Here’s my question. Is DJ transferring because he is salty?

Dec 5, 2022, 2:57 PM

Or just really wants to be elsewhere. He can’t honestly think he was the best option. And many times looked like he wasn’t having fun. If football isn’t for you why go play somewhere else?

I think he saw the writing on the wall and sees this as an opportunity to get some time elsewhere, and/or be closer to family.

No he's not transferring because he's "salty". He knows he lost his job. Besides he's been hounded to absolute death by this fanbase as well. I'd want out too. He is transferring to go potentially get a starting job elsewhere and maybe be closer to home.

Edit: that was supposed to be a reply to the OP. Idk why it went to your comment for the reply.

Big Dave has allegedly brokered a 1 for 2 deal with UCLA where they are buying both sons just to get Matayo. DJ will stay on the payroll so long as Matayo balls out.

he is transferring if the reports are true. And the reason would matter how? No matter what the reason it just gives some people something to gripe about.

I highly doubt this decision was made after Saturday. Dabo said at the beginning of the season that DJ was graduating in December and had a plan. I know there were a lot of folks on there the last couple of weeks that “knew” he couldn’t play anywhere else and he would come back here next year and Dabo would start him again next year blah blah blah that didn’t want to admit what Dabo said months ago but here we are.

100% this. I said it early in the season and the redneckier fans got all upset with me, but there was no way he was going to come back after this season. He was graduating and his performance at Clemson was not going to get him drafted.

On top of that, I'm pretty sure the staff is glad he is moving on because they didn't want Cade or Christopher to transfer - younger quarterbacks with upside.

He's transferring because he wasn't going to play any more here.

He presumably still aspires to play in the NFL - something that won't happen if he rides the pines in Clemson.

I’m sure he believes, like we all do, in his own abilities and wants to do everything he can to make the league. He won’t do that as a back up. I think he’s handled this with class and I hope he does well wherever he goes.

I agree, he did handle it with class and I also with the best for him.

Not sure he wants to be anywhere at this point but may feel the expections of others that he play football. Since it is clear he would not start at Clemson he making the only choice he believes is available to him.

Re: Here’s my question. Is DJ transferring because he is salty?

Dec 5, 2022, 3:03 PM

What are you talking about? he’s had nothing but positive things to say about the university and the team even after losing the starting job. The fact is DJ had the locker room all season, Dabo couldn’t swap until Cade could seize the locker room. Dabo has to shoulder the blame for not creating more opportunities for Cade, but forcing Cade down the teams throat was going to lose us a lot more than two games.

DJ knows that the locker room is Cades now, if we wants to make a run at playing professionally he either needs to gamble on a position change or a system change. And he definitely needs a change of scenery.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's perfect timing for him. Everything worked out great

for everyone except those of us who feel like we should be in the final four.

Re: Here’s my question. Is DJ transferring because he is salty?

Dec 5, 2022, 3:04 PM

Or maybe, just maybe Dabo had a talk with him and told him it was time for Cade's chance and DJ made the choice to move on without making a scene. Now he's off to ply his trade elsewhere where he'll have a chance to rehab his resume and turn his career around. Unless Dabo or DJ talks we will never know the true answer and I think both have more class than that.

I thought he maybe gone a few games ago. Also the reason I did not understand Cade not being under center.

No way this coaching staff lets Cade walk to keep DJ.

Early in the year in one of Dabo's pressers he made it abundantly clear that DJ was graduating in December. Also known as DJs time at Clemson will end this December. Whatever DJ got into with his NIL stuff handcuffed DJ and Dabo's love for his players and sheer disdain for NIL also handcuffed our program. I have zero proof. But the writing has been on the wall that this was DJs last year at Clemson period.

that would reasonably be interpreted as "salty."

It is reasonable to assume he wants to play and it is reasonable on his part to think he won't get it done here. So he's moving on. I doubt there's much more to that decision, except maybe it's something that he's wanted for a while. Who knows. But it would be a stretch to think he's knee-jerking this decision because he got benched.

Here's my best guess ...

Dec 5, 2022, 3:10 PM

He knows he has lost the job, and most likely the only way he plays again is if Cade gets hurt or in mop up duty. He still wants to play football, maybe even NFL, and knows he will have a better opportunity somewhere else.

Based on what we know about him, he doesn't seem like the salty type that would pout and take his ball and go home, not at all. There is absolutely no reason to think that.

I believe he's transferring because he fulfilled his role here!
His job was to keep Clemson afloat to the best of his ability in this Offense not suited for him with a transition at OC occurring simultaneously. He did his job!

While he struggled in this system & was battered by "media & 'fans'"... Cade was being strengthened & developed "by design and according to the plan" to take his job.
