty, but hey we finished #2 in 2019 and #3 in 2020. Missing on DJ really set the program these last two years, but now the defense and wide receivers are an issue.

Isn't that true of every team except UGA this year? Was Bama, OSU, Mich, LSU, Clemson, or any other team elite this year? There was 1 elite team and about 10 good teams this year. Since the Bama-Clemson glory years of 2015-2018, there really haven't been many elite teams. LSU for one year, and UGA this year. Last year UGA won the Natty, but they weren't elite. Only beat us by a pick six and lost to Bama. The difference between good and elite is not very big, and a lot has to come together for that one elite year. We're not that far away and all the hand wringing that we are now a dismal failure is ridiculous.

There will be as many opinions as there are people making them concerning what lies ahead for Clemson. I tend to be closer to the pessimistic than to the optimistic view, while recognizing no one really knows how things will go months from now. I think we would be butchered in the SEC, and the weakness of the ACC provides a huge advantage regarding post season play. However, everyone knows the ACC conference schedule is weak relative to some other programs. How many conferences have only one likely obstacle in conference play? The better test will be Notre Dame and South Carolina, both losses in 2022.

The key is always recruitments, and for those thinking we are en route in seeking to return to elite status, please note that Georgia has 85 players, and 66 of them are 4 or 5 star. I have no idea what our numbers are, but I am guessing they are a good deal lower than that. TCU, incidentally, had seventeen 4 and 5 stars. For 2023, Georgia had one of the strongest recruiting classes, and we should be happy we were not in the BCS this year. How could anyone have reasonably expected anything but carnage. Tennessee, with key starters not playing, did just fine, and Notre Dame destroyed us in South Bend.

The notion of decline is increasingly out among the pundits. The question is how long will top recruits be attracted to Clemson if they think our boat is listing badly? It would be nice to hear Coach Swinney speak in terms of urgency instead of trying to fight modernization by talking about microwaves and crockpots.

We have 51 4 and 5 stars on the team. And that is about par for the course over the past few years. According to 247 sports compostite rankings for each teams talent ranking, over the past few years we have hovered around the 4 or 5 mark, with this year being 5th. Georgia bama and Ohio state have always been ahead of us.

Does this report surprise anyone? We have been dropping off the past three years. How can anyone be upset with this report? Our inbred coaching staff is not good. We are signing more and more players who can be great with development but our coaches don't seem to know how to do that. Gone are the days of coaching up players to play at their highest level - and what happens next? The best players in the nation see it and shy away. Yes, we'll get a few but not as many as we need.

One 5 star out of 26 signees this year. You can't hide it - we are not attracting top tier talent. When Dabo says we are stacked, I have to wonder what he is thinking....

It appears in this present CFB climate Dabo has allowed entitlement seep in the team as evident of not allowing Cade to compete against DJ for QB1. He didn’t go into the portal and entice 5-star RB and #16 HS overall prospect in ‘19 in Trey Sanders RB to come to Clemson and compete against Shipley and Mufah for starting RB position at Clemson. Tigernetters you must face it…Dabo philosophy and actions maybe passé! However, I however I pray that I am wrong because I would love to see Clemson football flag on the top of mountain again!

Jan 12, 2023, 10:45 AM

We should be positioned well to win the conference again in 2023 and win 11 or 12 games. If you look at the average recruiting class rankings for tens in ACC and our rival, Carolina, here’s what you get:
Clemson: 7
UNC: 19
Miami: 19
FSU: 22
Gamecocks: 32
GT: 44
NCSU: 44
PiTT: 46
VT: 46
UVA: 49
BC: 50
Louis: 51
Duke: 54
WF: 60
Cuse: 65
So, as you see, we should beat the vast majority of the teams in our conference fairly easily. You could argue that UNC, Miami, FSU and Gamecocks could play fairly evenly with us, certainly competitively. Certainly an “x” factor is the QB position. Look how WF has played us lately….but they had Hartman. Look how well we faired during the Watson and Lawrence years. With DJ over the past two seasons, Swinney has had to use the “winning is hard to do” speech after we narrowly escaped a loss to much less talented teams. I’m hoping he can shelve that “winning is hard to do” speech for the next few years at least. As always, nothing personal, just business!

Re: TNET: National reporter on Clemson: 'They've been going downhill these last three years'

Jan 12, 2023, 1:36 PM

This guy is correct. One thing he did not address is our incestual coaching staff. I mean look, we have Cole Stoudt as the player development coach, and others but Dabo is apparently sticking with Brandon and Wes and the combination of them alone, without hitting the portal will be the end of us as a power. So what? We win the ACC powderpuff championship? Notre Dame beat both us and UNC and then we play an average SEC team and lose at home, and another which had so many players out in the bowl game, the ACC championship means nothing. The wins we had were against really lousy teams. The only decent team we beat was FSU and you can bet they will take us next year. If Clemson had been in the SEC, we would have probably been lucky to not have more than 5 losses.
